Leadership Tips from Betsy

May 2016

"Do not move into 2016 without letting go of something significant from 2015, an old idea, label, habit, fear, concern of ego. Let go to free up the whitespace for something new to enter." Brendon Burchard

This month's Spotlight on Business highlights Alice Osborne. Alice is one talented woman! She writes, sings, plays guitar and fiddle, dances and is an exceptional writing coach and editor. Please check her website for information on her performances and workshops. Alice also has two children - how she does everything baffles me! A copy of Alice's book of poetry Heroes Without Capes is a great gift for Mom for Mother's Day on May 8. Also, check out Kathleen V. Logan's book Women's Wisdom for another great gift idea.
During April I met with several of the Mentoring Groups from Women in Bio and discussed leadership style. After taking my leadership style assessment the women shared their leadership style and the leadership style of their team members. If you want to better understand your leadership style, contact me. Please consider this your personal invitation to join me on Sunday May 22nd at Southern Village in Chapel Hill for Katy Bagai's fundraising fashion show. I'll not be modeling - but I do get to speak! Networking/Netweaving is an integral part of business. A great way to network is to serve on a community or non-profit board.
What are the benefits of serving on a Board? 1. You'll rub shoulders with leaders and influencers in your industry or community and new work opportunities might follow. 2. When you're engaged in something other than your work, people's perception of you changes. There's a positive shift in your reputation and credibility. 3. Boards are like mini-organizations. It's a place where you can shine and expand your leadership skills. 4. Your communication skills will dramatically improve. 5. You'll get ideas for your own business and career. 6. You'll find mentors and build political capital. 7. You'll enjoy the fulfillment that comes from giving back to the community. I'm happy to help you find the right fit for the right board for you. Give me a call or email.

Alice Osborn is a writer, book marketing specialist, book writing coach and sought after speaker. I attended one of Alice's writing workshops and was impressed with her knowledge, her teaching ability and her personal interest in the success of her students. If you are thinking about writing I highly recommend that you schedule a session with Alice. I know that you will want a copy of her latest book of poetry, "Heroes Without Capes".

"Humans are ambitious and rational and proud. And we don't fall in line with people who don't respect us and who we don't believe have our best interests at heart. We are willing to follow leaders, but only to the extent that we believe they call on our best, not our worst." ~Rachel Maddow
