WORSHIP NOTES

This Sunday, our sermon focuses on Paul's first letter to the Thessalonians. The new church start was struggling with the idea that the Parousia (Second Coming of Christ) had not yet happened, as promised by their faith leaders. Fear, doubt, and apathy were starting to creep into the community and Paul's response to them during this critical time was, "Remember you are children of the light; keep awake!" What do these words of encouragement mean for us today, centuries after the long awaited Second Coming was predicted to happen? How do we interpret the Second Coming in our own lives?

Changes Abound at the Central Forest Clairmont Entrance

Info Session, Sunday, 9:30AM, Fellowship Hall

Come hear about our beautification and creek restoration project on the Clairmont Road edge of the property. Hundreds of native plants will have a new home. We have already begun eradicating invasive plants. We will be planting a riparian buffer in the late fall. And more native grasses and wildflowers will come to us in the Spring. Ron Smith will share about this project this Sunday in the Fellowship Hall. All are welcome. If you have questions or want to help with the project, please contact Ron Smith.

         Alternative Gift Marke

Sunday, November 16, 9:30 to 1:00 PM at Central

This year remember your friends and loved ones with a gift that touches hearts and changes lives. Our church will be hosting an Alternative Gift Market on Sunday, November 16, from 9:30 AM until l:00 PM. There will be an opportunity to view a variety of local and global outreach organizations (Street Grace, SERRV, Handicap International, Equal Exchange, Plymouth Harbor, ForeverFamily and more). You may select and make a donation in honor of a family member or friend. The gift recipient will receive a gift card designating the chosen organization that has received a donation in their honor.  Several of the organizations will offer gifts to help raise funds.  Please come and enjoy the market atmosphere, community fellowship, and delicious goodies to eat. Your participation in the Alternative Gift Market brings warmth to loved ones and provides a pathway of hope and peace for a new tomorrow. For more information, please visit our website.

Rev. Michael will host a three-session Inquirers' Series from 9:45 to 10:30 AM in his conference room (office suite).  The sessions are designed for visitors to get to know him and each other a little better and explore both Central and the United Church of Christ. Attendees, of course, are not required to join following the sessions, but may if they feel ready to do so. The next "joining day" is Nov. 23.  To register or for more information please contact Rev. Michael.

Conversations about Jesus

On Sundays through November,

9:30 AM, Window Room 2, Fellowship Hall

Ordering DVDs.

It's not too late to join us!  "Saving Jesus Redux" is a 12 session DVD-based curriculum that helps explore the phrase, "Our faith is over 2,000 years old, our thinking is not."  No reading required so it's great for busy people.  If you borrowed one of the extra DVDs for home viewing and are finished, please return it to the library so others can borrow it (library is off the Fellowship Hall, first room on left (window side).  We meet on Sunday mornings in the "other" Fellowship Hall window room.

 Questions? Contact Sally Harrell.
ONGOING SUNDAY GATHERING:
Sacred Journeys

Sundays, 9:30 to 10:50 AM

Fellowship Hall, Steinhaus Library

Each week this group explores how spirit guides our personal journeys, and we gain new insights by listening to each other. It is a sacred hour +, from 9:30 to about 10:50. We close the door to create a quiet space but you are welcome to come in.

For the next several weeks, we will be discussing the book, The Faith Club: A Muslim, A Christian, A Jew - Three Women Search for Understanding by Ranya Idliby, Suzanne Oliver and Priscilla Warner.
ONGOING SUNDAY GATHERING:
Practical Theology
Sundays, 9:30 to 10:50 AM, Room 206

The Practical Theology class (Room 206) studies, explores and takes action on current

issues.  The class shares leadership and begins each class with "How was your week?" and a devotional.

November 23

Study:             Chapters 6, 7 and 8, Occupy the Bible: What Jesus Really Said (and Did) About Money and Power,  by SusanThistlethwaite.

Leader:            Mary Ellen

Devotional:    Nancy

November 30

Study:                      Chapters 9 and 10

This means we would conclude this study by the end of November and will need to find a new study.  We will probably need to find a short study for December and begin a new study in January. We still have the list of books we are working from.

Children and Youth
Children's Music, 1st-5th Grades
Sundays, 12:00pm - 12:30pm, Room 209
We will have children's music every Sunday right after church. Any 1st to 5th grade children in 11am worship (except the acolytes) are requested to leave at the beginning of the final hymn. Leona will leave at that time also and take the kids to room 209 just inside the doors of the education wing.

Pre-school Sunday School

11:00 AM TO 12:00 PM (Rm 205)

The preschool children can begin in Childcare during the early morning. They will be taken to Room 205 at 11:00 AM or you may take them to Room 205 any time between 11:00 AM and 12:10 PM. After 12:10 PM, the children will return to Childcare. Parents may pick up their children in Childcare at the end of church.

