From cold/rain and now cooking at over 100'.....There just does not seem to be a medium. The pets at Pet Pals want inside under their air conditioner and then see the sun and want to go outside to play. They are driving everyone crazy!!

We are reading and getting reports of dogs passing away in this heat.  As we have said before, treat your pet like you would a two year old child. Don't leave them in a hot vehicle or outside alone.

Awe... yea, and Summer is not here yet so being Spring, it is still a time of renewal; grass growing, flowers blooming and babies being born. For us, we have renewed the microwave (belly up heating cat food), renewed fans (Rosie's runs 24/7), renewed computers (one is always belly up) and now have renewed a water heater. If anything else feels the need to be renewed, we hope it is something cheap and easy to fix!!!

Once again, THANK YOU so much for your support!

PS. In the previous newsletter we featured Spot.

Several people responded to tell us what it was, thank you!

I just googled it..............the moth does not eat....
The cecropia caterpillar eats the leaves of many trees and shrubs, including ash, birch, box elder, alder, elm, maple, poplar, wild cherry, plum, willow, apple, and lilac. The cecropia moth does not eat. It's only purpose it to mate. OMG, then it dies. Pet Pals wanted to save it. :-(

Looks to me like an Eastern  Cecropia Moth the largest in the U.S. . But it is probably Red Wood Seqothian moth in the far west.

Microchips work?????

Last week a  message was left on Pet Pals' answering machine. (We don't sit in the office.) A veterinary office in Arizona scanned a cat brought in by one of their clients.

Low and behold it was from one of our wonderful adopters. The cat had slipped her door. When the adopter went to pick up her cat, she was told the cat had been given back to the client. The client now refuses to return it. The police was contacted and say there is nothing they can do.

Anyone with suggestions???????

Things That Can Kill Dogs

HEAT.....

10 items:

Most of us know that sugar free gum or anything else containing XYLITOL is dangerous.
Xylitol is extremely toxic to dogs. Even small amounts of xylitol can cause hypoglycemia (low blood sugar), seizures, liver failure or even death in dogs.

CHECK labels on ALL food..... Xylitol is now being put in peanut butter. Those of us using peanut butter to hide pills in to get our dogs to take them, BEWARE.   http://www.vcahospitals.com/main/pet-health-information/article/animal-health/xylitol-toxicity-in-dogs/4340

 Crate Cleaning
Doesn't everyone just hate that job? A neat way to make it easier to clean crates is to use Scrubbing Bubbles Bathroom Cleaner. Spray the foam on, let it set for a few minutes and wipe off. For hardened food and goo a putty knife also helps.

Dogs With Joint Problems
Most people know how dangerous Rimadyl (***see below) can be. Pet Pals and several adopters have had wonderful results with Duralactin. It is for long term management of chronic inflammatory conditions in dogs. It is all natural and will not cause problems if you give too much.  Per an e-mail:
Get Microlactin instead....the human version of Duralactin. It's much cheaper! And it's exactly the same thing.

One of our adopters reports that her dog has not had to have hip surgery because of the wonderful results of Duralactin. It can be purchased on e-bay.

A gal in Washington, who operates a pig rescue, reports that Duralactin is helping her old pig!!

***The market for dog arthritis pain medications tops $130 million a year and is growing about 13% a year, consulting firm Wood Mackenzie says.
But 3,200 dogs have died or been put down after taking the drugs, Food and Drug Administration records show. Almost 19,000 dogs have had bad reactions to them.

Firm UP!
Diggin Firm up is a pumpkin super supplement for digestive tract support in dogs and cats. It works WONDERFUL. It is Pumpkin and Apple Fiber that is mixed with wet pet food. Our kitties and Rosie (two-legged dog, spoiled with wet food) LOVE it.  Pet Pals purchases it on AmazonSmile and get a donation to boot!

Dogs that Dig out!
After receiving another call to take a dog because it digs out, we had a suggestion. Put stock panels on the ground and wire them to the sides... problem solved! The family is keeping their dog....HURRAH!

Dogs that Jump Fences!
After receiving another call to take a dog because they can't keep it from jumping the fence, we had a suggestion. Run an electric fence along the top of the existing fence to teach the dog that fences BITE....problem solved! The family is keeping their dog.....HURRAH!

