Trash & Recycling Videos:
Here are a few educational videos from around the Cape - please pass them along to anyone who may be interested.
If you missed last week's composting workshop in Chatham, fear not, we got it all on video. Russ Norton, Horticulturist with the Cape Cod Cooperative Extension, led a talk on the dos and don't of home composting. Whether you're new to composting or a master gardener, this talk has something everybody. Click here or on the image above to watch. Dennis Transfer Station Foreman Chad Contonio and Channel 18 teamed up to educate residents about recycling by pulling a trash bag out of the hopper and digging through it for recyclable items! He found that more than half of the bag's "trash" was actually recyclable. Click here or on the above image to download the video. |

How America Is Losing Up to 40 Percent of Its Food from Farm to Fork to Landfill - Getting food from the farm to our fork eats up 10 percent of the total U.S. energy budget, uses 50 percent of U.S. land, and swallows 80 percent of all freshwater consumed in the United States. Yet, 40 percent of food in the United States today goes uneaten. This not only means that Americans are throwing out the equivalent of $165 billion each year, but also that the uneaten food ends up rotting in landfills as the single largest component of U.S. municipal solid waste where it accounts for almost 25 percent of U.S. methane emissions. Brookline Mulls Ban on Styrofoam, Plastic Bags - A proposal that will go before Special Town Meeting in November seeks to prohibit the use of disposable polystyrene for take-out food packages. Another proposal on the Nov. 13 meeting's warrant would also prohibit stores from providing disposable plastic shopping bags to customers. Business interests say finding a suitable, more sustainable substitute for polystyrene cups for hot beverages has been difficult, and banning plastic bags could cost businesses and consumers more money.
