BLESS YOUR HEART for your continued support of our NO-kill Shelter/Rescue. We are paying for more veterinary bills which are building again this week. More kitties are having dentals completed. Week before last we had to say good-bye to Sox a sweet doggie whose owner had passed away. Just because we are NO-kill does not mean we allow pets to suffer. The veterinarian was sure that Sox had a brain tumor and he said it was time. At 15 years old, there was nothing more we could do to keep her going and comfortable. We could see it in her eyes.... Please let me go. Several more of our wonderful friends also had to say good-bye to some of their pets. We truly feel your pain.
With the warmer weather, we have been busy to say the least! Along with pets in our care, we managed to help a guy who had a stroke. 18 kitties were trapped and transported to a larger facility where they were spayed/neutered and wild ones moved to a farm setting. All our crates and traps are now clean and sterile again...HURRAH!
Once again, we are also helping someone in need. Pet Pals is boarding a large dog for ten days and then she will continue to her foster home for more training. While here, Sasha is learning to walk nice on a leash and, of course, we're working on teaching her to shake hands. She almost has it down pat. After another pound of cheese, she will be a pro!
Thank you again for your support. We simply could not save lives without wonderful people like you!
Have a Happy St. Patty's Day and Blessed Easter,

Crate Cleaning
Doesn't everyone just hate that job? A neat way to make it easier to clean crates is to use Scrubbing Bubbles Bathroom Cleaner. Spray the foam on, let it set for a few minutes and wipe off. For hardened food and goo a putty knife also helps.
Dogs With Joint Problems
Most people know how dangerous Rimadyl (***see below) can be. Pet Pals and several adopters have had wonderful results with Duralactin. It is for long term management of chronic inflammatory conditions in dogs. It is all natural and will not cause problems if you give too much. Per an e-mail:
Get Microlactin instead....the human version of Duralactin. It's much cheaper! And it's exactly the same thing.
One of our adopters reports that her dog has not had to have hip surgery because of the wonderful results of Duralactin. It can be purchased on e-bay.
A gal in Washington, who operates a pig rescue, reports that Duralactin is helping her old pig!! ***The market for dog arthritis pain medications tops $130 million a year and is growing about 13% a year, consulting firm Wood Mackenzie says. But 3,200 dogs have died or been put down after taking the drugs, Food and Drug Administration records show. Almost 19,000 dogs have had bad reactions to them. Firm UP! Diggin Firm up is a pumpkin super supplement for digestive tract support in dogs and cats. It works WONDERFUL. It is Pumpkin and Apple Fiber that is mixed with wet pet food. Our kitties and Rosie (two-legged dog, spoiled with wet food) LOVE it. Pet Pals purchases it on AmazonSmile and get a donation to boot! Dogs that Dig out! After receiving another call to take a dog because it digs out, we had a suggestion. Put stock panels on the ground and wire them to the sides... problem solved! The family is keeping their dog....HURRAH! Dogs that Jump Fences! After receiving another call to take a dog because they can't keep it from jumping the fence, we had a suggestion. Run an electric fence along the top of the existing fence to teach the dog that fences BITE....problem solved! The family is keeping their dog.....HURRAH! Need Antibiotics? You can purchase antibiotics on-line from a number of places. It is sold as FishMox! Melatonin can be purchased at Wal-mart or a number of other stores. It works GREAT to help dogs sleep or calm them down during storms. http://www.canine-epilepsy-guardian-angels.com/melatonin.htm Ear Issues
