8:30 AM Service of Word and Table
11:00 AM Service of Word

FOCUS TEXT:  Jonah 3:10-4:11
Rev. Michael, preaching

WORSHIP NOTES

At the 11:00 service, we will be "blessing and sending" the mission team to Back Bay Mission (BMM).  If you would like to make a donation to the BBM Food Pantry (their shelves are "skimpy" right now), please write a check to Central and note "BBM Food pantry" in the memo.  (Please do NOT bring food items as previously requested.)

You may remember a part of the book of Jonah:  a fleeing prophet swallowed by a big fish.  But do you know the "rest of the story?"

Jonah goes to Nineveh, does a mediocre job in the pulpit, the whole city repents (regardless of the poor preaching), and God spares them from wrath.  Nice result-except that "this was very displeasing to Jonah, and he became angry."  He sulks outside the city in the sun; God causes a bush to grow to give him shade and then takes the bush away in the morning and "prepares a sultry east wind and the sun beat down on the head of Jonah so that he was faint..." The book of Jonah and the pericope for preaching on Sunday abruptly ends here.

The text teases hard questions about our "thoughts concerning God"; the humor, tenderness and even absurdity probably help us to be honest about our private and public theology.  Everything has its own season, even our beliefs about the Divine.

For the next several weeks, we will be discussing the book, The Faith Club: A Muslim, A Christian, A Jew - Three Women Search for Understanding by Ranya Idliby, Suzanne Oliver and Priscilla Warner.
ONGOING SUNDAY GATHERING:
Practical Theology
Sundays, 9:30 to 10:50 AM, Room 206

The Practical Theology class (Room 206) studies, explores and takes action on current issues.  The class shares leadership and begins each class with "How was your week?" and a devotional.

September 21st

Study:             Occupy the Bible: What Jesus Really Said (and Did) About Money and Power,  by Susan Thistlethwaite.

Leader:            Bill O'Steen

Devotional:     Nancy

Preparation:   Review Chapter 1 and be prepared to voice any discussion we missed last Sunday.  Pay particular attention to Pages 19 - 23, the 4 lessons in how to "Occupy the Bible." Warren suggested that 2 additional lessons be added:

Educate ourselves - Google "causes of the great recession," and Ask "How can we fix this?"

Read Chapter 2, "Temptation: It's All About Power," in Occupy the Bible for discussion on Sunday.

This book can be purchased from Amazon or Barnes and Noble - paperback only.  Both Amazon and B & N have used copies available for  ½ to 1/3 the price of a new copy.

Toco Hills has just received word that we have been awarded a Capacity Building Grant from the Atlanta Community Food Bank. We applied hoping to get a walk in freezer and a walk in cooler. We have to increase our purchasing from the food bank by 10 per cent annually for the next three years. Our grant is for $23,700. Wonderful news!

Meals at Hagar's House

Montclair Elementary School

Statistics show that almost 30 million people in the U.S. read below a fifth-grade level, which means that nearly 14 percent of the adult population doesn't read well enough to fill out a job application.  Our denomination is seeking to address this problem through their Reading Changes Lives Literacy Campaign which launched on Sept 8 and continues through the spring. Central UCC is doing their part by helping to secure reading level appropriate books for Montclair. Curious about more details? Contact Lacey

Next Gardening Workday and Other Happenings

Saturday, Sept. 20, 9:00 - 11:00 AM

Several of you cannot always make the regular monthly workday (normally the third Saturday), and asked what you could work on during the week. There is always a need to pull weeds. In fact, weeding could be less of a focus for our regular workdays if some of it was done weekly.

John Cox plans to begin our pond restoration on Thursday, Sept 11. He'll begin by draining it, and then cleaning it with a pressure washer. Questions? Contact Ron Smith
