Fifth Sunday after Pentecost

LECTIONARY READINGS (Click to read them)

8:30 AM Service of Word and Table

11:00 AM Service of Word
FOCUS TEXT:
Isaiah 55:1-13
Preaching, Lacey Brown, Pastoral Fellow, M. Div.

WORSHIP NOTES:
The prophet Isaiah paints us a beautiful, visual of God's gracious invitation to rejoice in the works of God. The author ignites our minds with images urging us to hope and long for something better than our current circumstances. The Jewish people in exile had known only destruction, oppression, and heart ache but now they were given the option to go back to Jerusalem, rebuild the temple, and reclaim their identity. In the midst of struggle, conflict and even despair how do we maintain hope? How do we as a congregation move beyond optimism to becoming a people grounded in hope?

At 11:00am worship, James Roger Baroi Adhikari (son of Gitanjali Baroi & Noel Adhikari) will be baptized.

 SABBATICAL PREACHERS
Through the summer while Rev. Michael is on sabbatical, Central UCC members, lay and ordained, will be preaching.
  • July 20: Rev. Truman Moore
  • July 27: Rev. Joyce Myers-Brown
  • August 3: Rev. Dave Spence
  • August 10: Ruben Swint
Rev. Michael will return to the pulpit at Central on Homecoming Sunday, September 7.
OUTREACH ACTIVITIES

SERVING MEALS AT

HAGAR HOUSE

Hagar House is a shelter for women and their children located in Decatur. Central and a number of other churches in the area have a long-standing relationship with Hagar's House.  If you would like to help prepare and/or serve a meal this August, please email Bill O'Steen

TOCO HILLS COMMUNITY ALLIANCE

Can you Help Move Food?  At THCA we are feeding more people than ever before.  Do you have a large vehicle that you could take to the Atlanta Community Food Bank once or twice a month and pick up food, and deliver it to Toco Hill's Community Alliance? This takes about 2 ½ hours.  We only need two or three drivers and this announcement is going to 6 churches. Contact Mary-Louise Wilson at marylouisew1@aol.com with any questions you may have. Come on, don't you feel God nudging you?

TOCO HILLS FOOD PANTRY PLEASE STOCK THE SHELVES

The shelves at Toco Hills Community Alliance need to be replenished.  As the weather gets warmer, remember the pantry becomes thin.  Mainly two reasons:  Families who have children at home during the summer require extra food.  And most food drives happen in the fall so by spring and summer those food reserves are getting depleted. The pantry always needs CANNED MEATS such as tuna, chicken, spaghetti with meatballs, spam, etc. And also they can use other kinds of food such as Cereal, Pasta, and Canned Veggies & Fruits.  Thank you for all your doing to help feed our neighbors around Central.  Questions?  Ask Jean Haller or Bob Fredrick.

MONTCLAIR ELEMENTARY SCHOOL OUTREACH

Between Central UCC and Buford Highway there is an elementary school of about 1,200 students and almost 90% of them are receiving free or reduced lunch everyday. A few of Central's members are looking into how we can better serve these struggling families during the week and weekends when there is not access to affordable, healthy food. As a team, we are looking to implement a monthly mobile food pantry that would serve 200 families a week's worth of groceries. This would be a partnership between Toco Hills Community Food Alliance and the Atlanta Community Food Bank. We are hoping to have the first one in September after school has started.

Currently, a few members of Central UCC are volunteering their time on a weekly basis to read with students who need a little extra help. Tutors and kids meet at the school, in the library or in the hallway to read for half an hour. This has been a great program so far and they teachers and guidance counselors have been excited about our commitment to the underachieving students.

If you would like to be involved helping with the mobile food pantry or in our ongoing tutoring program at the Montclair, please contact Jean Haller or Lacey Brown.

Join Us for Our Mission Trip
We are heading to Biloxi, Mississippi on September 21st through September 27th to work for the week at the United Church of Christ Back Bay Mission.
There is still time to sign up and join the group for an unforgettable, life-changing experience. It is a chance to help a family rebuild their home and life with either building or repairing a house.  Some people will work in the Micah Center with the homeless clients, with the food pantry, the showers, the laundry or visiting with the clients. Bill O'Steen will gladly take your name and e-mail address to send you the necessary forms. The group decided that our commitment date will be August 3rd. By the 3rd each member should write a check for $125.00 made out to Central with Back Bay Mission Trip on the memo line and give it,or a request for a scholarship, to Lacey Brown.  You also need to turn in the waiver the Mission requires, which Bill can e-mail to you.

PATHWAYS: Transformative Theological Education for a Changing World

The church of the future will not be the same as the church of the past, offering us fresh opportunities to re-imagine not only how we "do church" but also how we prepare leaders-both lay and authorized-for ministries that transform and empower our local congregations, communities, and the world.  PATHWAYS is one such approach to theological education and ministry formation, bringing theology into the midst of the people, for the purposes of individual, congregational, and global transformation.

In response to the challenges and opportunities of the changing religious landscape and the state of theological education in North America, the mission of PATHWAYS is to bring together the best of traditional theological education and the contemporary experiences of the church towards formation of new ministry models by offering affordable, accessible and excellent theological education to lay and authorized leaders.

PATHWAYS is designed to combine the best of the academy and of the church, to shape ministerial leaders not only by introducing them to theory, but to provide them formation in the supervised practice of ministry, and to guide them in theological reflection upon their practices. The facilitators are drawn from seminary and university faculty and ordained clergy

who have excelled in local church ministry or particular specialized ministries. The program also comes with opportunities to broaden the life experience of the participants by engaging Christians and people of other faiths through our Global Theological Education program.

While PATHWAYS originates in the Southeast Conference, we partner with other UCC Conferences and Associations to launch PATHWAYS cohorts in other regions.

To learn more about PATHWAYS (http://tasc21.net), through the website, please contact Rev. Sarah Kim, Th.D., Executive Director of Theological Education and Dean of PATHWAYS, Southeast Conference, United Church of Christ, Atlanta.