Just wanted to share this new product (to me anyway) with everyone that my vet used in the ears of my foster dog with very deep seated infections. They were driving him nuts. And because the ears were so bad, the only way we could even scope him was to knock him out completely. My vet found both ears very infected and after a very thorough cleaning of both canals, he used an antibiotic gel called Poloxamer, that fills the canal space and does not liquefy and run out. It sits there and is very slowly absorbed. If you have a dog with ear issues, you might ask your vet to use this? My vet knew I would not be able to doctor the ears due to his severe sensitivity. I just got the dog home tonight so we'll see, but my vet feels that this AB gel will work very well for him and reduce his stress at the same time. He will be also on oral antibiotics as well and should not have a need to doctor the ears. Yay!!! From a friend using this resource. If someone canīt pay for their medications some places will send them free pending on their income. At the present I am getting some and did not have to pay for anything. The program is called Patient Assistance they have a long list of medicines Astra Zeneca-AZ/Me 800-292-6363 Merck 800-727-5400 Pfeizer 866-706-2400 also you can try needymeds pending on the income might have to pay a small fee or they might also be free. from: Beth White, President Dalmatian Rescue of Colorado / Melody Kennels (thanks Beth!)
(Vaccination warnings~By Request)Before You Vaccinate Your Dog: 7 Home Remedies for Your Dog When you're feeling under the weather, you might find that the perfect thing for treating what ails you is something you already have in the kitchen. Did you know that you can treat your ailing dog with some simple home remedies too? Below you will find seven great natural remedies for making your dog happy and healthy again. TIP #1Vitamin E is good for preventing those pesky age lines on your face, and it's also great for your dog's dry skin. (read more on the web site) TIP #2Flavorless electrolyte-replacing liquids, such as sports waters or pediatric drinks, not only help athletes to replenish fluids, and babies to rehydrate after an illness, they can also supply your sick pooch's body with much needed fluids after a bout of diarrhea or vomiting. (read more on the web site) TIP #3Deliciously plain yogurt is a healthy treat for your dog. Just as with humans, the live acidophilus in the yogurt keeps the good bacteria in your dog's intestines in balance, so that bad bacteria is swiftly knocked out. If your dog is on antibiotics, a little yogurt will also help keep yeast infections at bay (a common side-effect of antibiotic treatment). You can also give your dog acidophilus pills. (read more on the web site) TIP #4Chamomile tea uses the natural disinfecting effects of the chamomile plant to settle upset doggy tummies. It is recommended for colic, gas, and anxiety. It can also alleviate minor skin irritations. (read more on the web site) TIP #5An itchy dog can be quite an annoyance, especially as it goes around scratching itself on any piece of furniture it can reach. Forget the backscratcher. Finely ground oatmeal is a time-honored remedy for irritated skin.. (read more on the web site) TIP #6Dogs can be like kids at times, and as such they are bound to suffer from wounds and the occasional unexplained swelling. Try treating these ailments with Epsom salt soaks and heat packs next time...(read more on the web site) TIP #7Does your dog have fleas? Never fear. Before turning to the big guns, try some borax powder. The standard stuff at the store will work wonders on fleas by poking holes in their crunchy insect exoskeletons...(read more on the web site) Home (or holistic) remedies aren't just for tree huggers anymore. It's important to take care of your dog from day to day, not just when it's feeling a little under the weather, and the best way to maintain the best health is often the most natural way. But most of all, it'll help keeping your "baby" from crying like a hound dog.

