HappyThanksgiving

We hope you do not get tired of us thanking you! We truly couldn't save all these lives without your help. As the costs of utilities, pet food, cleaning supplies and kennel insurance fees keep rising, donations are VERY much appreciated.

We keep hoping Pet Pals' donations will break even with our expenses, but so far this has not happened. A recent gal wanted to know how we pay expenses when the donations are gone. Larry continues working delivering mail and both of us receive social security. All our money ($15,000 plus a year) goes to the pets. We laugh when we read about money disappearing from other non-profits. The only money we see disappearing is our own! LOL

As long as we can give, we will. Guess you know we aren't living off the animals and we don't sell the best and kill the rest. You can't take money with you and to save all these lives just warms our hearts!

Many of you helped so that lives could be saved. While some of you could only give a dollar or two, others more and others could only give prayers, you are all loved. Some of you helped us with transporting a pet or helped us get food... the list goes on. We are so grateful.

We give thanks for every life we save, and say prayers for those we cannot save.

THANK YOU again and Have a Happy Blessed Thanksgiving,

Linda and Larry York

As I've Aged!
Humphrey

I know I am sometimes forgetful. But there again, some of life is just as well forgotten. And, eventually, I remember the important things.

Sure, over the years, my heart has been broken. How can your heart not break, when you lose a loved one, or when a child suffers, or even when somebody's beloved pet dies? But broken hearts are what give us strength, and understanding, and compassion. A heart never broken, is pristine, and sterile, and will never know the joy of being imperfect.

As I've gotten older, it is easier to be positive. I care even less about what other people think. I don't question myself anymore.  I've even earned the right to be wrong.

So, I like being old. It has set me free. I like the person I have become. I am not going to live forever, but while I am still here, I will not waste time lamenting what could have been, or worrying about what will be. And I shall eat dessert every single day (if I feel like it).

I am so blessed to have lived long enough to have YOU as my friend.

MAY OUR FRIENDSHIP NEVER COME APART, ESPECIALLY WHEN IT'S STRAIGHT FROM THE  HEART!
(author unknown)
Humphrey pictured above is now 10 years old and doing well for a large boy his age!

ID Tags/Microchips Save LIVES

The following is ANOTHER reason to keep an ID tag on your pet(s) AND microchip.

from Denver Animal Shelter
On October 26th, one of our Animal Protection Officers found a stray Maltese in the Green Valley Ranch area. After finding and tracing the dog's microchip, our officer was able to reach one of the alternate contacts - the dog owner's mother - listed on the chip. She was very surprised to get the call and told our officer that she would pass on the information to her daughter. A short time later, the owner called, crying. The dog, "Sasquatch", had been missing for two years. Her husband had let Sasquatch out to use the bathroom one night and he took off. The couple was living in Thornton at the time. They searched for him for months, but eventually gave up hope. After two years, Sasquatch finally found his way home to the couple, who now live in Denver, thanks to his microchip!

Pet tags are the first line of defense to help a lost pet find its way home, but tags and collars can fall off. When that happens, a microchip is your best chance at being reunited with your beloved pet! DAS offers microchips for $25 on Saturdays and Sundays from 9AM - 11AM during our reduced-cost vaccination clinic.

Kudos to Denver Animal Shelter for caring!

Tragedy takes place everywhere EVERY day. To stop the killings spay/neuter and be a responsible pet owner. Pass this on to your friends!

Why do shelters with empty cages kill animals at night?

UPDATES!!!

Miss Sally Sue has learned to lay beside me, not always on my lap. She is such a love.

Her new job is learning to be a mobility service animal for me. She is learning to accompany me wherever I go and she couldn't be happier! Her desire to work is only surpassed by the love she has for everyone she meets.

Thank you for saving her just for me. My furry family wouldn't be complete without Sally.

By the way, it turns out she isn't a French shepherd. Sally is my beautiful Shepherd/Rottweiler mixed baby and we couldn't love her more!

