We hope everyone is in the mood for Spring! Spring has sprung and as some of you may know, fur is flying! Our pets are happy they get to play in the sun longer and some of them took the time to pose for some goofy rabbit ear pictures. Some of the pets were not real thrilled. It only took 106 pictures to get a few good ones!
It is especially during the holidays that we feel so blessed to have such wonderful adopted pet family members. As usual, we have veterinary bills and other expenses so we THANK YOU VERY much for your support.
Have a Happy Blessed Easter,
Linda York, President and Volunteers

Nail Trimmers
We are asked weekly about trimming a dog's nails. Like many tasks, it is all in the equipment. Clippers with a guard make it a snap. One can't clip the nails too short and you don't have to pick up the dog's foot. Just slip it under the dog's foot while it is standing on a hard surface. The key is also to do this very quickly! Most people worry about making the dog bleed. Some dogs do have a tendency to bleed, but don't worry it is not going to bleed to death. We have had a couple dogs that caught their nail in a fence and pulled it completely out..... guess what? They didn't die! You can purchase blood stop in the powder or stick form. The clippers can be purchased in several sizes on e-bay and are under ten bucks.
|
| | These trimmers were taped (which didn't stick) so then they were glued to keep the guard from moving. |
|
| | The guard keeps you from trimming the nail too short. |

Pet Hints
We thought it might be helpful to have an ongoing article called Pet Hints. We will pass along some hints and hope you can send some our way to post in the next newsletter for everyone to share. Crate Cleaning Doesn't everyone just hate that job? A neat way to make it easier to clean crates is to use Scrubbing Bubbles Bathroom Cleaner. Spray the foam on, let it set for a few minutes and wipe off. For hardened food and goo a putty knife also helps. Dogs With Joint Problems Most people know how dangerous Rimadyl (*see below) can be. Pet Pals and several adopters have had wonderful results with Duralactin. It is for long term management of chronic inflammatory conditions in dogs. It is all natural and will not cause problems if you give too much. One of our adopters reports that her dog has not had to have hip surgery because of the wonderful results of Duralactin. It can be purchased on e-bay. *The market for dog arthritis pain medications tops $130 million a year and is growing about 13% a year, consulting firm Wood Mackenzie says.
But 3,200 dogs have died or been put down after taking the drugs, Food and Drug Administration records show. Almost 19,000 dogs have had bad reactions to them.

More Adoptions....HURRAH!
Cupid, a snappy little black Chihuahua, was finally adopted. He was going to be killed after being turned into a pound as a stray. It was around Valentine's Day three years ago so that's how his name came about.
Not many people wanted a snappy Chihuahua so it took a while to find him the PERFECT home. After a number of volunteers handled him, he became sweeter but still couldn't be placed in a home with small children. THANK YOU Dale and Emma!

Five Fascinating Facts about Cats
Any cat owner can tell you that felines are certainly a unique species. From their behavior, to their attitude, to their habits, there's no other pet quite like a cat. Below are five interesting feline facts you may not have heard yet:
1.) A cat's brain is 90% similar to a human's brain (far more similar than to a dog's brain).
2.) Cats spend approximately 70% of their lives sleeping.
3.) Female cats are usually right-pawed, while male cats are left-pawed.
4.) Cats have scent glands along their tail, forehead, chin, lips, and their front paws.
5.) Cats use their whiskers to determine if they can fit through a small space.