Updates & Adoptions....HURRAH!
GGGGRRRRR.....After working on this article (with pictures) for an hour, the WHOLE thing just went away.....RATS! The only thing we hate at Pet Pals are computers! LOL After being at Pet Pals for almost five years, InkSpot finally found his own home. He was on a medical hold for a long time after having a stroke which left him running "funny". Even after his stoke, Inkspot LOVES tennis balls! Thank you Kaylene! *******************************************
Patches became homeless in the middle of December. This sweet little boy was taken to our veterinarian's office to be killed.
Patches went into our foster home where Mark decided he was a foster home failure and has adopted Patches! Thank you Mark! *****************************************
Pet Pals is often asked which one is the oldest pet here. It has to be 2-K. 2-K came to Pet Pals in May of 2001. Her rabies certificate says she was born 8/4/1998! 2-K came to Pet Pals with puppies who were adopted. Since 2-k had not been adopted, the pound where she was being fostered from wanted to come to Pet Pals and MURDER her. NO WAY...... Fifteen years later 2-K is STILL doing GREAT! She is on arthritis medicine and moves a little slower. She has had a number of potential adopters who were idiots! NO, she is not living in a barn, NO, she is not going to run free on a ranch and get ran over like their last five dogs, NO, she is not riding in the back of a truck and NO, she cannot be used for breeding! (2-K was spayed eight weeks after her puppies were weaned.) THANK YOU for helping 2-K and over eleven hundred like her LIVE! Let's call it what is it..... When you KILL an innocent animal it is MURDER. Euthaniasia: http://www.merriam-webster.com/dictionary/euthanasiaFull Definition of euthanasia 1:
the act or practice of killing or permitting the death of hopelessly sick or injured individuals (as persons or domestic animals) in a relatively painless way for reasons of mercy
MANY pets are murdered daily. Breeding needs to STOP.
***********************************************
Buffy (twelve years old), has been at Pet Pals for almost ten years. She almost had several homes of her own, but decided she liked it at Pet Pals better and snapped at the adopters. Buffy is now on arthritis and allergy medications. She would like to THANK YOU for your help keeping her alive and happy! *******************************************

Previously: Shadow turned out to be a LOVE with lots of TLC. She has had chronic diarrhea. Hundred of dollars in tests and she is not improving. We'll see if she improves after she finishes her medication. Shadow's medication did not work and now she is on two new medications. Paws crossed that she improves. *************************************
Two-legged Rosie update: Rosie continues to be.... Well, Rosie! She smiles when people pet her, she smiles when she is fed biscuits/hooves and she smiles if you look at her. Rosie smiles just thankful to be alive! Rosie can't wait for warm, nice weather so she can go outside in her wheelchair. (click her picture to see her on youtube)

For Sale!

"Yorkie Doodle Dandy" books for sale.
Yorkie Doodle Dandy pub . 1996 is still very popular. The book has inspired six U.S. memorials for the four pound dog, Smoky. On Dec. 12, 2012 The Royal Brisbane and Women's Hospital in Australia dedicated a Smoky memorial that was unveiled by the Governor of Queensland. This is on the site of a former U.S. military hospital where Smoky served as a Therapy dog in Aug. 1944. Smoky is claimed as "Australia's First War Dog." The Australian Dogs of War combat medal was awarded to Smoky in a spectacular military ceremony on 7/20/12. Smoky is the "First Therapy Dog of Record", by Animal Planet Research.
UPDATE: THE PURPLE CROSS Smoky received the world's highest and rarest honor bestowed on an Animal hero for bravery. Smoky is only the 9th in 162 years to receive Australia's Royal Society for the Prevention of Cruelty of Animals' (RSPCA) the PURPLE CROSS. The first dog was from the Crimean War of 1854. The second were Donkeys that carried out wounded on litters under heavy artillery fire for 31/2 weeks in WWI in 1915 during the battle of Gallapolis. Pvt.Simpson Kirkpatrick their handler was KIA during the fourth week of the horrific battle. This photo of Smoky, and Bill Wynne owner and trainer was taken a Dec.15'15 at Cleveland MetroParks , one of Smoky' six memorials in the U.S. Two more are to be dedicated in 2016. ( CA and N.J.) Smoky is being constantly decorated by someone unknown for over a year. Someone who loves her very much.
Smoky is wearing her Purple Cross. Beside her on the left is her certificate awarded in Australia on Dec. 11, 2015. Pamela Bobst Mayor of Rocky River, Ohio made the presentation of Smoky's Purple Cross to Bill on Dec.11,'15 here in America. The 2" medal is big on the four pound Yorkie. Bill
Linda, Thank you for sending your newsletter. Much still happening with Smoky. The Purple Cross is her crowning achievement. She will receive the New Jersey State Legislature K9 Hero award in March. It will be presented to me by an Ohio State legislator. Bill

