Proper 28: Twenty Fifth Sunday after Pentecost

Service of the Word and Table at 8:30
Special music from Thomas & Carlos

Service of the Word at 11:00
Two anthems from the sanctuary choir, including the African-American spiritual "Give Me Jesus"

Preaching: Rev. Michael
Pericope: Mark 13:1-8
Lectionary Readings: Click here to read them

Worship Notes:
Two great pieces of poetry help frame an apocalyptic pericope from Mark on Sunday.  The first, by Edward Hays, "Autumn Psalm of Fearlessness.;" the second, "Franz Marc's Blue Horses," by Mary Oliver.

Here's a couple of preparatory exercises for Sunday worship:
  • Collect some leaves (with your hands or a rake) and connect with them as a cairn of a sacred season: "peaceful and calm is autumn's swan song, for she understands that hidden in winter's death-grip is spring's openhanded, full-brimmed breath of life."
  • Cheat and give a read to Mary Oliver's poem for the morning (it's not really cheating): "maybe our world will grow kinder eventually.  Maybe the desire to make something beautiful is the piece of God that is inside each of us."
After warning of "wars and rumors of wars," Jesus says "do not be alarmed."  A few spiritual practices, a couple of poems, and a new perspective will likely be necessary in order to "not be alarmed."

P.S.:  GOOD NEWS!
Congratulations to Central!  This week we learned that we were a "top 100" in our contributions to One Great Hour of Sharing this year!

ALSO: we received word that we have been awarded another $5,000 grant from the Southeast Conference in order to support our future efforts on a "Clairmont sign."  A committee of the Trustees is carefully working with a designer on options for a new way of communicating our presence and our ministries.

P.P.S.: Imam in Conversations class this Sunday
Imam Furqat Mohammed will attend the Conversations class this Sunday at 9:30 to answer questions about Islam, which the class has been studying.  All are welcome to attend.

"Bring Many Foods"
THANKSGIVING POTLUCK LUNCH
Sunday, November 22, 12:15 pm

Bring many foods, beautiful and good,
celebrate, in different meals and menus,
ethnic fare is many, living, thriving here.
Hail and Thanksgiving! Bring many foods!

Central's annual Thanksgiving Potluck Lunch is scheduled for Sunday, November 22 following the 11:00 am worship service. Since the first Thanksgiving meal is imagined as a meeting of two distinct cultures, this year's Thanksgiving potluck is intended to celebrate the many and distinct cultures that have been here and that have arrived in North America since that first sharing of food.

Turkey will be provided. So, we need you to bring the side dishes, trimmings, breads, snacks and desserts to the kitchen prior to 11:00 am worship on Sunday, November 22. And, just for fun consider bringing a dish that is representative of your family's country or continent of origin. In other words, "bring many foods" from Africa, Central and South America, Asia, Europe, Southeast Asia, North America, Middle East and Polynesia.

You will also want to help with the setup and cleanup for this fun event. Please contact Debbie Spearman to volunteer. Bring many hands too!

SPIRIT STILLNESS-THANKSGIVING
Monday, Nov.  23 6:00pm - 7:30pm
Before the celebrations of Thanksgiving, Rev. Michael will facilitate an evening of "sacred stillness."  This restorative yoga practice will use bolsters and blankets to help us relax and breathing and meditation techniques to center us in the Sacred.   No movement required.  Come for an evening of calm before the fun and/or stress of the feast.  If you cannot make it by 6:00, come anyway.  Some props will be provided; bring your own to make sure we have enough.
Suggested donation: $10 - RSVP encouraged:  Michael@central-ucc.org
No one will be turned away for being late or not having $10.

OFFICE CLOSED
Thanksgiving Holiday, Nov. 26-27
Central's Office will be closed Thursday and Friday, November 26-27, in observance of the Thanksgiving Holiday. The office will reopen Monday, November 30th.

SENIOR MINISTER'S ADVENT TEA

FELLOWSHIP OF THE GRAPE
Saturday, December 5, 7:00pm
Paula and Erik Emde will host December Fellowship Of the Grape Saturday, December 5th at 7pm.  Paula and Erik have selected "Festive Wines, Ales, Glugs and Meads" for a Christmas Holiday theme as the selection for the month. Please bring any sweet or savory or hearty appetizer or dessert that will compliment this selection.

For those not familiar with FOG, attending is one of the best ways to meet Central's members and visitors of all ages and stages of life in a casual setting.  The tastings are not formal, just informative.  You don't have to be a church member to attend and all are welcome!

FYI:  Several people have said, "I would love to come to FOG, but I don't drink alcohol."  Several folks attend FOG who do not drink alcohol.  FOG is NOT about the alcohol it is about the FELLOWSHIP.   All are welcome!

Event Details: December 5th, 7:00pm.  RSVP to hosts Paula and Erik at 770-451-5180 or email at paulaemde@yahoo.com.   If you would like to be added to the mailing list for FOG, contact coordinator RobinLee Fitch at robinleefitch@hotmail.com.   We look forward to seeing you at FOG.

Help THCA without ever having to get dressed or leave the house!
At Toco Hills Community Alliance we offer Free Groceries for people in 15 zip codes and and Utility Assistance to folks in 5 zip codes.  Frequently we get requests from people outside these areas or requests for other types of services.  We have a referral guide, but it is out of date. We are looking for a couple of people to make some phone calls, look at some web sites and update our referral guide.  If this is something that sounds interesting to you, please email Mary-Louise Wilson.
Many of us will be relieved and appreciative.
