Second Sunday of Advent

LECTIONARY READINGS: click here to read them
Focus Text:  Isaiah 40:1-11

Rev. Ginnie, preaching

8:30am:   Service of Word and Table
11:00am: Service of the Word and Table

WORSHIP NOTES

The story of King Hezekiah (Isaiah, chap. 36-39) precedes our Isaiah reading for today. King Hezekiah was caught among powerful nations - Egypt, Assyria, Babylon. He chose a path to give him security for the rest of his days. In doing so, he gave away his country's fortunes to Babylon. It wasn't for another 130 years before the people of Judea were taken away to Babylon. Was Hezekiah thinking only of his own security? Do we think only of our own security as we make decisions that affect future generations? How we reach out for peace through reconciliation matters for people living 150 years from now. Look at how our country's actions of 150 years ago are still in need of healing today. On whatever "side" we understand ourselves to be, we are called to bridge the gap, between deep wounds and reconciled spirits, with courage, hope and love.

ONLINE ADVENT DEVOTIONAL

Below are links to the first four articles submitted by Central members and friends for reflection in Advent. You can read a daily reflection through Dec 24 by clicking here or on Central's Facebook page.

Facebook users, please remember that it is
very helpful when you "like," share" or "comment." (Just like the magi, the trio is best.)  In one day alone, our efforts resulted in over 1,600 people seeing one of our posts.

Advent invites us to be in three places at once:  in the stories of the past, in the dark places that need the lights of the season (hope, peace, joy and love), and in the future that yearns to break in. Peter's piece for today holds all three locations tenderly... Continue reading »...»

SPIRITUAL DIRECTION IN ADVENT

The Rev. Dr. Sally Purvis has resumed her practice of spiritual direction at Central.

Trained by Henri Nouwen at Yale Divinity School in 1982, Sally's longtime involvement with spiritual direction has included work with groups, with couples, and most often with individuals. Spiritual direction can happen in one meeting, a few sessions, or on an ongoing basis depending upon the seeker's needs and wants.

If you're interested in including spiritual direction as part of your Advent observance, or at any time, call Rev. Sally or email her at (click here) for an appointment. Fees are based upon ability to pay.

Third Sunday of Advent Special Events

Sunday, December 14

8:30 SERVICE

"Blue Christmas" and Communion

The candle for the morning is the light of Joy, but we know that many struggle during the season, for various reasons, to find that light on their path.  Attenders of this service are invited to bring a candle for the Communion Table (a votive is suggested and the Deacons will provide extra); in the midst of meditations, the candles will be lit before we celebrate a quiet Communion.  You are encouraged to then take your candle home as a centering support through Advent.

11:00 SERVICE: Choral Service

Vivaldi's "Gloria"

This setting of the Gloria from the traditional Roman Catholic mass has been well-loved by choral singers for generations.  It tells the angels' story of "Glory to God in the highest, and on earth, peace to those of good will."  Sallie Anderson, Marlee Givens, Lorelei Cisne, and John Hoover will be soloists in this masterwork, which will be accompanied by a string quartet.

12:00:  ADVENT EVENT AND LUNCHEON

All are invited to share in a delicious Bengali luncheon prepared by Monica Baroi and the youth. The CE Board is hosting a time to make holiday crafts - cookie decorating, angel photos, and more. It's a fun event for all ages. All are welcome. All donations for the luncheon go to Youth Missions.

SAY MERRY CHRISTMAS TO TOCO HILLS COMMUNITY ALLIANCE

In 2015 THCA hope to move to a client choice model.  This means that instead of just being handed food, and taking what they get, clients will choose what they want.  This approach treats people with dignity and cuts down on food waste.  In order to do this efficiently we need 6 sets of shelves.  Each shelving unit costs $112.  You are invited to purchase one in honor of a family member or friend, or merely as a tax deductable contribution. Make your check payable to THCA and put "shelves" in the memo line.   uestions?  Email  at Mary Louise Wilson Come by and see how god uses your generosity!

YOU ARE INVITED TO ATTEND OUR 50-STATE EVENT TO

End Gun Violence

On December 11, 2014 at 4:00pm

GunSense Georgia is partnering with the Newtown Foundation, Washington National Cathedral, States United to Prevent Gun Violence and Faiths United to Prevent Gun Violence to host an event to #EndGunViolence in Georgia. By December 2014, the 2nd anniversary of the Newtown shootings, more than 60,000 Americans nationwide will have died from gunshot wounds. As Americans we are all affected by gun violence. That is why we must keep the focus on the shame and tragedy of gun violence in our nation and why we must ask our leaders to take action.

We are meeting in loving remembrance of victims and in determination to save lives moving forward.
