HARC Participants Check-In

The job of morning check in of our participants is being facilitated by our Aphasia Community Taskforce participants Cheryl Adamson, Mike Buczkowski, Michael LeBourgeois, and Tom Niemcyzk. Our participants have been instrumental in streamlining  our processes and HARC looks forward to more improvements from ACT in the future. Our participants are giving their time to HARC and helping us grow stronger.

UH Graduate Students observe HARC
University of Houston graduate students who are currently enrolled in Dr. Lynn Maher's

Aphasia and Related Communication Disorders class will join HARC programming to learn more about Aphasia. The students will be with HARC through the first week in December. Please help us welcome our wonderful guests.

Gearing up for Camp for All
Camp for All is almost here! Camping will kick off on Friday, October 26th with check in starting at 5:00 PM, dinner at 6:00 PM, and the evening entertainment will start at 7:30 PM with Karaoke and an ice cream party. Saturday is packed with activities that HARC participants requested including fishing, horseback riding, nature walks, and more. Saturday evening entertainment is a fireworks show and making s'mores. Golf carts are available at camp. Don't forget to bring your own snacks! Sunday check out is by 10:00 AM.

HARC celebrates fall with Halloween week we will have themed activities and prizes for the best costumes October 30th-November 1st.

League City Police   
HARC Training for Freeport Police 
Allison Hay, HARC Executive Director, and Rita Justice, HARC Board Chairman, will speak with all four shifts of the Freeport Police department on November 1 and 2, at 5:30 pm. Allison and Rita will travel to Freeport with the purpose of educating police officers in understanding aphasia and in learning ways to communicate with persons that have aphasia. All are welcome to come on the trips.

Sit and Be Fit  
New Program Addition: Sit & Be Fit
Join Paul Kariuki with his fun Sit & Be Fit program that incorporates light exercises, games, and yoga practices to help with muscle-toning and increase circulation on Tuesdays and Thursdays at 10:00 AM.

HARC Presents at ASHA

Houston Aphasia Recovery Center (HARC) will present "Evolution of a Wellness Center for Persons with Aphasia" at the 2012 American Speech and Hearing Association (ASHA) Convention in Atlanta, Georgia on November 15-17, 2012. Stephanie Schmadeke and Melissa Irvin, HARC's resident Speech Language Pathologists, along with HARC Board members Dr. Lynn M. Maher, chair of the Department of Communication Sciences and Disorders at the University of Houston, and Rita Justice, HARC founder and Chairman describe a non-profit community based wellness program for persons with chronic aphasia. 

Presenters will describe a non-profit community based wellness program for persons with chronic aphasia. Representatives from the HARC will share their experiences with an emphasis on stages of program development, strategic planning, sustainability, community partnerships and preliminary utilization of participant outcome data.

HARC Thanksgiving Feast  
HARC will celebrate Thanksgiving with a feast at lunch November 13-15. A sign-up sheet for sides and supplies is located on the HARC board in the main room. HARC will also celebrate with sports team theme week-wear your team shirt or hat to programs! We have much to be thankful for this year, let's celebrate together.

HARC Holiday Week
Celebrate the season with HARC December 12-14, 2012. We encourage everyone to dress festive and we will have a white elephant exchange every day at the end of lunch.

"Let's Talk" Luncheon Honors Founder 

HARC will honor, Blair Justice for his dedication to those affected by aphasia at the "Let's Talk" Luncheon on March 7, 2013 at River Oaks Country ClubHelp us by  honoring us by being at the luncheon; it will be a beautiful tribute to a man who has made HARC his legacy.
