First, BLESS YOUR HEART! Due to your holiday donations, we were able to pay over $3,000 in veterinary costs within the last three weeks and that price is with our awesome veterinarians giving us discounts.......HURRAH! You can read about the pets helped in the following articles.
We are often asked what it costs to operate a no-kill shelter/rescue. Our books are balanced and our IRS forms mailed. Pet Pals had $27,005 in expenses for 2015. Expenses not covered by donations are paid by Linda and Larry York. We have had people approach us and say, "Don't you know bullets are cheaper?" Here's where we bite our tongues!
Please accept my deepest apologies for not including some Christmas pictures in last month's newsletter. I have included some more this time. Also if you didn't receive a Christmas card, it was probably returned. We had some cards and letters returned in a clear bag with their outside envelope missing so we do not have a clue whose card was shredded in the Post Office equipment!
All the Pet Pals' furkids are wanting Spring weather. We agree with them!
Have a Happy Valentine's Day,
Linda and Larry York

Crate Cleaning
Doesn't everyone just hate that job? A neat way to make it easier to clean crates is to use Scrubbing Bubbles Bathroom Cleaner. Spray the foam on, let it set for a few minutes and wipe off. For hardened food and goo a putty knife also helps.
Dogs With Joint Problems
Most people know how dangerous Rimadyl (***see below) can be. Pet Pals and several adopters have had wonderful results with Duralactin. It is for long term management of chronic inflammatory conditions in dogs. It is all natural and will not cause problems if you give too much. Per an e-mail:
Get Microlactin instead....the human version of Duralactin. It's much cheaper! And it's exactly the same thing.
One of our adopters reports that her dog has not had to have hip surgery because of the wonderful results of Duralactin. It can be purchased on e-bay.
A gal in Washington, who operates a pig rescue, reports that Duralactin is helping her old pig!! ***The market for dog arthritis pain medications tops $130 million a year and is growing about 13% a year, consulting firm Wood Mackenzie says. But 3,200 dogs have died or been put down after taking the drugs, Food and Drug Administration records show. Almost 19,000 dogs have had bad reactions to them. Firm UP! Diggin Firm up is a pumpkin super supplement for digestive tract support in dogs and cats. It works WONDERFUL. It is Pumpkin and Apple Fiber that is mixed with wet pet food. Our kitties and Rosie (two-legged dog, spoiled with wet food) LOVE it. Pet Pals purchases it on AmazonSmile and get a donation to boot! Dogs that Dig out! After receiving another call to take a dog because it digs out, we had a suggestion. Put stock panels on the ground and wire them to the sides... problem solved! The family is keeping their dog....HURRAH! Dogs that Jump Fences! After receiving another call to take a dog because they can't keep it from jumping the fence, we had a suggestion. Run an electric fence along the top of the existing fence to teach the dog that fences BITE....problem solved! The family is keeping their dog.....HURRAH! Need Antibiotics? You can purchase antibiotics on-line from a number of places. It is sold as FishMox! Melatonin can be purchased at Wal-mart or a number of other stores. It works GREAT to help dogs sleep or calm them down during storms. http://www.canine-epilepsy-guardian-angels.com/melatonin.htm Ear Issues
Just wanted to share this new product (to me anyway) with everyone that my vet used in the ears of my foster dog with very deep seated infections. They were driving him nuts. And because the ears were so bad, the only way we could even scope him was to knock him out completely. My vet found both ears very infected and after a very thorough cleaning of both canals, he used an antibiotic gel called Poloxamer, that fills the canal space and does not liquefy and run out. It sits there and is very slowly absorbed. If you have a dog with ear issues, you might ask your vet to use this? My vet knew I would not be able to doctor the ears due to his severe sensitivity. I just got the dog home tonight so we'll see, but my vet feels that this AB gel will work very well for him and reduce his stress at the same time. He will be also on oral antibiotics as well and should not have a need to doctor the ears. Yay!!! From a friend using this resource. If someone canīt pay for their medications some places will send them free pending on their income. At the present I am getting some and did not have to pay for anything. The program is called Patient Assistance they have a long list of medicines Astra Zeneca-AZ/Me 800-292-6363 Merck 800-727-5400 Pfeizer 866-706-2400 also you can try needymeds pending on the income might have to pay a small fee or they might also be free. from: Beth White, President Dalmatian Rescue of Colorado / Melody Kennels (thanks Beth!)
(Vaccination warnings~By Request)Before You Vaccinate Your Dog: 7 Home Remedies for Your Dog When you're feeling under the weather, you might find that the perfect thing for treating what ails you is something you already have in the kitchen. Did you know that you can treat your ailing dog with some simple home remedies too? Below you will find seven great natural remedies for making your dog happy and healthy again. TIP #1Vitamin E is good for preventing those pesky age lines on your face, and it's also great for your dog's dry skin. (read more on the web site) TIP #2Flavorless electrolyte-replacing liquids, such as sports waters or pediatric drinks, not only help athletes to replenish fluids, and babies to rehydrate after an illness, they can also supply your sick pooch's body with much needed fluids after a bout of diarrhea or vomiting. (read more on the web site) TIP #3Deliciously plain yogurt is a healthy treat for your dog. Just as with humans, the live acidophilus in the yogurt keeps the good bacteria in your dog's intestines in balance, so that bad bacteria is swiftly knocked out. If your dog is on antibiotics, a little yogurt will also help keep yeast infections at bay (a common side-effect of antibiotic treatment). You can also give your dog acidophilus pills. (read more on the web site) TIP #4Chamomile tea uses the natural disinfecting effects of the chamomile plant to settle upset doggy tummies. It is recommended for colic, gas, and anxiety. It can also alleviate minor skin irritations. (read more on the web site) TIP #5An itchy dog can be quite an annoyance, especially as it goes around scratching itself on any piece of furniture it can reach. Forget the backscratcher. Finely ground oatmeal is a time-honored remedy for irritated skin.. (read more on the web site) TIP #6Dogs can be like kids at times, and as such they are bound to suffer from wounds and the occasional unexplained swelling. Try treating these ailments with Epsom salt soaks and heat packs next time...(read more on the web site) TIP #7Does your dog have fleas? Never fear. Before turning to the big guns, try some borax powder. The standard stuff at the store will work wonders on fleas by poking holes in their crunchy insect exoskeletons...(read more on the web site) Home (or holistic) remedies aren't just for tree huggers anymore. It's important to take care of your dog from day to day, not just when it's feeling a little under the weather, and the best way to maintain the best health is often the most natural way. But most of all, it'll help keeping your "baby" from crying like a hound dog.