Hi Linda,
Thanks for the newsletter, but I don't see any news about Rosie. How is our surrogate daughter? Does she ever get to run around with her wheels on outside?
Give Rosie a big kiss from us, let us know if she needs anything please. Does she have enough cow hooves to pass around and keep herself busy?
Best,
Dan

I can't believe that it has been 3 years since I last emailed you
! Adi is still doing terrific!
A lot has changed for Hannah and I. Last September we got married, we've moved into a house and we have even picked up another fur baby Her name is Cora and you will see her in a good few of the pictures. Cora is believed to be an Australian Shepard with Great Pyrenees as her secondary dominate breed. Since day one her and Adi have gotten along like long lost sisters. They were chasing each other around the yard within hours of meeting each other. Cora was a stray that my aunt took in on an Indian reservation down in Ganado AZ. Long story short my aunt was forced to get rid of her dogs and we took Cora while another dog went to my father.
In any case things are very well with us and I believe all the included pictures will tell more of a story than any text can do. Hope things are going well for you!
John
THANK YOU for the update and congratulations on your wedding!!

Hi Linda. Just wanted to let you know that Chili and Jewel are so very cute together. They play together, bark together, chase squirrels together, go out together, and just do everything together. They are so sweet. Whoever said that getting two Chihuahuas isn't twice the work, it's twice the fun, really knew what they were talking about. They run through the house until they're almost breathless. She nibbles on his ear or his arm with affection and he just rolls over on his back and enjoys. They are sharing their food most of the time. They both eat the Royal Canin with gusto and I give them about a half container of Cesar in the morning between the two, so they are still mostly crunching their food.

If we all understand that animals can use their eyes to see, ears to hear, noses to smell, mouths to eat, legs to walk, feathers to fly, fins to swim, genitalia to procreate, bowels to defecate. I'm always perplexed that most people don't believe that they can also use their brains to think. by: Gary Yourofsky

If you belong to an organization........read the following!
from: http://www.rollinsinsurance.com/nonprofitguard/9-reasons-to-buy-directors-and-officers-liability-insurance/
9 Reasons to Buy Directors and Officers Liability Insurance I am amazed how many organizations do not have directors and officers liability insurance in place. Both for profit and non profit. There are many things that can be done to prevent claims in this area and I will cover that in future posts. But dollar for dollar this is a very good way to transfer this risk to an insurance company. Below are 9 reasons why you should buy D&O insurance.
- Non Profit Director and Officer boards can be sued by donors, employees (prospective, current or former), the general public, third parties, clients, and/or government agencies.
- The personal assets of the individual board members are at stake! Directors & Officers (D&O) insurance can help protect a board member's home, investments, or other personal assets.
- The bylaws of the Non Profit may indemnify the Board but does not guarantee the entity has the resources to fund the cost of a claim. The financial backing of a Directors & Officers policy will ensure financial solvency to the organization.
- Directors and Officers lawsuits can have a devastating impact on the operating budget of the Non Profit organization, and can even put the entity out of business.
- The average cost of a Directors and Officers policy is often under $1,000 with a zero retention yet the average cost of a claim is over $100,000.
- Directors and Officers claims are not covered under General Liability or any other policy form.
- Corporate scandals have heightened regulation of accounting practices. The Sarbanes-Oxley Act has also impacted Non Profits.
- The Internal Revenue Service has increased their scrutiny of Non Profits. Over 400 private foundations have been audited in the past year.
- Directors of Non Profit boards have the same fiduciary duties as corporate board members. Non Profit Directors and Officers lawsuits may involve a variety of issues related to the daily operations of the board including: from:
- Duty of Care - requires Directors and Officers to act prudently and reasonably in regard to the management of the organization's affairs
IF a little kitty simply scratches someone, the whole Board of Directors and Officers can be sued! YES, Pet Pals, Inc. has insurance!!