Furry love,

Patricia & Bill
Sally, Jake, Samantha
and George

(Sally was originally named Farrah. She was a stray who ended up at our veterinarian's office to be killed.)

Good afternoon,

Scooby is doing great! He is getting along great with everyone and with my mom's dog Barrel. He pretty much follows me around for the most part, but he's getting more and more comfortable. We are so very happy he's here. He sure is a fluffy guy. I got the Merrick dog food. So far, the only time I have gotten him to eat was when I mixed chicken and pumpkin with his food. I attached pics from this last week. I hope you like them.

Thanks,

Joyelle

Another update:
He is still being a little finicky with food, but doing much better than that first week. He loves pumpkin! He went for his first spa treatment on Saturday and he loved it! His undercoat is trying to take over so the groomer gave us some good tips to keep it tamed. All-in-all, he's a good boy. We are so very blessed to have him.

Thank you,

Joyelle

(Are you kidding??? Scooby went for a spa treatment? Will you adopt the people at Pet Pals ? :-)

Chili Bean

Hi Linda.

Just thought I'd let you know Chili is fine and as sweet as ever. I noticed he seemed to having something going on with his mouth/throat, so I tried to look which he was not fond of. It looked to me like he might be having a problem with a back tooth, so I started trying to brush his teeth. I have finally found a toothpaste he likes and he actually lets me brush, although I must be quick about it.

It was time for his yearly vet visit, shot, etc., so I scheduled a dental for him too. I was scared about the anesthesia, but he really needed his teeth looked at. They had to extract eight teeth, and I almost died. Good grief, the poor baby. He gets Royal Canin Chihuahua food, and I thought that would help with the teeth cleaning, but apparently not good enough. They say that chihuahuas often have rather soft teeth so that predisposes them to problems. Thankfully I think it's all taken care of now. After about three days he was back to eating his regular food and doing well. I gave him the antibiotics they sent home with him and the pain meds. I am brushing his teeth to keep them in good shape. I really hate to have him undergo anesthesia, but sometimes there's no avoiding it.

He is such a major part of our lives, we want to do what's best for him. That's all the news from here. Hope all is well with you.

Hi Linda,

My new email address is: maryXXXXXXX

Brandon sends his love.  He is still as spry as a puppy and sweet as ever.

I wanted to let you know that you should be receiving a steady flow of donations from Amazon smile because I hate to go out to shop and once I discovered I could list you to receive donations from my purchases on there, I am buying everything I need, my mother needs, and everything I can find to send to my little precious grandson. Let me know if you don't get donations from them and we can sue them together. LOL!

Thanks again for loving the fur babies!

Mary
(Oslo, now Brandon, was adopted in Jan. 2008. He now lives in Georgia!)

Dingo

Mary sends LOADS of videos! We love them.

Pet Pals received Dingo from the Cheyenne Animal Shelter and Kalei was another stray from our veterinarians.)

ChloeRose

Candice sent Halloween pictures taken over the years and wrote:

In memory of Chloe and Gemma who loved to trick or treat.

(Chloe, Border Collie mix, was adopted from Pet Pals in 2006. She accompanied her owner when he was involved in a high speed chase after robbing a bank! Chloe lived in Canada.)

Toby visits regularly when his "Daddy" brings us pet food.

Toby was originally brought to Pet Pals in 2004 by a gal who wanted him saved. According to her, Toby was taken to the city dump to be shot by the city dog catcher and escaped to her close-by ranch.

Two-legged Rosie is pictured with one of her little friends, one-eyed Peep.

We receive many e-mails about Rosie so here is an update:

After we brought Rosie home from her surgery, she started having panic attacks during the night. After tearing out stitches, causing me to almost have a heart attack and needing to be stitched up twice, she was moved into our kitchen so we could watch her very closely.

Then I started sleeping with her on the floor with my arm around her. Her panic attacks stopped.  Rosie became totally incontinent and needed bandages changed every couple hours. We weren't sure she would heal, but slowly she did heal. Rosie is still in our kitchen on an orthopedic bed and still has a huge smile!

