Fourth Sunday of Advent

Lectionary Readings (click here to read)

Focus Text: Luke 1:26-38

8:30: Service of the Word and Table

11:00: Service of the Word

Rev. Michael, preaching

Worship Notes

Finally (or too quickly, depending on your perspective), we have a story that includes the familiar characters of our expected seasonal story:  the angel Gabriel makes the "announcement" to Mary.

For many of us, the narrative we loved and even participated in via the annual Christmas pageant as children can be troubling as adults.  We join with Mary in wondering "how can this be" and maybe are even dismissive.  A caution sign on the road of our spiritual journey might be helpful here:  beware "fact fundamentalism."

Fact fundamentalism can, of course, be a way of claiming the elements of the story are "true" (meaning historical); but it can also be a means to claiming it is not a "true" story (meaning scientifically valid).   Both might be hazards and may miss the gift that is still there for us.

A tease from the sermon on Sunday:  what if we are called to be followers of the Jesus teachings, not worshipers of Jesus the infant or man?  And, what if the seasonal stories of a mysterious birth are the first set of parables in the gospel?  Might we then be liberated from our fact fundamentalism into a great and mysterious truth that is still trying to be born in us and in the world?

PLYMOUTH HARBOR

WINTER SOLSTICE SERVICE

One event--many celebrations!  Rev. Michael will lead a service of meditation and gentle mindful movement celebrating Winter Solstice (7:00 to 7:30) in Fellowship Hall.  "Part II" continues in the parking lot: making luminarias to place in the woods (begins at 7:30).  "Part III" is s'mores and warm beverages beside a fire in the parking lot (begins at 7:30).  Come and participate in whatever part or parts nourish your spirit as we celebrate the Light in the longest night.  An RSVP is really helpful, but not required: Rev. Michael

A SERVICE OF CAROLS & BLESSINGS: Sunday, Dec 28 (8:30am & 11:00am)

On the first "Sunday after Christmas," on the cusp of a New Year, Central will again have a special service of Carols & Blessings.  Rev. Facebook users, please remember that it is
very helpful when you "like," share" or "comment." (Just like the magi, the trio is best.)  Last week, we had nearly 10,000 visits to our Facebook page.

Kay Coppage reminds us that we are called to be the Lights of Advent for others. In some tender but significant way, how can we embody Hope, Peace, Joy or Love to someone today?
