Sixth Sunday after Pentecost

LECTIONARY READINGS (Click to read them)

8:30 AM Service of Word and Table

11:00 AM Service of Word
FOCUS TEXT:
Genesis 28:10-19a
Preaching, Rev. Truman Moore

WORSHIP NOTES:
The service will focus on the Jacob story, his dream, his holy place, and will compare him to us, others we know -- and what's the use of those holy places?

OUR PREACHER FOR THE DAY:
Truman Moore is a long time member of Central Congregational UCC.  He and his wife Joan joined Central in 1969.  He had been reared a Baptist, had graduated from Mercer University and Southeastern Baptist Theological Seminary (when it was a well respected school not governed by the extremes of the Southern Baptist Convention -- can you tell he wrote this himself?)  After serving as pastor of two churches, Truman moved into Social Work, beginning as a Social Work Aide working with delinquent boys, then moved to Athens where Joan put him through graduate school at UGA before her own career in GA DOE.  After graduate work, Truman served in a variety of positions in DHR, Family and Children Services.  He retired in 1996 as Field Coordinator.  He has worked in a number of volunteer positions with Central, right now assisting with retired Men's Breakfast, Women and Children's Community Kitchen, the Parish Fund and Trustees.  He and Joan reared two children at Central: Clint, husband of Mary and father of two college boys, works for the USGS at UGA where he works with graduate students in wildlife biology; Laura, wife of Brent and mother of three middle and HS boys in Norcross, is Dir. of Continuing Ed at Emory's Rollins School of Public Health.

 SABBATICAL PREACHERS
Through the summer while Rev. Michael is on sabbatical, Central UCC members, lay and ordained, will be preaching.
  • July 27: Rev. Joyce Myers-Brown
  • August 3: Rev. Dave Spence
  • August 10: Rev. Ruben Swint

GODLY PLAY VOLUNTEERS

The Godly Play teachers need some more folks on the Team. Godly Play is our Sunday school curriculum for K-2nd and 3rd-5th grade classes. Godly Play encourages the children to make meaning for themselves by inviting them into Bible stories, Liturgical and Sacred Stories. It provides children with the opportunity for them to connect the stories with their personal experience. The stories are told (not read) with story objects to dramatize for visual learners. Each classroom has a storyteller and a doorperson. If you would like to help with these classes on an occasional basis or more, please contact Rev. Ginnie. We will have a training soon.