Through storytelling, games, and arts and crafts, the 3 and 4 year old children learn Bible stories and begin to explore ways to be kind to each other and our world.

3rd to 5th Grades

at the Alternative Gift Market

9:45 AM TO 10:50 PM (Rm 208)

This Sunday, November 16, the 3rd to 5th grades will participate in the Alternative Gift Market in the Commons.

Godly Play will resume on November 23.

The older elementary school children are hearing stories of the New Testament. We are sharing a more in depth story than the younger children hear. We continue to use the Godly Play style so that the children have the stories and symbols of their Christian faith surrounding them each Sunday.

Through story, wondering and sharing, the children build their faith and their community together each Sunday.

Outreach Activities
STAMPS SAVE LIVES

For some years Central folk have been saving cancelled stamps which go to Church Women United, Atlanta unit, for sale to a local stamp dealer and then the proceeds are donated to the Hunger Project of Church World Service.  PLEASE save all your cancelled stamps and cut (or carefully tear) off the envelope with a quarter inch margin around each for this worthy, ONGOING project.  A bin for the stamps is located on the shelf in the Commons clothes closet.  See Joyce Myers- Brown for more information.

 Montclair Elementary School

Montclair Elementary School has asked for our help in collecting size 6-10 children's uniform pants. Please ensure that they are either khaki or navy blue. You can place these items in the donation bin outside the sanctuary marked "Montclair Donations". The staff and students of MES have expressed overwhelming gratitude toward our presence and support.

Central UCC has purchased 20 Kroger gift cards, valued at $25.00 a piece for the families of Montclair Elementary School. These cards will be part of our Thanksgiving baskets, which will include information about Toco Hills Community Food Alliance, where the families will be able to get more food and assistance over the holiday break. If you would like to donate toward these baskets please visit the MES table at this Sunday's Alternative Gift Market or designate your weekly pledge towards brightening this special holiday for a family in need. Questions? Contact: Lacey

SIMPLE SUNDAY REFRESHMENTS WANTED

Every Sunday, we share simple snacks in the Commons after worship. We would love to have people sign up to bring two boxes of store bought cookies and two boxes of crackers or popcorn for a Sunday during the year. Homemade goodies are welcome but we are trying to keep this simple so that we have refreshments every Sunday. There is a sign up sheet on the bulletin board next to the nursery. Thank you.

COLLECTING NOW FOR OUR MEDIA SALE

We are now starting to collect your used books, DVDs, CDs, magazines, and other media for our week long sale in January. This is a great way to support our youth summer missions and out-reach opportunities. We have been able to raise a significant amount of money in years past and we need your support again this year! Please contact Lacey for drop-offs and pick-ups.

 Treasure's Report First Quarter
(July-September) 2014

As of September 30, 2014, the balance sheet showed total bank accounts of $143,250.  Total endowments accounts were $662,331.  Ministry for children and youth has $25,209.  Music fund has $14,295.  The Preschool 2013/2014 fund has $36,012 and is being used for $2,625 each month for the operating budget and $1,371.15 each month for principal and interest payment on the capital debt which as of September 30, 2014 was at $94,289.  The Preschool 2014/2015 fund has $12,000 and is increasing at $4,000 per month.

General income for July-September was $157,905 (approximately the same as the expected $160,406 for the quarter.  Plymouth Harbor income was $31,804 compared to the expected $32,125.  Total expenses were $165,085 compared to the expected $160,319.  Therefore, we have a $7,181 deficit for the first three months.  However, this is largely explained from the fact that two of our quarterly payments for major staff expenses (annuities plus health and disability insurance) were paid during this first quarter (extra payments of about $20,000).  Therefore, we have started the new fiscal year much better than the first three month last year. Please continue your generous support.  If you have any questions, please contact Ronald Joyner

The Artwork of Karen Ku
Currently in the Commons

I've loved to draw all my life.  Following art college in Connecticut, I worked for over 30 years as an illustrator-for botanists, entomologists, and doctors in the places I've lived...at the University of Connecticut, and in London, Boston, Chicago, and Atlanta, designed covers for the Harvard Law School Bulletin, illustrations for American Cancer Society, Baptist Home Mission Board, Heifer Project, worked on art for Alumni magazines at Emory, Agnes Scott College and Georgia Tech, and was grateful for the opportunity to do a piece of atrium art measuring 12 feet  X  24 feet at GA Tech.

My current work is centered around teaching the basics of drawing and watercolor at my studio in Avondale.  Over the years my painting has evolved, and though I often return to my love of detailed drawing, this summer in France I began a series of abstract paintings which I plan to continue here at my studio.....but that'll be for next time! Meanwhile, here is a collection of work that came before the abstraction.....hope you enjoy the show!
