Hello!
 Happy Autumn!
We hope your flowers have grown pretty and your garden has been fruitful. The below picture was taken after picking veggies from our neighbor's garden. They are on vacation in New York and don't even know they have veggies. Being on vacation, I'm sure they are too busy to read this newsletter!
Enjoy!

Here We Go Again....
Here we go again....
ANOTHER school shooting. And the news commentator says, "Is this going to be so common that we won't even report it?"
Isn't this what we have done with the animals being killed daily? When a pet is old, sick or needs training, get rid of it, dump it or kill it, nobody notices and nobody cares. If we talk about it, we are too controversial per a local radio station. REALLY? So we bury our heads in the sand, think highly of those who kill until it comes to children. ALL killing needs to stop. EVERY life matters.
Where has the compassion in this world gone? The almighty dollar to some people is so great that pets are bred to be sold to whoever will pay. SHAME on those who breed.

Saying GOOD-BYE
from our mailbox:
Dear Linda, We adopted Daisy Rose from Pet Pals in 2002. She crossed the Rainbow Bridge yesterday at 13 years 2 months of age. Our sweet girl gave us so much joy and want to thank you for rescuing her so she could be part of our family. She had a long wonderful life and was greatly loved. We started fostering kittens and Daisy was always so kind to them. Keep up the wonderful work you do. Kris Gleisner and Pat Enos
from Teri:
I just wanted to let you know that Jolene is now waiting for me at the rainbow bridge. It's taken 3 weeks for me to write this e-mail. She couldn't see and was hard of hearing but was always waiting at the front door for me to come home. She wasn't able to go up the stairs anymore and cried when she was lying on her bed. She would sometimes fall when her back legs were stiff. She told me when it was time and her ashes are here with me. I miss her terribly and am crying while writing this message. She was special and I am grateful to you for letting me adopt her. Right now I can't think about another pet but maybe you will have one available when I am ready. I always enjoy your newsletters. Thank you again for my special little girl. Teri (Adopted June 2007)
Pet Pals also lost a family member. We FEEL your pain. 12 Things You May Not Know About Pet Death
1. Pets die with their eyes open. It takes active muscle control to close the eyes. (The same is true of humans.)
2. Many pets "hide" when they are sick. This is a defensive mechanism to prevent predators from spotting them in a vulnerable state.
3. Many pet owners think that when a pet goes off to "die" it is a peaceful death but many times (most times) it is not. Many pets will suffer for hours or even days before they die.
4. When humans die, the sense of sight is the first to go and hearing is the last. The same is thought to be true for dogs and cats.
5. Many pets will continue to breathe and have muscle movements after their heart has stopped.
6. The oldest living dog documented was an Australian Cattle-dog named Bluey who was owned by Les Hall of Rochester, Victoria, Australia. Bluey was obtained as a puppy in 1910 and worked among cattle and sheep for nearly 20 years. He was put to sleep on November 14, 1939 at the age of 29 years, 5 months.
7. According to the Guinness Book of Records, the oldest cat on record was a domestic longhair by the name of Spike. Until 2001 when he passed away at the ripe old age of 31 (that's 140 in human years, but who's counting?), Spike was still happily chasing spiders and enjoying life. Spike lived in Dorset, England with his owner, an aromatherapist named Mo Elkington. (Another British cat was recorded to be 34 years old when it died in 1957, but it was not documented by Guinness.)
8. Dogs do not suffer from myocardial infarction (heart attack) as people do. In dogs, the term is typically used to either define a collapsing episode (more accurately termed as syncope or loss of consciousness) or to describe sudden death of an animal in terms that people can understand.
9. Humans are not the only species to bury their dead. Both chimpanzees and elephants have been observed covering the bodies of deceased members of their groups. Scientists have observed elephants gently touching the skulls and tusks of other elephants long after the bodies have decomposed.
10. The pharaohs of ancient Egypt believed that animals and people shared the afterlife so they wanted to be buried with the animals that shared their lives. Beloved pets were frequently mummified and placed into tombs with their owners.
11. Pets get almost every disease that humans get including diabetes, heart disease, lung disease and cancer.
12. When our beloved pets die many people choose to bury them nearby, in the backyard or garden. While this may bring us great comfort it may also be against the law. In many areas, government regulations prohibit this practice. So find out what is permitted in your area before you bury your pet.

