LECTIONARY READINGS

Isaiah 60:1-6 - Psalm 72:1-7, 10-14

Ephesians 3:1-12 -  Matthew 2:1-12

WORSHIP NOTES

Rev. Michael, preaching

Communion at 8:30 & 11:00

Music by Rev. Maureen & Tommy at 8:30

We have a curious relationship with the text for Sunday, Matthew 2:1-12, the only account of the magi in the Gospels.  We rush to it and add "kings to our creche" prematurely.  We assume they were kings or numbered three, neither of which is actually indicated by the pericope (one early tradition had them as twelve travelers).  Sometimes we seek to diminish the awe and wonder of the story by dismissing it all together or by searching ancient star charts for a super nova to make the text "scientifically valid."

All of this, however, risks missing potentially profound meaning in the wisdom literature.  The story is, perhaps,  about a quest of, in and for faith. In my experience, wise ones still make these journeys.

A focus in worship will be a poem from Howard Thurman;  it inspired the following Centering Prayer for Sunday:

O Spirit found in a lowly crèche, now that the song of the angels has stilled and the shepherds are back with their flocks, guide us as wise ones in the world who are awakened by your nativity.  Let the true work of Christmas begin in us:  to find the lost, to heal the broken, to feed the hungry, to release the prisoner, to rebuild the nations, and bring justice and peace among people.  Amen.

Special Sunday Education Classes for Adults

LUKE BIBLE STUDY (Window Room 2)

January 27 to April 28, 9:30 to 10:30 AM

Dr. Ron Joyner will teach a Bible study class for 11 weeks, starting January 6, 2013.  This class will focus on the Gospel of Luke and will meet on Sunday mornings from 9:30 till 10:30 AM in the Fellowship Hall, Window Room 2.  Luke's gospel presents the life of Jesus as the opening of an historical process toward a universal faith, progressing toward Paul's missionary efforts towards Jews and gentiles (in the sequel known as Acts).  Luke's message includes a more clear focus on women and the poor than other gospels. Luke's parables are particularly focused on reversing normal social order.  There are special characters introduced only in Luke ( the angel Gabriel, Elizabeth and Zechariah, Simeon, Anna, Zacchaeus, etc).  Want to know more?  Perhaps you should read The Book.  We'll find drama, history, geography, theology, and, as always, lots of humor. If you would like more information, please contact Ron Joyner, trustees@central-ucc.org.

COMPASSION MEDITATION

Tuesdays January 8, 15, 22, 29, 6:30 to 7:30 PM

(Fellowship Hall, Window Room 2)

At the core of many  wisdom and faith traditions there is a common ground: uncovering love and compassion. There are many practices for developing our capacity to give loving, compassionate attention and to act on behalf of others well being. According to the Buddhist Tradition, mindfulness/awareness and contemplation practices are skillful tools for cultivating loving kindness and compassion, both towards  oneself and others. In this course, we will explore contemplative practices that  bring loving kindness and compassion into our everyday life. Aaron M. Pincus received his M.Div. from Naropa University, the first Buddhist Inspired in the United State. He is trained as a Meditation Instructor and Interfaith Chaplain. Donations are gladly accepted.  All are welcome. If you can't make every week, join us when you can. Please sign up with Rev. Ginnie.

AN OPPORTUNITY FOR PROPHETIC WITNESS

Monday, January 7

The Rev. Joe Hoffman, pastor at First Congregational UCC in Asheville, and former Associate Minister at Central, invites you to an important event that will be in downtown Decatur on Monday (7 January).

The Campaign for Southern Equality, a movement in the south to bring attention to the inequalities of our laws for LGBT folk, recently began a 7 state southern tour that will run through Jan. 17 - at which time we will march from Alexandria, VA into Washington, DC. In each location, they have local LGBT couples request marriage licenses - knowing they will be denied. But the process is powerful. Five lesbian couples made this courageous action in Hattiesburg, MS.  In Hattiesburg, the couples told us after the event was over, "we left church not because we don't love God, but because of the prejudice of the church. We had no idea there were churches out there that have your spirit and love. Thank you for coming to us and supporting us."

The action in Decatur is from 12:30-2pm (7 January).  You can also find more information at www.southernequality.org .  Revs Michael and Ginnie intend to stand in faithful support and prophetic witness with the couples in Decatur.

Joint event with Central and CBH

Author Jay Michaelson (God vs. Gay? The Religious Case for Equality) will lead an event with Central and CBH on Tuesday, January 22.  He will share seven proven ways to have better conversations about religion and sexuality.  By identifying where change can (and cannot) happen, we can make measurable progress -- even with people who seem dead set in their ways.  You can find videos from him on YouTube.

More information about the event will be available in early January.  We hope to invite folk from numerous faith communities to share the event with us!
