Tenth Sunday after Pentecost

Service of the Word and Table at 8:30

 Celebration of Communion (every week)

Music by Rev. Maureen, Carlos & Thomas

Service of the Word at 11:00

Dr. Barbara Steinhaus, Soloist

Preaching: Rev. Michael
Pericope: Exodus 16:2-4, 9-15

Lectionary Readings: Click here to read them

Sermon Notes

The pericope for preaching is a "wilderness inside the wilderness" text:  the sojourners in the desert as so "lost," that they are prepared to go back to Egypt.  This is an important faith story in the covenant formation between God and humankind:  it reads like a first-time parent with a crying baby.  Tenderness and sharp realities on both sides of the relationship.

In addition to Communion, a poem from Theodore Roethke and this poem from Rumi (alt) supports our worship:

There is a force within us that gives us life-let us seek that!

In our bodies there lies a priceless jewel-let us seek that!

Oh, as we wander in the wild wilderness, sometimes feeling lost on our sojourn, let us not seek or search for a great treasure outside of ourselves...let us look within and seek That.

BOARD ANNUAL REPORTS DUE: August 1

In preparing for our upcoming Annual Meeting Sunday, Sept. 13 we ask that all boards begin the process of drafting their annual reports. Please send finished reports (font - Times New Roman, font size 12) to our office manager, Vanessa, by August 1. office@central-ucc.org

CENTRAL LAUNCHES NPR
AD: July 1

Between July 1 and August 9, Central will have a "support spot" on WABE!  While there is no "guaranteed specific time slot," the ad will air 80 times (for 15 seconds)!  This has been an effort we have talked about for years and are so very grateful for a $5,000 grant from the Southeast Conference and a $5,000 grant from Central's Endowment to fund the project.

The cost for the 80 slots is only $6,000 (a special rate of $75/each).  If you would like to "sponsor" our "sponsorship," please make contributions to Central and note "radio ad" in the memo of your check.  Your gift will support the campaign we hope to design later this fall.  The following is the UPDATED ad copy:

Support for WABE comes from Central UCC, an open and affirming, justice and peace seeking, progressive Christian church where faith is a journey, and thinking is encouraged. Near Clairmont and 85. More at Central dash U-C-C dot org.

When you hear the ad, please try to send an email to the office (office@central-ucc.org) to note that you heard it and the time of day.  This is part of collecting important "metrics" for measuring the success of our efforts for future planning.  If someone else tells you that they heard "an ad for your church," please try to send that info to the office, too.  To make it fun, we'll have a prize for the person(s) who (accurately) report hearing it the most times (a copy of Earth Prayers or Life Prayers, one of Rev. Michael's favorite books of prayers, poems and meditations).

MISSION AND ACTION:
ONGOING MINISTRIES OF CENTRAL
UCC Justice Alert: Support Diplomacy -
Defend the Deal with Iran

After months spent at the negotiating table, an important deal has been struck between the U.S., our allies, and Iran. This is an historic, comprehensive agreement which would verifiably cut off Iran's pathways to a nuclear weapon. It represents not only an important moment for U.S. foreign policy, but a victory for all those who supported a more peaceful way forward with Iran- including many like you who wrote letters or called in support of a diplomatic solution rather than war with Iran.

As a Just Peace Church that issued a resolution calling for "friendship and solidarity" rather than war with Iran, it is incumbent upon us to lift our voice at this time to support this agreement. Congress could vote on the Iran deal later this month and unless members hear strong, pro-deal, pro-peace message from constituents, they could vote to kill it.We cannot risk another war in the Middle East.

We've come too far to let a comprehensive deal and secure peace slip away. There's too much at stake.

Urge Congress to defend the Iran Deal.

PRISON MINISTRY

Since the 1980's, Central CUCC has participated in a Prison Ministry with several other area churches.  Monthly, Central members drive our church bus to two men's state prisons;  Hardwick prison in Milledgeville, Ga and Oglethorpe prison in South Georgia.  Our passengers are families with loved ones in prison, whose only means to make the long trip for a visit, is through our church ministry.  Keeping families together is very important for the long term as research shows that supporting these family bonds will strengthen the inmate's chances for rehabilitation and lessen rates of recidivism.   This ministry is also emotionally supportive for families as they are in community with other families in similar circumstances.  For more information on the prison trips, contact the church office. office@central-ucc.org

Great Things Are Happening at
Plymouth Harbor!
Things are heating up at Plymouth Harbor this summer with new offerings such as Tai-Chi, and Rev. Michael's yoga class. On June 6 there was a special brunch to honor the program's faithful volunteers and of course, on July 2 there was an Independence Day Celebration!  Along with jovial parties and new activities, Plymouth Harbor continues to host talented musical guests each week, including Sounds of Swing, Mashburn Music, and Myron Harvey on the saxophone. This incredible ministry is hosting more folks now than ever before with an average of over 20 participants per day- for the past year. Volunteerism is the heart of Plymouth Harbor and if you would like to help, they are always looking for donations of small bingo prizes and delicious desserts. Reach the Director, Kay Coppage at kay@central-ucc.org
