Happy Valentine's Day!
We just can't let this Valentine's Day go by without telling you how much we appreciate your help. I know, we've said it before, but we truly couldn't save lives without you. It's easy for some "rescues" to take in pets, sell them or even kill them, but here at Pet Pals we NEVER kill, do not take in more pets than we can properly care for and new homes are carefully screened. This also means EVERY animal is taken to a veterinarian. Our dogs have dentals, x-rays and blood work as needed. Over $2,000 was just spent!
We knew this year was going to be sad with so many old pets here but we didn't expect to lose three in just a little over a week. When we tell some of you that we feel your pain, we are not kidding. There are times it's hard to quit crying.
Valentine's Day is supposed to be happy so we'll put our dear four-legged family members, who have gone to Rainbow Bridge, behind us and bring you a Happy Valentine's Day newsletter. Enjoy!!
Hugs, Purrs & Slurps,
Linda York, President

I wanted to write and update our contact information. We adopted "Swiss Cheese" now Furforbrains aka FurE in the Fall of 2005. He is a little furry love bug and our fur child. We recently relocated to NC and he flew with us on the redeye direct flight as after discussing with our vet that would be less stressful than a 3 day drive cross country. He is happy and healthy and just a darling addition to our lives........ I have attached a picture of FurE with his favorite toy which is a 20oz bottle, bottle cap which he fetches daily. He is happy, healthy, and enjoying life in NC.......

Hey Linda, I hope this finds you well and all is going great in your corner of the world. I cannot believe how quickly the years have gone by. I wanted to give you an update on Annie, the blue heeler mix I adopted from Pet Pals back in December 2005. You shared with me that Annie had been with a number of families before arriving at my home. I find this so unbelievable as Annie has been the best companion since day one. You estimated her age to be between three - four years old at the time I adopted her which now makes her ~12 years old. Annie is doing awesome, loves all other dogs, cats, and thinks people are the best. Annie lives with three other dogs and two cats...... Please know Annie is a total sweetheart and has been so much fun the past eight years and hopefully we will have a few more years to have fun. Be watching your mail as I am sending you a donation so you can continue to help other furkids in your care to hopefully find their forever families and homes. Take care, Linda and thank you for all you do.

Hey Linda sorry it has been forever since you've heard from us. As you may have heard there was some flooding up here in Alberta this summer and although our house was not flooded we did end up with some sewer backup.
Thank goodness our kitties are used to going camping with us because we spent a lot of time in our trailer while our house was disinfected and the basement reconstructed. When we had things all ripped apart we installed a fireplace as we were thinking of doing that before the flood came. As you can see the cats hardly like it at all. It is a very rough life they have..lol they bring us a lot of happiness everyday. Can't wait to come home for our cuddles and playtime!!
Hope all is well with you
Laurie and Wayne
THANK YOU for the Updates!!!

MORE Adoptions!
Diane recently came to Pet Pals to see our little ones. She fell in love with Panda Ann. Who wouldn't fall for Panda Ann? She loves everybody. Panda Ann had a broken back and healed at Pet Pals. Diane came back with her husband and he picked R.K. who had been picked up along a highway. So both Panda Ann and R.K. have a new home!

We are SO happy for them.
Update 2/13/2014:
They are doing great! Panda dances with me! And Scooter has claimed R.K. for his best friend. R.K.'s personality is showing through his initial bashfulness, and I love how playful he is. Gary had a heart attack last week, and we spent most of last week in Denver at the VA Hospital. They passed the travel test! And good hotel manners test! I worried how R.K. would respond to Gary, being shy toward men. No problem--I should have known it would be fine, they are good buddies, just the healing Gary needed. Four stents were placed, and his pacemaker readjusted. He feels better than he has in months! So all is well, and thank you Lord again!

Microchips
If you think your pet is safe because it has a microchip, think AGAIN. After trying to track down a microchip company on a rescued kitty, it was discovered that things are VERY confusing. Any microchip company will tell you a chip isn't registered (even if it isn't their microchip) to try to sell you their registration!! A microchip company went so far as to tell Pet Pals that a chip number would not show up unless "their" scanner was used.....Yep, they wanted $299 for a scanner! CALL all microchip companies and register the chip number. Most companies will do this for free. They will try to tell you to renew it every year. Don't fall for it, they keep your information! http://www.yelp.com/biz/24-pet-watch-buffalo http://www.complaintsboard.com/complaints/24-petwatch-c347438.html https://www.foundanimals.org/blog/5-things-you-didnt-know-microchips/ http://www.homeagainmicrochipscam.com/ Best way to keep your pet safe....KEEP YOUR phone number on your pet!!! A new volunteer, Kacy, LOVES her dog, Ash. She had city tags, rabies tags, and a microchip tag on her dog. If Kacy were to get in a simple fender bender on her way home at 6 P.M. .... let's see, the city offices are closed, the veterinary offices are closed and not everyone has a microchip scanner. There would be nobody to call. Kacy forgot the most important phone number of all....HERS!!!! By-the-way, thank you Kacy for all your help! She wants all of you to know that she now has HER phone number on Ash!

