World Communion Sunday

LECTIONARY READINGS (Click to read them)

8:30 AM Service of Word and Table
11:00 AM Service of Word and Table

The text for preaching on World Communion Sunday is the "Ten Commandments," a list of "thou shalt" and "thou shalt not."  How many times have you seen the 1956 epic by Cecil B. de Mille with Charlton Heston and Yul Brynner?  In fact, the film can be helpful--it vividly sets the context for the directives.   The people have spent generations in Egypt in bondage and oppression; finally a liberating exodus brings new hope, a new community can be formed.

However, even though the shackles of slavery have been broken, there is still a mentality of "subject-object."  The people will continue to see themselves and each other as an "object," and treat themselves and each other as such, until they learn and covenant to make it different.  They (and we) start with ten basic steps: love God and remember your freedom, don't kill, don't steal, don't covet...

During the reception of the bread and cup, for World Communion Sunday the Prayer of Our Savior will be offered in different languages: "give us this day our daily bread..."

SUNDAY, OCTOBER 12:

Special service on "marriage as a sacred and safe space for love" in celebration of Pride Weekend in Atlanta.  Details in next week's E-News.

PET BLESSING

(Sunday, October 5, 2:00 PM)

Following the worship services on World Communion Sunday, there will be a pet blessing at 2:00.  In truth, we will be honoring the blessings they bring to us.  All pets are welcome and a time will be set aside to remember those beloved companions who have died.  To keep the sacred circle welcoming and safe for all creatures, regardless of our home practice, all critters need to be leashed or in a carrying container.  Please also making sure your dear ones are current on their vaccinations.  If it is not possible/safe to bring your pet, pictures are welcome.

An RSVP is not required, but is helpful: Rev. Michael.

ONGOING SUNDAY GATHERING:
Sacred Journeys

Sundays, 9:30 to 10:50 AM

Fellowship Hall, Steinhaus Library

Each week this group explores how spirit guides our personal journeys, and we gain new insights by listening to each other. It is a sacred hour +, from 9:30 to about 10:50. We close the door to create a quiet space but you are welcome to come in.

For the next several weeks, we will be discussing the book, The Faith Club: A Muslim, A Christian, A Jew - Three Women Search for Understanding by Ranya Idliby, Suzanne Oliver and Priscilla Warner.
ONGOING SUNDAY GATHERING:
Practical Theology
Sundays, 9:30 to 10:50 AM, Room 206

The Practical Theology class (Room 206) studies, explores and takes action on current issues.  The class shares leadership and begins each class with "How was your week?" and a devotional.

October 5th:

Occupy the Bible: What Jesus Really Said (and Did) About Money and Power,

by SusanThistlethwaite.  On Sunday, during our discussion, Joyce mentioned a fairly recent DVD release from Robert Reich.  "INEQUALITY FOR ALL."  Jean Haller has a copy of the DVD which is about 90 minutes long.  The class decided that we would like to insert the viewing of this film into our book study.  So, we will watch and discuss the film during the next 2 classes - October 5th and 12th.  This means that we will need to begin class on time (9:30 AM) and be ready to begin the film by 9:50 AM.

Leader:            Warren Culpepper

Devotional:     Elizabeth Barr

Preparation:   Read Chapter 3, "Den of Thieves," in Occupy the Bible for possible discussion on Sunday.

This book can be purchased from Amazon or Barnes and Noble - paperback only.  Both Amazon and B & N have used copies available for  ½ to 1/3 the price of a new copy.

WANTED:

Retired men to attend monthly breakfast.

The Retired Men's Breakfast group meets in the fellowship hall every 3rd Wednesday morning.  We offer a big country breakfast buffet, good fellowship, and a half hour entertaining or educational program.  Breakfast is served at 9:00 and the program starts at 9:30.  Our regulars are aging, and we have lost a significant number of them over the past few years while only a few younger, newly retired men have come on to take their place.  Consequently, the number of men attending and the number of helpers has dwindled to the point that the future of the activity is in jeopardy.   The next breakfast is on October 15.  Come and join us.  You will enjoy it, and you will be helping keep this 37 year traditional activity viable.

EARTH TOPICS

Monday, October 6, 6:30-8:00 PM

The NY Times science section (9/23/14) was about "Nature in the Balance" during our time of climate change. Over 300,000 people showed up in New York City to show the UN their concerns about our climate. The poetic language of Aldo Leopold in the book, The Sand County Almanac, reminds us of how humans have impacted the world in the 20th century. History shows our impact through the eons. How do these realities impact our faith? In October, we will have readings (pp. 34-52) from A Sand County Almanac. Also, we will talk about chapter one of From Teilhard to Omega: Co-creating an Unfinished Universe, edited by Ilia Delio. All are welcome!

Questions? Contact Rev. Ginnie.

THCA gets a "Cool" grant from the Atlanta Community Food Bank

Toco Hill's Community Alliance has received a substantial grant from the Atlanta Community Food Bank.   These funds will be used to install a large walk in refrigerator and walk in freezer, similar in size to what a restaurant might use.  This will enable THCA to increase the amount of food distributed and the number of people served.  The focus will be on fresh food, such as fruits, vegetables and dairy. The additional freezer space gives the option of distributing large pieces of meat, such as turkeys at Thanksgiving, and freezing any excess food we might have for later use.  THCA continues to explore sources for fresh free food.  We offer free groceries to all who ask, so if you need food or know someone who does, come 1790 Lavista Rd, Monday-Thursday 1-4pm.  For more information, to volunteer or donate, contact  Mary Louise Wilson.