Need Antibiotics?
You can purchase antibiotics on-line from a number of places. It is sold as FishMox!

Melatonin can be purchased at Wal-mart or a number of other stores. It works GREAT to help dogs sleep or calm them down during storms.

Ear Issues
Just wanted to share this new product (to me anyway) with everyone that my vet used in the ears of my foster dog with very deep seated infections.  They were driving him nuts.  And because the ears were so bad, the only way we could even scope him was to knock him out completely.  My vet  found both ears very infected and after a very thorough cleaning of both canals, he used an antibiotic gel called Poloxamer, that fills the canal space and does not liquefy and run out. It sits there and is very slowly absorbed.  If you have a dog with ear issues, you might ask your vet to use this?
My vet knew I would not be able to doctor the ears due to his severe sensitivity.  I just got the dog home tonight so we'll see, but my vet feels that this AB gel will work very well for him and reduce his stress at the same time.  He will be also on oral antibiotics as well and should not have a need to doctor the ears. Yay!!!
From a friend using this resource.

7 Home Remedies for Your Dog

When you're feeling under the weather, you might find that the perfect thing for treating what ails you is something you already have in the kitchen. Did you know that you can treat your ailing dog with some simple home remedies too? Below you will find seven great natural remedies for making your dog happy and healthy again.

TIP #1
Vitamin E is good for preventing those pesky age lines on your face, and it's also great for your dog's dry skin. (read more on the web site)

TIP #2
Flavorless electrolyte-replacing liquids, such as sports waters or pediatric drinks, not only help athletes to replenish fluids, and babies to rehydrate after an illness, they can also supply your sick pooch's body with much needed fluids after a bout of diarrhea or vomiting. (read more on the web site)

TIP #3
Deliciously plain yogurt is a healthy treat for your dog. Just as with humans, the live acidophilus in the yogurt keeps the good bacteria in your dog's intestines in balance, so that bad bacteria is swiftly knocked out. If your dog is on antibiotics, a little yogurt will also help keep yeast infections at bay (a common side-effect of antibiotic treatment). You can also give your dog acidophilus pills. (read more on the web site)

TIP #4
Chamomile tea uses the natural disinfecting effects of the chamomile plant to settle upset doggy tummies. It is recommended for colic, gas, and anxiety. It can also alleviate minor skin irritations. (read more on the web site)

TIP #5
An itchy dog can be quite an annoyance, especially as it goes around scratching itself on any piece of furniture it can reach. Forget the backscratcher. Finely ground oatmeal is a time-honored remedy for irritated skin.. (read more on the web site)

TIP #6
Dogs can be like kids at times, and as such they are bound to suffer from wounds and the occasional unexplained swelling. Try treating these ailments with Epsom salt soaks and heat packs next time...(read more on the web site)

TIP #7
Does your dog have fleas? Never fear. Before turning to the big guns, try some borax powder. The standard stuff at the store will work wonders on fleas by poking holes in their crunchy insect exoskeletons...(read more on the web site)

Home (or holistic) remedies aren't just for tree huggers anymore. It's important to take care of your dog from day to day, not just when it's feeling a little under the weather, and the best way to maintain the best health is often the most natural way. But most of all, it'll help keeping your "baby" from crying like a hound dog.

Several of the older dogs at Pet Pals are receiving dehydrated carrots and LOVE them! Dogs who were previously slow to eat are now gobbling their food....HURRAH!
The carrots can be purchased at Amazon:  http://smile.amazon.com/gp/product/B0083QBVGU?psc=1&redirect=true&ref_=oh_aui_detailpage_o03_s00

Don't forget even after you have filled your cart, you can close the window, put in smileamazon.com and your cart will appear where you can donate to Pet Pals, Inc. of Goshen County! Here is the direct link: http://smile.amazon.com/ch/83-0332827

Previously: Pet Pals is also trying dehydrated beets for a dog with allergies. We will update you on the results.
UPDATE: Our homeless dog, Buffy, is doing better with her itching after being on dehydrated beets for several weeks. She likes the beets SO much, she's now back on her diet!