Oh NO, We're Out of Treats! What do you do when the furkids are out of treats? You start baking of course! Here is an excellent site with recipes: Dog treats Don't be afraid to mix your own recipe. Your furkids will never know you exchanged ingredients! We made up the following recipe with what was on hand: 1 Goose egg, beaten 3 C. Flour 1/2 C. Powdered Milk 1 can Beef dog food 1/3 C. Honey 1 Tbsp. Minced Garlic 1 Tbsp. Parsley Flakes Mix thoroughly and drop onto greased cookie sheet & press with a fork or your hand until very flat. Bake 250' to 300' for 50 minutes. Tip of the day: Do NOT offer your sticky goo covered fingers to 12 dogs. They will try to grab a finger and run!

Fences ARE Needed....
This is a true story that I was told when I was a young child. A semi-truck driver with a full load of sugar beets was heading back to the factory in Torrington, WY. It was dark and on a narrow two lane highway. Up ahead was a car full of two adults and children. The car had its signal light on and was waiting for the truck so they could turn into their home. All that held them back was the semi-truck traveling at full speed. As the trucker got closer, he noticed the highway full of little dogs. The dogs had heard their master's vehicle and couldn't understand why their family was waiting for their kisses. With an eighteen wheeler and a highway full of little dogs you can imagine the outcome. When one of our little dogs smile and their face lights up at my return, I always wondered if these little dogs were smiling at their family as they died. I also always wondered how the irresponsible pet parents explained this to their children and if they learned why fences ARE needed. The truck driver was my Father.

Crate Cleaning
Doesn't everyone just hate that job? A neat way to make it easier to clean crates is to use Scrubbing Bubbles Bathroom Cleaner. Spray the foam on, let it set for a few minutes and wipe off. For hardened food and goo a putty knife also helps.
Dogs With Joint Problems
Most people know how dangerous Rimadyl (*see below) can be. Pet Pals and several adopters have had wonderful results with Duralactin. It is for long term management of chronic inflammatory conditions in dogs. It is all natural and will not cause problems if you give too much. One of our adopters reports that her dog has not had to have hip surgery because of the wonderful results of Duralactin. It can be purchased on e-bay.
*The market for dog arthritis pain medications tops $130 million a year and is growing about 13% a year, consulting firm Wood Mackenzie says. But 3,200 dogs have died or been put down after taking the drugs, Food and Drug Administration records show. Almost 19,000 dogs have had bad reactions to them. Firm UP! Diggin Firm up is a pumpkin super supplement for digestive tract support in dogs and cats. It works WONDERFUL. It is Pumpkin and Apple Fiber that is mixed with wet pet food. Our kitties and Rosie (two-legged dog, spoiled with wet food) LOVE it. Pet Pals purchases it on AmazonSmile and get a donation to boot! Dogs that Dig out! After receiving another call to take a dog because it digs out, we had a suggestion. Put stock panels on the ground and wire them to the sides... problem solved! The family is keeping their dog....HURRAH! Dogs that Jump Fences! After receiving another call to take a dog because they can't keep it from jumping the fence, we had a suggestion. Run an electric fence along the top of the existing fence to teach the dog that fences BITE....problem solved! The family is keeping their dog.....HURRAH! Need Antibiotics? You can purchase antibiotics on-line from a number of places. It is sold as FishMox! Melatonin can be purchased at Wal-mart or a number of other stores. It works GREAT to help dogs sleep. http://www.vetblog.net/2013/01/dog-melatonin-uses-dose-rate.html NEW:
Just wanted to share this new product (to me anyway) with everyone that my vet used in the ears of my foster dog with very deep seated infections. They were driving him nuts. And because the ears were so bad, the only way we could even scope him was to knock him out completely. My vet found both ears very infected and after a very thorough cleaning of both canals, he used an antibiotic gel called Poloxamer, that fills the canal space and does not liquefy and run out. It sits there and is very slowly absorbed. If you have a dog with ear issues, you might ask your vet to use this? My vet knew I would not be able to doctor the ears due to his severe sensitivity. I just got the dog home tonight so we'll see, but my vet feels that this AB gel will work very well for him and reduce his stress at the same time. He will be also on oral antibiotics as well and should not have a need to doctor the ears. Yay!!! From a friend using this resource. If someone canīt pay for their medications some places will send them free pending on their income. At the present I am getting some and did not have to pay for anything. The program is called Patient Assistance they have a long list of medicines Astra Zeneca-AZ/Me 800-292-6363 Merck 800-727-5400 Pfeizer 866-706-2400 also you can try needymeds pending on the income might have to pay a small fee or they might also be free. from: Beth White, President Dalmatian Rescue of Colorado / Melody Kennels (thanks Beth!)