Furkids Updates!
Rocky and Nessa were pictured in last month's newsletter. They both had much needed dentals. In last month's newsletter we told about how dangerous it is not to have dentals done. Well, little did we know Nessa has liver damage probably from her rotten teeth. She is on probiotics and doing very well. They are both acting like puppies!! Rocky especially loves to chase a tennis ball. They are both VERY VERY housebroken. You knew it was coming after the SuperBowl commercial..... Everybody with a Dachshund and a hot dog suit are going to show off their dogs!! If you adopt Nessa & Rocky, they will come with their hot dog suit!
*********************************** O'Mali was once a very scared kitty. He turned out to be a real LOVE. O'Mali started acting like he was drunk. Hundreds of dollars in tests and x-rays have so far not helped him. We'll see if he improves after he finishes his medication.
*******************************
Shadow also turned out to be a LOVE. She has had chronic diarrhea. Hundred of dollars in tests and she is not improving. We'll see if she improves after she finishes her medication.
***********************************
Jumbo, who is a real character, had a dental and deep ear cleaning. We thought we were going to loose him. By the time Jumbo got back to Pet Pals, he was shaking and panting so hard his tongue turned black. The veterinarian said to knock him out and that is what we did! Jumbo finally calmed down and fell asleep at 1:30 in the morning. There are many nights we go without sleep! The veterinarian also said to keep him home and stay with him. Which means Jumbo is SO attached he will not do well moved into another home. RATS, we had a family inquiring about him. Instead Michael & Debbie in Erie, Colorado sent a donation....THANK YOU!! ****************************************
Sox who recently came to Pet Pals because her owner died, has been crashing. Blood tests show her liver and kidneys are working okay, but the muscles in her head have disappeared. Her eyes once swollen are now just drooping. Sox is 15 years old. Please keep her in your prayers. ************************************
Crazy Eyes started drooling and received a dental.
****************************** Patches also had a much needed dental. He is now waiting for his new home! Patches is VERY housebroken. ************************** The vet's office furnished this picture to show how sweet TNT Tim can be! ********************************************
Slugger had a dental. Love-a-Mouse, Money, Malone, InkSpot, Bubbles and Acey all had vaccinations.
YOUR help saving these lives is VERY much appreciated! EVERY penny donated, and then some, go to the pets.
There are NO administrative fees or paid employees. Special THANKS to Christine & Mark for all their hard work.