It has now been almost two years. Because of the time spent with Rosie, I've gotten behind on updating web pages and other chores. It didn't help that as Rosie was recovering, I fell and snapped the main bone in the heel of my foot.... ouch! Anyway, Rosie continues to be spoiled and we feed her canned food from a spoon. It's not that she cannot eat out of her bowl, she just likes the attention! LOL

Other than Rosie's canned food mixed with Firm Up pumpkin, she gets two Melatonin tablets in the evening. The only other cost is van loads of newspapers which she poos & pees on. Oh yea, and all the plastic bags for the soiled newspapers!

THANK YOU everyone for caring!
Linda York

Although not adopters, Bill and Diane came for a visit from Michigan! Longtime friends we hadn't seen in over 15 years!

Gumbo 10 years

Mark and Christine sadly had to say good-bye to Gumbo November 2nd after having him since January 2010. Gumbo had been a diabetic for a year and was blind. His insides shut down.

Gumbo came to Pet Pals from The Cheyenne Animal Shelter in 2005. He was a hurricane Katrina survivor. We miss having him come to Pet Pals to visit.

A number of our dear friends have lost members of their family. Our sincere condolences.

There's so much bad stuff going on in our world today, we need to periodically stop, take a deep breath & consider whats truly important & then smile!!!

Previously:
 Crate Cleaning
Doesn't everyone just hate that job? A neat way to make it easier to clean crates is to use Scrubbing Bubbles Bathroom Cleaner. Spray the foam on, let it set for a few minutes and wipe off. For hardened food and goo a putty knife also helps.

Dogs With Joint Problems
Most people know how dangerous Rimadyl (***see below) can be. Pet Pals and several adopters have had wonderful results with Duralactin. It is for long term management of chronic inflammatory conditions in dogs. It is all natural and will not cause problems if you give too much.

One of our adopters reports that her dog has not had to have hip surgery because of the wonderful results of Duralactin. It can be purchased on e-bay.

***The market for dog arthritis pain medications tops $130 million a year and is growing about 13% a year, consulting firm Wood Mackenzie says.
But 3,200 dogs have died or been put down after taking the drugs, Food and Drug Administration records show. Almost 19,000 dogs have had bad reactions to them.

Firm UP!
Diggin Firm up is a pumpkin super supplement for digestive tract support in dogs and cats. It works WONDERFUL. It is Pumpkin and Apple Fiber that is mixed with wet pet food. Our kitties and Rosie (two-legged dog, spoiled with wet food) LOVE it.  Pet Pals purchases it on AmazonSmile and get a donation to boot!

Dogs that Dig out!
After receiving another call to take a dog because it digs out, we had a suggestion. Put stock panels on the ground and wire them to the sides... problem solved! The family is keeping their dog....HURRAH!

Dogs that Jump Fences!
After receiving another call to take a dog because they can't keep it from jumping the fence, we had a suggestion. Run an electric fence along the top of the existing fence to teach the dog that fences BITE....problem solved! The family is keeping their dog.....HURRAH!

Need Antibiotics?
You can purchase antibiotics on-line from a number of places. It is sold as FishMox!

Melatonin can be purchased at Wal-mart or a number of other stores. It works GREAT to help dogs sleep.

Ear Issues
Just wanted to share this new product (to me anyway) with everyone that my vet used in the ears of my foster dog with very deep seated infections.  They were driving him nuts.  And because the ears were so bad, the only way we could even scope him was to knock him out completely.  My vet  found both ears very infected and after a very thorough cleaning of both canals, he used an antibiotic gel called Poloxamer, that fills the canal space and does not liquefy and run out. It sits there and is very slowly absorbed.  If you have a dog with ear issues, you might ask your vet to use this?
My vet knew I would not be able to doctor the ears due to his severe sensitivity.  I just got the dog home tonight so we'll see, but my vet feels that this AB gel will work very well for him and reduce his stress at the same time.  He will be also on oral antibiotics as well and should not have a need to doctor the ears. Yay!!!
From a friend using this resource.
If someone canīt pay for their medications some places will send them free pending on their income. At the present I am getting some and did not have to pay for anything. The program is called Patient Assistance they have a long list of medicines Astra Zeneca-AZ/Me 800-292-6363 Merck 800-727-5400 Pfeizer 866-706-2400 also you can try needymeds pending on the income might have to pay a small fee or they might also be free. from: Beth White, President

