SUNDAY NOTES

A curious tale from the lectionary for the day we have a congregational meeting:  the disciples select a replacement for Judas to bring their number back to twelve.  To do so, they pray and flip a coin ("cast lots").  We know three names for the one person who lost the coin toss, but neither the "winner" nor the "loser" are ever mentioned again in the canonical Christian scriptures.  This may sound funny to us now, but these are faithful faith stories of a community trying to find its way forward.  (The sermon will also include a "Marie story"--be so warned or enticed.)

Please take note and attend the congregational meeting that follows the morning services (see announcement below).   A quorum is needed to conduct the business of the day.

CONGREGATIONAL MEETING:

Budget and Leadership

HELP NEEDED for:

"ART in the COMMONS"

Karen Ku loves scheduling and hanging art in our common area.  She and Elsie Dresch have worked on this together for many enjoyable years, but Karen is away for 4-5 months every summer, so we need to have some folks to call upon when they're unable to do the job, if there are to be yearlong exhibitions at Central.  If interested in learning more, please contact Karen art@karenku.com or Elsie elsiedresch@mindspring.com.

Commons Featured Artist:  Myrtha Vega

My plein air landscapes are done on site, inspired by my reaction to the character of the scene.  I redesign the scene to create an original painting.  Why paint on plein air if I am deliberately ignoring the existing landscape?  I was trained as a Landscape Architect.  I love to mold the land to create a landscape on the existing site.  The same concept I apply as a painter:  I mold the land with a different tool: my brush.  The exhilaration of being outdoors enjoying the beauty of the God-given land results in a prayer in color on canvas.  myrthav@comcast.net.

We need long pants (less than 36" waist) for the field workers. Thrift stores have some good deals.

TOCO HILLS COMMUNITY ALLIANCE

The Toco Hills Community Alliance(THCA) needs your support.  Donations from churches that support THCA ( Central being one of the churches) are down significantly this year. Due to lack of funds THCA has had to temporarily discontinue financial assistance and has also cut back on the amount of food THCA buys from the food bank until the situation improves. Central has been a long time supporter of THCA and the board of THCA is again asking for your financial support. As always, food - pasta, cereal, canned goods, peanut butter, etc- is  welcome as well as plastic bags. Please make your checks out to Central UCC and designate for THCA. Thank you very much for your support.

Board members of THCA

TOCO HILLS COMMUNITY ALLIANCE
Looking for something worthwhile to do with your kids? School is almost out for the summer and THCA needs volunteers.  School age children, with or without their parent, are encouraged to come help us feed people.  We need help stocking the shelves, fixing lunch, helping people choose their groceries and many other tasks.  We are open Monday through Thursday, 1- 4pm.  Volunteers would be welcome any day.  Contact Mary-Louise Wilson at marylouisew1@aol.com to find out more.  Thank you