On Dec. 12, 2012 The Royal Brisbane and Women's Hospital in Australia dedicated a Smoky memorial that was unveiled by the Governor of Queensland. This is on the site of a former U.S. military hospital where Smoky served as a Therapy dog in Aug. 1944. Smoky is claimed as "Australia's First War Dog." The Australian Dogs of War combat medal was awarded to Smoky in a spectacular military ceremony on 7/20/12. Smoky is the "First Therapy Dog of Record", by Animal Planet Research.
UPDATE: THE PURPLE CROSS Smoky received the world's highest and rarest honor bestowed on an Animal hero for bravery. Smoky is only the 9th in 162 years to receive Australia's Royal Society for the Prevention of Cruelty of Animals' (RSPCA) the PURPLE CROSS. The first dog was from the Crimean War of 1854. The second were Donkeys that carried out wounded on litters under heavy artillery fire for 31/2 weeks in WWI in 1915 during the battle of Gallapolis. Pvt.Simpson Kirkpatrick their handler was KIA during the fourth week of the horrific battle. This photo of Smoky, and Bill Wynne owner and trainer was taken a Dec.15'15 at Cleveland MetroParks , one of Smoky' six memorials in the U.S. Two more are to be dedicated in 2016. ( CA and N.J.) Smoky is being constantly decorated by someone unknown for over a year. Someone who loves her very much.
Smoky is wearing her Purple Cross. Beside her on the left is her certificate awarded in Australia on Dec. 11, 2015. Pamela Bobst Mayor of Rocky River, Ohio made the presentation of Smoky's Purple Cross to Bill on Dec.11,'15 here in America. The 2" medal is big on the four pound Yorkie. Bill
Linda, Thank you for sending your newsletter. Much still happening with Smoky. The Purple Cross is her crowning achievement. She will receive the New Jersey State Legislature K9 Hero award in March. It will be presented to me by an Ohio State legislator. Bill

E-Mails!
Linda,
We had a half acre yard at our former home and Bliz did not like it as much as our now small back yard full of critters she can chase. Bliz is such a joy in our house. She always has to be where ever I am and the big joke is that when we are outside doing something, I am always calling her to make sure she is by me and Fred says I need to look behind me before I call; but when I do she turns with me and I can't see her until I call her and she steps toward me instead of behind me. She is so good about staying with me, a squirrel can walk across our front lawn and she will stand beside me and just watch instead of taking chase; but I know she would like to, lol When someone walks by with a dog, she will look at me and I tell her no she has to stay and she just watches them walk by. Of course she sleeps with me at night under the covers. She has to put her stomach against my thigh and sleeps like that until she gets hot and then she gets out from under the covers and curls up beside me. Needless to say she is our baby! You have a Merry Christmas! TTYL, Dee

Hi Linda,
Thanks for the Christmas letter! If you like, I will send you mine, too.
It's a little different this year, though, as you will see if you want it.
Anyway, I just wanted to tell you about my experience with Duralactin.
My old dog Buck was failing fast from hip problems, but the vet determined
it was neurological and not so much arthritic degeneration. She did her
usual thing....prescribed prednisone, the panacea of choice. Not surprisingly,
it did not help. I called the shelter I had rescued Buck from (he was set
to be euthanized the day I spoke up for him 7 years ago), and they told me about
Duralactin. I got some. It helped. Then I discovered something that might
help your adopters, too. Get Microlactin instead....the human version of
Duralactin. It's much cheaper! And it's exactly the same thing.
Later, I switched to Etarol, from Bricker Labs, and it was even cheaper yet. However, they stopped making it and I haven't spoken with them this year, so I don't know if they have anything like it now. But it helped a lot, too. Anyway, my vet gave Buck 3 mo. to live, but by then I took him back in to show her how well he was doing. He even jumped out of the back of my van and pranced around her driveway. She said, "See? We gave him more time!" I said, "what's this "we" shit?" (She had bitterly opposed my getting the nutritional supplement, calling it "foofoo shit.") Buck actually lived another year before it was time to euthanize him... yes, he did run out of strength and wasn't healing anymore, but he was quite old. And he had the only happy years he'd ever known, here on the farm, for 5 years. Then, when his day came, I remembered an article I wrote several years before, and I gave him a happy send-off and cried later... I don't know if that will help, but I believe it helped Buck on his last day. Thanks for all you do, and have a Happy Christmas season. Roberta

