WORSHIP NOTES

You will not find any sermons that work with Matthew 10:24-39 to support family values, a Christian commitment to peace, or any of the kind and gentle attributes Christians often associate with Jesus. Indeed, this is a passage often shunned for preaching. But confronting these "hard sayings" of Jesus without sentimentality offers a compelling understanding of what it means to be a Christian, of "the cost of discipleship." It is a radical understanding, and needs to be, a powerful alternative to "Christianity Lite," if you will.

Dr. Jon P. Gunnemann is Professor Emeritus of Social Ethics of the Candler School of Theology. Professor Gunnemann focuses on theology, ethics, and the economy; and on contemporary theories of justice. He has written extensively on issues of economic ethics, and on Christian ethics and social theory.