Before You Vaccinate Your Dog:

Pet Pals gives acidophilus when we give antibiotics.
Acidophilus helps maintain an acidic environment in the body, which can prevent the growth of harmful bacteria. Acidophilus has been used to treat or prevent vaginal yeast infections, yeast infections of the mouth, diarrhea caused by taking antibiotics, and urinary tract...

7 Home Remedies for Your Dog

When you're feeling under the weather, you might find that the perfect thing for treating what ails you is something you already have in the kitchen. Did you know that you can treat your ailing dog with some simple home remedies too? Below you will find seven great natural remedies for making your dog happy and healthy again.

TIP #1
Vitamin E is good for preventing those pesky age lines on your face, and it's also great for your dog's dry skin. (read more on the web site)

TIP #2
Flavorless electrolyte-replacing liquids, such as sports waters or pediatric drinks, not only help athletes to replenish fluids, and babies to rehydrate after an illness, they can also supply your sick pooch's body with much needed fluids after a bout of diarrhea or vomiting. (read more on the web site)

TIP #3
Deliciously plain yogurt is a healthy treat for your dog. Just as with humans, the live acidophilus in the yogurt keeps the good bacteria in your dog's intestines in balance, so that bad bacteria is swiftly knocked out. If your dog is on antibiotics, a little yogurt will also help keep yeast infections at bay (a common side-effect of antibiotic treatment). You can also give your dog acidophilus pills. (read more on the web site)

TIP #4
Chamomile tea uses the natural disinfecting effects of the chamomile plant to settle upset doggy tummies. It is recommended for colic, gas, and anxiety. It can also alleviate minor skin irritations. (read more on the web site)

TIP #5
An itchy dog can be quite an annoyance, especially as it goes around scratching itself on any piece of furniture it can reach. Forget the backscratcher. Finely ground oatmeal is a time-honored remedy for irritated skin.. (read more on the web site)

TIP #6
Dogs can be like kids at times, and as such they are bound to suffer from wounds and the occasional unexplained swelling. Try treating these ailments with Epsom salt soaks and heat packs next time...(read more on the web site)

TIP #7
Does your dog have fleas? Never fear. Before turning to the big guns, try some borax powder. The standard stuff at the store will work wonders on fleas by poking holes in their crunchy insect exoskeletons...(read more on the web site)

Home (or holistic) remedies aren't just for tree huggers anymore. It's important to take care of your dog from day to day, not just when it's feeling a little under the weather, and the best way to maintain the best health is often the most natural way. But most of all, it'll help keeping your "baby" from crying like a hound dog.

More Veterinary Bills... Ouch!

The only thing we can figure out is poor Lila was stung by a wasp and scratched her head with her paw causing a nasty infection.

Lila has been at Pet Pals since October, 2007. She has never had an application or even an inquiry. Never-the-less, she thinks she is home and loves it at Pet Pals. She is best friends with Freezy and they love to play together.

ANOTHER SAVED....

While some "Rescues" only take pets they can sell and then they kill those they can't sell, Pet Pals takes in pets without any thoughts if they are adoptable or not. Pet Pals is strictly NO-KILL (not to be confused with euthanizing. We do not let pet suffer.)

Sox's owner passed away and she needed a place of safety.  Pet Pals received a call from our veterinarian wanting to know if we could help. Just because an owner passed away, is not a reason to die.

Sox is either 12 or 14 years old and is getting very spoiled at Pet Pals. Her only fault is she can't decide if she wants inside or outside!  The other fault, which isn't hers, is sometimes she is called Sex! Make up your own stories!

Sox gets along with all the other larger dogs. She would LOVE a home of her very own.