Craig's List and FREE....Warning
Most of us would do ANYTHING for our beloved four-legged family member. Unfortunately, not everyone considers their pets as family members. Here is another warning:
|
|
Since we don't have any type of weather service in this area, we purchased a small personal model so we can keep a better eye on the temperature for our beloved dogs when they are outside. The weather station transmits a signal to a computer screen. It has been very accurate and we have no reason to believe it was misreading the following:
YES, we had a wind gust of 110.3 MPH! The weatherman said it was "Breezy!"

Yorkie Doodle Dandy
Hi,
I would like to donate 20 copies of my memoir "Yorkie Doodle Dandy " for benefit of your organization. I have donated to other causes this past year. Yorkie rescue, FL., Cancer Research in Yorkies and in other breeds in PA., Rehab of a Pet Cemetery in Texas. 100% profit to your cause. . On a fixed income I can't donate cash. Yorkie Doodle Dandy pub . 1996 is still very popular. The book has inspired six U.S. memorials for the four pound Smoky who went through WWII with me and is the U.S. unoffical war dog of that war. On Dec. 12,2012 The Royal Brisbane And Womens Hospital in Australia dedicated a Smoky memorial that was unveiled by the Governor of Queensland. This is on the site of a former U.S. military hospital where Smoky served as a Therapy dog in Aug. 1944. Smoky Born in Brisbane in mid '43 is claimed as "Australia's First War Dog." The Aussies didn't have war dogs until the Vietnam war. The Australian Dogs of War combat medal was awarded to Smoky in spectacular military Ceremony on 7/20/12. See the medal below.
Smoky is the " First Therapy Dog of Record ," by Animal Planet Research. The discoveries about Smoky are many since YDD was published. It has taken 70 years to uncover all that Smoky had and is still accomplishing.
Sincerely,
Bill Wynne
This is the most back dated and only combat medal to leave Australia. The 11 Dogs of the Vietnam War were backdated, awarded the medal. The Aust.war dogs in Afghanistan are awarded the medal after 28 days in combat. Smoky was in combat 18 months.
Here is a couple of videos you will love as I do. As noted having a bit of a problem with accuracy. Smoky received high honors in Australia this past year. July 20, '12. The Australian Defence Force Tracker and War Dog Association combat medal. and then the Bronze memorial at the Hospital. Dec, 12,'12 . I have a close correspondence with a lady whose late father was on Luzon with us at Lingayen (city) Gulf airfield as a Combat Amphibious Engineer. He was left behind when the Corps of Combat Engineers went with the infantry Div. to fight in Bagio 40 Miles away. Smoky saved him too because the planes moved to the strip while the culvert would have to have been dug up would have been duck soup for the Japanese who were bombing the strip every day. And 40 planes in row would be sitting ducks along the steel matting strip and this would have been too much for them to resist. The planes, night and day fighters would have to be there to keep them operational. This would have been for an estimated 3 days of hand labor at the only taxiway we had to the protected area. The engineers were constantly patching the strip at the time to keep it operational. There are glaring errors in both videos. I am 91, not 96 or 94 Those could be tougher years. The Governor of Queensland ,Penelope Wensley is the lady in red first speaking in this video. Smoky did not fly with Gen. MacArthur. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=IAQMgguNwlw The following video is full of miss interpretations. you know the problem authors have when their stories are being retold by others. However it is very touching in spots and I'm very proud of this honor and deeply humbled by this Smoky honor. Smoky. ("Smiky" ) July 20,2012. It was found later Smoky was born in Brisbane in mid 1943 within 600 feet of Gen. MacArthur's Headquarters. (June'42-May'44) It is now the MacArthur Museum. The first speaker is Dr.David Alcorn Dir. of the Hospital. The U.S. Embassy Consul General Niels Marquardt asked for the dedication date be changed so he could personally receive the medal for me. He said on this occasion Smoky has helped further U.S. and Australian relations which grows stronger over the 70 years. You can view the video online here...the password is smoky: https://vimeo.com/46569015 What an HONOR it is to even call Bill a personal friend. We have "known" each other since a yorkie chat group about 17 years ago! Please let me know if you would like to make a donation for an autographed book with inserts! It lists for $17.95.Linda York Pet Pals, Inc.