Linda, Ron and I are happy we are able to help. We have had some big vet bills with Brogan the past few months, but he is doing better now. He somehow got infected with Leptospirosis and his kidneys were shutting down when we took him in to our vet, Dr. Barb Buxton. On a Friday he stopped eating his normal food. On Sat. we tried giving him boiled chicken and rice. This is what our vet always told our daughter to give her dingo-lab mix dog because he had a lot of stomach issues. Brogan refused the chicken all day Sat. On Sunday he ate ground chuck Ron cooked up for him just fine, but we still felt he needed to be checked out. Monday morning he went in and Dr. Barb did local blood work. She told us he was very sick. His kidneys and liver were shutting down and she thought it was Lepto. She immediately put him on two IV's. One of fluids-nutrition and one of strong antibiotics. She kept him with her for three days and nights, changing his IV bags when necessary trying to save his life. She took him home with her. Her and her husband are vets and they practice together. Dr. Barb knows our dogs are like our children to us and we would be broken hearted to lose one. She was also at a loss as to how Brogan got Lepto. In her practice she didn't give the shot because it is very hard on the little dogs, (5 lbs), and she hadn't seen a case in one in years and years. The only thing we could come up with is, an infected squirrel or raccoon came across our backyard in the night.....urinated and Brogan somehow caught it. All our dogs are vaccinated now! By the way she sent Brogan's blood work off to be tested further and on Friday it came back positive for Lepto. After three days of antibiotics Brogan started eating again. Dr. Barb went out at lunch and bought him a rotisserie chicken! She loves animals too! ❤️. Brogan came home with us that night. We were so happy to have him home. He at first had to go back every 3 days to get blood work done, then it went to every week for a while. We are now at every three months, but his creatine count is good. His liver count is only slightly elevated but not enough for meds. We feel so blessed that he made it through this awful disease with so much support and love from our vet. Our little 10 1/2 year old female poodle has been trying to get back on a dose of insulin that agrees with her body. She was stable on 4 1/2 units twice a day for 3 years then one day she went into diabetic shock because her numbers crashed. We rushed her into Dr. Barb. They got her out of shock after a couple of hours and on the road to recovery. We needed a new dosage for her though. She, Scarlett, spent a day every week for two months at the vets getting glucose curve tests. Now it is down to once a month and she is on 2 1/2 units twice a day. Scarlett went blind when she became diabetic at a very young age. She is very well adjusted and happy for being blind. Ron and I wish you and Larry a very Merry Christmas and all the best in the New Year! Blessings, Jo Ellen ********************************
Was wondering if you still have those dog tags you've always sold. I would like to buy some if you do. I like those so much and can't find them any where else.
Let me know and we will arrange something.
Thanks, Karla
PS....This is Kobe.....Mom was being selfish and not including me in this Email. Can you even imagine??? I am doing well. I love my family now. I have fur siblings and a great dad...and then there is mom, of course. I am happy and my new dad has become one of my best friends. Anyway, just wanted to say HI.....it's been a while. Karla

How does a dog manage to always be so darn cute?!?! Have a good day!! *********************************** Samantha reports that her adopted kitties are doing GREAT! She recently added another adopted kitty! ****************************
from Karen: Yes! We are all back in Denver. I volunteer with the Rocky Mountain Collie Sheltie Rescue. I have two fosters with me right now. Do you remember Jerry? He's the dog in the middle of my picture. Elaine, my deaf dog, is on the left. Sassy is on the right. I fostered Sassy for two months this summer - she was in awful shape - underweight, little fur. She was just about to go to her furever home - regaining her fur and weight when she developed a bloated abdomen. We found out she had cancer in her liver and pancreas, and I had to let her go two weeks later. Sigh. But every little bit makes a difference. Have a Merry Christmas and Happy New Year Linda!
YES, we remember Jerry! Here's a picture when he was first rescued in 2007.: **************************************
from Jen: Olive LOVES Christmas! She got to get in her stocking early! She helped the grandbabies open presents last night and we have had a blast this morning watching her go crazy for her Santa presents! Wishing you both a very Christmas and a Happy New Year
******************************************* From Janet: Thanks for your great work. We still have Roxy/Lucy-picked her up May 2010 ********************************* from Mari (double adopter!): And we all know my dogs are not spoiled. Seriously tho try a gluten free diet for O'Mali. Romeo has only had one seizure in 50 days and I think it was a bad batch of food. Got a new bag that looked great. He used to have at least one a week. Last month we told you about a dog coming to Pet Pals who was going to be killed at a shelter. Working with Clock was a delight. He learned how to shake hands after being shown one time!
Clock found an AWESOME home. Here is the update:
Clock has done so well! He has gone past every expectation I could have asked from him. I was going to take it slow with him and the kids. But last night at 6pm he opened up the door to the living room and walked right in with the kids. He went and sat right next to them and took a nap lol. Later that night he came and slept with me. He is the best dog I have seen. Thanks and we will send a pic of him soon . Trent & Kaylene
Clock's going HOME picture. He is wearing a gentle leader which is great for dogs that pull on a leash.
Trent & Kaylene are coming back to Pet Pals to adopt another dog.....HURRAH!
******************************
After NINE years, Acey found a wonderful home! Acey had five bullets removed from her head after being used for target practice. She was dumped on the highway next to our Pet Pals' sign. Acey's face muscles were damaged leaving her with a "funny" face. Gary reports Acey is doing great and LOVES his other dog named Grizz. We are SO happy for Acey. She is worthy of two pictures!********************************* Jewel was adopted by previous adopters of Chili Bean! They adopted him in January of 2012.
Just wanted to tell you that was only the second time I've sent a picture to anybody on the internet. Ha!
I just had to show you how the two of them are getting along. They are so cute. Jewel is doing fine on the Royal Canin and seems really happy. They play and we play with them. All is well. Thanks again! Patti LOVE the updates, THANK YOU!!
