8:30 AM Service of Word and Table

11:00 AM Service of Word
FOCUS TEXT:
Matthew 14:13-21
Preaching, Rev. Dave Spence

WORSHIP NOTES:

My intention for the worship service is to create a space for those participating to reflect on these themes:

  1. We exist to be miracle workers for one another.
  2. It is in community that we are called to grow.
  3. It's in community that we come to see God in the other.
  4. It's in community that we see our own emptiness filled up by the other.
  5. It's community that calls me beyond the narrow horizons of my own life, my own country, my own race, and gives me the gifts I do not of myself have within me.
  6. We create that community when we come to the Table of Communion.
OUR PREACHER FOR THE DAY

Three years ago Rev Dave Spence came to Central from The Meadowbrook United Church in Kingston Jamaica. Dave had recently embarked on a new phase of his spiritual journey.

"I stumbled into Central at a time when I was searching for a place where I could catch my breath and rest. The welcome I received here not only encouraged me to rest but to find a community of people where I was allowed to be myself and receive care. I found balm here."

Dave is an Ordained Minister of the United Church in Jamaica and The Cayman Islands, currently serves as a Chaplain at The Northside Hospital while pursuing a Doctor of Theology Degree at La Salle University Philadelphia. His research interest is around 'A Caribbean Spirituality of Liberation".

WILDWOOD RETURNS

TO CELEBRATE HOMECOMING Saturday, September 6!

Mark your calendars NOW for the next installment of Wildwood, that semi-regular music event featuring Central members, family and friends. Wildwood will stage its next show on Saturday night, September 6th at 7 PM. Part folk, part Gospel, part Americana and country- even part poetry slam- you'll be amazed at the musical talents within the community here at Central.  No charge to attend; we'll take a freewill offering to benefit a local charity during the show.

There's still time to join the roster of singers and musicians. Or to volunteer to help manage the stage or provide goodies for the dessert-fest that follows the show. Contact Bob Watson at bob@21stcenturyleaders.org. Look for updates each week in the E-News and Sunday Bulletin. And like us on Facebook: Wildwood Concerts at Central UCC!

GODLY PLAY VOLUNTEERS

The Godly Play teachers need some more folks on the Team. Godly Play is our Sunday school curriculum for K-2nd and 3rd-5th grade classes. Godly Play encourages children to make meaning for themselves by inviting them into Bible stories, Liturgical and Sacred Stories. It provides children with the opportunity for them to connect the stories with their personal experience. The stories are told (not read) with story objects to dramatize for visual learners. Each classroom has a storyteller and a doorperson. If you would like to help with these classes on an occasional basis or more, please contact Rev. Ginnie. We will have a training soon.

Children's Sunday School begins August 17

Sunday school begins on August 17, 2014 for children and youth. After conversations, we will decide on children's singing. We are hoping to provide singing for the children immediately following church.

9:30 am to 10:50 am: 3rd - 5th grades Sunday School The older children will have in-depth stories about the New Testament for the whole year. We will still use the Godly Play approach to story telling.

11:00 am to 12 Noon: Preschool and K to 2nd grades Sunday school.

An Open Letter from the UCC

Concerning Child Refugees

Dear Brothers and Sisters in Christ,

The Council of Conference Ministers of the United Church of Christ and the Collegium of Officers offer this open letter to the church in response to the flood of child refugees coming to the United States from Central America. We write it in solidarity with our sister churches in the Southern California/Nevada Conference, the Southwest Conference, and the South Central Conference whose boundaries are coterminous with our neighbors to the South.

We have all been watching over the last weeks child refugees by the tens of thousands risk life and limb to flee violence and poverty in their homeland, hoping to find safety in America.
