SUNDAY NOTES

Along with the text from Isaiah that inspires the famous hymn/anthem "Here I Am, Lord" (sung at the 11:00 service) two other reading frame the Sunday services:

Why stand we here trembling around calling on God for help, and not ourselves, in whom God dwells...stretch out your own hand and save-become another incarnation of mercy.

-inspired by William Blake

Each time we stand up for an ideal, or act to improve the lot of others, or strike out against injustice, we send forth a tiny ripple of hope...those ripples build a current that can sweep down the mightiest walls of oppression and resistance.                     -Robert F. Kennedy, alt.

Tuesdays, June 16, July 21 & Aug18 @ 6:30pm to 8:30

Table Talk @ the Harrisons'

Table Talk will continue to meet all summer!  This "gathering" (not a "group") consists of whoever "shows up;" sometimes we all fit around one table, often we are at two.  We share a meal (there's always plenty of food), but the open and safe discussion is what nourishes us deeply.  Bring your questions and theological musings (and a dish to share, if you are able).  Contact Rev. Michael for more information.

Tuesday, June 23 @ 6:30pm to 8:00

Introduction to Mindfulness

The simplest definition of "mindfulness" is "being present, right in this moment."  The rest is a long-term training of the heart-mind.  Rev. Michael will lead a short introduction to three basic mindfulness practices: centered breathing (pranayama), centering prayer (mantra), and mindful self-observation (journaling).  For more information/RSVP: Rev. Michael; $10 suggested donation (donations help to provide supplies for other activities).

Tuesday, June 30 @ 6:30pm to 8:00

Mindful Eye (Ikebana)

While an "Ikebana master" would likely take issue with the use of the word, this workshop will bring a mindful eye to the collection and arrangement of materials into a floral/environmental display.  We will take a mindfulness walk on campus, gather elements, and make our arrangement. For more information on what to bring/RSVP: Rev. Michael; $10 suggested donation (donations help to provide supplies for other activities).

Tuesday, July 7  @ 6:30pm to 8:00

Mindfully Still (Restorative Yoga)

This meditative evening is a supported practice of stillness (not movement); no yoga experience is necessary.  The sequence will be "on the floor" with blankets and bolsters; participants will be invited to "rest and release."   For more information or to RSVP: Rev. Michael; $10 suggested donation (donations help to provide supplies for other activities).

Tuesday, August 14 @ 6:30pm to 8:00

Soap Making

Join us for a family fun event of soap making, hosted by Bob Watson. This will be a great time to relax, learn something new, and fellowship with others.  For more information or to RSVP: Rev. Michael; $10 suggested donation (donations help to provide supplies for other activities).

HELP NEEDED for:

"ART in the COMMONS"

Karen Ku loves scheduling and hanging art in our common area.  She and Elsie Dresch have worked on this together for many enjoyable years, but Karen is away for 4-5 months every summer, so we need to have some folks to call upon when they're unable to do the job, if there are to be yearlong exhibitions at Central.  If interested in learning more, please contact Karen art@karenku.com or Elsie elsiedresch@mindspring.com.

Commons Featured Artist:  Myrtha Vega

My plein air landscapes are done on site, inspired by my reaction to the character of the scene.  I redesign the scene to create an original painting.  Why paint on plein air if I am deliberately ignoring the existing landscape?  I was trained as a Landscape Architect.  I love to mold the land to create a landscape on the existing site.  The same concept I apply as a painter:  I mold the land with a different tool: my brush.  The exhilaration of being outdoors enjoying the beauty of the God-given land results in a prayer in color on canvas.  myrthav@comcast.net.

TOCO HILLS COMMUNITY ALLIANCE
Due to your generous support, THCA resumes Financial Assistance!!  On Tuesday, May 26 THCA will begin offering help with utility bills for the zip codes 30033, 30324, 30329, 30341 and 30345.  Rental assistance will be offered on a limited basis.  We will no longer provide Marta cards.  We are able to resume these services because of generous donations from your church and from a number of individual donors.  Thank you for working with us to reach out to our brothers and sisters.  We currently offer a maximum gift of $150 annually.  We hope to see an increase in donations so that this amount can be increased as well. If you are interested in volunteering, contact Mary-Louise Wilson at marylouisew1@aol.com.

WANT TO VOLUNTEER THIS SUMMER?Looking for something worthwhile to do with your kids? School is almost out for the summer and THCA needs volunteers.  School age children, with or without their parent, are encouraged to come help us feed people.  We need help stocking the shelves, fixing lunch, helping people choose their groceries and many other tasks.  We are open Monday through Thursday, 1- 4pm.  Volunteers would be welcome any day.  Contact Mary-Louise Wilson at marylouisew1@aol.com to find out more.  Thank you