A dear animal lover has recommended that Pet Pals try Beta Glucan for pets with a compromised immune system. Here is what the research shows so far:  http://www.ehow.com/about_6169866_can-beta-glucan-given-pets_.html
Pet Pals has received the following:
500 mg for acute (really bad) cases in large dogs - 100 mg for everything else (and this will be enough for most things)

http://www.betterwayhealth.com - I would just start with a bottle of the 100mg - it'll  cover most of what you will ever need.

NEW:
A dear fellow rescuer wrote to tell us about giving Vitamin C to Dachshunds to help their bones. Here's an excellent article.

"Stress is the best-known cause of vitamin C depletion in dogs. Physical stress comes in many forms: gestation, lactation, growth, hard work (dogs used for herding, hunting, tracking, etc.), vaccinations, injuries, tail-docking or ear cropping, or illness. Emotional stress, whether caused by relocation, weaning, or demanding training, can also deplete this reserve. In fact, researchers can measure the level of stress a dog experiences by measuring the degree of depletion of the vitamin in the dog's blood.
Conversely, many studies have found that dogs (as well as humans) that are supplemented with vitamin C show greater resistance to disease, and a better ability to recover from injuries or illness.

After wearing her out, the rains  and now heat came and we haven't been able to do much of anything outside. Paws crossed we will have a video for all of you in the next newsletter.

from Sylvia in OH:

SO JUST HOW LONG DO YOUR PET'S SHOTS LAST?

Definitely longer than a year! According to the top pet immunologist (aka vaccine expert) in the world, Dr. Ronald Schultz, Ph.D. - " Annual revaccination provides no benefit and may increase the risk for adverse reactions." What the heck are adverse reactions (or side effects)? Well according to the other rock star pet immunologist Dr. Jean Dodds: "Side effects from dog vaccinations can occur anywhere from instantly up to several weeks or months later. Vaccines can even cause susceptibility to chronic diseases that appear much later in a dog's life (Dodd, 2001) Severe and fatal adverse reactions include: Susceptibility to infections. Neurological disorders and encephalitis. Aberrant behavior, including unprovoked aggression. Vaccines are linked to seizures. Distemper, parvovirus, rabies and, presumably, other vaccines have been linked with poly neuropathy, a nerve disease that involves inflammation of several nerves. (Dodds,2001)"

SO HOW LONG EXACTLY DOES YOUR PET'S VACCINE LAST?
According to the recommendations of the American Animal Hospital Association (AAHA), (basically the dudes who set the standards for the vets): "Among healthy dogs, all commercially available [core] vaccines are expected to induce a sustained protective immune response lasting at least 5 yr thereafter" Here's the breakdown of the core vaccines from Dr. Ronald Schultz: Minimum Duration of Immunity for Canine Vaccines: Distemper- 7 yrs by challenge. Parvovirus - 7 yrs by challenge. Adenovirus - 7 yrs by challenge. Canine rabies - 3 yrs by challenge.

The moral of the story here, if you have no idea when your pet is due or has been vaccinated, then just run a titer test and this will confirm if you are due, rather than over-vaccinate your poor pet, setting the stage for future problems! What's a titer test? A titer test (pronounced tight-errr) is a laboratory or in-house veterinary test measuring the existence and level of antibodies (necessary to fight off disease) in your pet's blood. Basically, it's a test that will tell you whether or not you actually need to vaccinate your pet. It's also super useful when making a decision about vaccinating a pet with an unknown vaccination history, or for determining if pets have received immunity from vaccination.

Vaccinating your pet is super important so don't lose the overall message here: VACCINATE, JUST DON'T OVER-VACCINATE!

According to Dr. Dodds: "Vaccines have achieved many important benefits for companion animals, and has saved more animals' lives than any other medical advance." Want more on titer testing? Check it out:

I wanted to email you to say thanks for your page, http://www.petpalsshelter.com/homepage.html. I volunteer with a youth group where we have different activities for local kids. We are having a pet care event next weekend in honor of Pet First Aid Awareness Month. Your page had some great pet information that we will be able to share with the kids. Thanks for all the help! :-)

One of the kids in my group, Sara, found a great resource on physical therapy for pets: http://www.physicaltherapists.com/articles/physical-therapy-for-pets.html . Can you put this in your list of resources? She's actually in physical therapy herself and thought it showed how pets are just like us! Plus, I thought it would make a great addition to your page for others helping their pets.

If you have more pet care tips or information for the kids, I'll make sure to share it with them. Thanks again!

Take care,
Julie

Belgians Pay Special Tribute To Dead Pets At Animal Funeral Home

Pet owners in Belgium mourning the loss of their deceased furry, scaly or feathered companions can grieve without ever really saying goodbye thanks to niche businesses like Animatrans, a funeral home for animals.Belgians Pay Special Tribute To Dead Pets At Animal Funeral Home

Established in 1995, the Brussels-based company offers a range of services exclusively for pets, including funerals, cremation, formal burials, autopsies and even taxidermy. But it isn't Belgian animal lovers' only option to pay a special tribute to their pets.
Operating out of Soignies, just southwest of Brussels, Samsara Eternity also offers unique memorial services and products for pets, like urns decorated with paw prints.
"Having Arthur, stuffed next to me, comforts me," Myrian Waeles told Reuters, cradling her pet duck's stuffed body. "He was always waiting for me at the door when I came home, walking next to me in the living room."
Take a look at these touching photos of pets and their owners who have defied the phrase 'til death do us part.

Six Signs Your Dog Loves You!
Roxy is Homeless, but Happy!

A dog's smile can have many meanings, but when his mouth is open and relaxed, you're most likely seeing a calm, happy dog. In fact, research has shown that humans and dogs use the same muscles to express emotion - including the muscles that form a smile.

Beastility:

Beastility. to put it bluntly...having sex with an animal. yes. a dog, horse, ram, bull or frog.
Bestiality is cross-species sexual activity between human and non-human animals.

Bestiality is an alternate term for Zoophilia, sexual acts between humans and animals.

Kosher Meat:

Traditional Jewish thought has expressed the view that all meat must come from animals which have been slaughtered according to Jewish law. These strict guidelines require the animal be killed by a single cut across the throat to a precise depth, severing both carotid arteries, both jugular veins, both vagus nerves, the trachea and the esophagus, no higher than the epiglottis and no lower than where cilia begin inside the trachea, causing the animal to bleed to death. Orthodox Jews argue that this ensures the animal dies instantly without unnecessary suffering
, but many animal rights activists view the process as cruel, arguing that the animal may not lose consciousness immediately, and activists have called for it to be banned.

9 Reasons to Buy Directors and Officers Liability Insurance

I am amazed how many organizations do not have directors and officers liability insurance in place.  Both for profit and non profit. There are many things that can be done to prevent claims in this area and I will cover that in future posts. But dollar for dollar this is a very good way to transfer this risk to an insurance company. Below are 9 reasons why you should buy D&O insurance.
  1. Non Profit Director and Officer boards can be sued by donors, employees (prospective, current or former), the general public, third parties, clients, and/or government agencies.
  2. The personal assets of the individual board members are at stake! Directors & Officers (D&O) insurance can help protect a board member's home, investments, or other personal assets.
  3. The bylaws of the Non Profit may indemnify the Board but does not guarantee the entity has the resources to fund the cost of a claim. The financial backing of a Directors & Officers policy will ensure financial solvency to the organization.
  4. Directors and Officers lawsuits can have a devastating impact on the operating budget of the Non Profit organization, and can even put the entity out of business.
  5. The average cost of a Directors and Officers policy is often under $1,000 with a zero retention yet the average cost of a claim is over $100,000.
  6. Directors and Officers claims are not covered under General Liability or any other policy form.
  7. Corporate scandals have heightened regulation of accounting practices. The Sarbanes-Oxley Act has also impacted Non Profits.
  8. The Internal Revenue Service has increased their scrutiny of Non Profits. Over 400 private foundations have been audited in the past year.
  9. Directors of Non Profit boards have the same fiduciary duties as corporate board members. Non Profit Directors and Officers lawsuits may involve a variety of issues related to the daily operations of the board including: from:
  • Duty of Care - requires Directors and Officers to act prudently and reasonably in regard to the management of the organization's affairs
IF a little kitty simply scratches someone, the whole Board of Directors and Officers can be sued! YES, Pet Pals, Inc. has insurance!!
