Happy Winter, I mean Spring!
 | | JayJay is praying for Spring! |
Oh what an amazing last couple of weeks we have had both at Pet Pals and in the world. Our prayers go out to the people in Boston, in Texas and those families dealing with death worldwide. E-mails have been coming in wanting to know if I was okay. Bless your hearts for asking! It seems like we have been snowed in for weeks. Oh, I guess we have been! First we received over 20 inches of snow, 12+ inches of snow and now we have more snow on the way. We have had vehicles stuck requiring large tractors to pull them out. We have had to shovel snow just to open doors. We have had to pry open frozen kennel latches and carry water due to frozen pipes. Because of the cold, I got a terrible crud and thought I was going to die. All this while caring for the critters and my Mother who is in congestive heart failure has kept me very busy. In between the storms the warmer weather has allowed ice to melt but it doesn't matter if it is snow or mud, we can't get the car to the highway! My apologies for not keeping up with all the e-mails. Besides the weather, things have been going very well here at Pet Pals. We have had adoptions before the storms and more adoptions are pending.....HURRAH! This is only possible because of your donations, THANK YOU! We hope you enjoy this month's newsletter. Blessings, Linda York, President (JayJay pictured above was adopted. Thanks for the update, Nadine!)

Yahoo Update!
Hi! We just wanted to give a bit of an update on Lucy! She is doing very well and seems to have adjusted to her new life! It's been snowing here today and yesterday and she has been running in it and sticking her face in it! We also took her to the horse tooth reservoir and found that she LOVES to play in the water! She doesn't really like to swim in it but likes to wade in the shallow areas and stick her nose in the waves. She has also claimed a comfy recliner as her official spot in the house and can be seen sitting in it tearing a piece of a pizza box apart in a pic I've included. She likes to cuddle with us in bed when we sleep in on weekends and can never seem to get enough belly rubs! Hope things are going well and we'll continue to update you!
Brittany
THANK YOU everyone for helping us save Yahoo now named Lucy Lou. Your donations ARE saving lives. She was going to be shot by a cop just for being homeless....Yikes!

Where Has It Gone?
Where has all the compassion gone? by Linda York There just doesn't seem to be much compassion in this world anymore. Numerous e-mails and pictures circulate daily about pets needing help before they are to be murdered. It is called animal over-population control ... People turn a blind eye A child cries out of hunger. A horse cries out of hunger. A stray cat is left to starve. A little pigeon is tossed into the air, shot for sport and begins to cry. Animals do not suffer less because they have no words ... People turn a blind eye An old pet loses its family because they are moving. Throw it away to a pound; you are not really family after all. A rancher moving to town says he took care of his three dogs by shooting them. A litter of kittens are drowned ... People turn a blind eye Many people applaud the murderers, give them awards and even donate to them saying, "It needs to be done or it's only a sport"... People turn a blind eye An 11-year-old boy strangles a cat ... People turn a blind eye. Two years later, the same boy strangles a 4-year-old child -and now he's a murderer. A bomb goes off ... Now people begin to open their eyes ? ? Kill, kill, kill ... Is it any wonder why there are all the killings? Compassion, where has it gone? (Peggy pictured above was going to be shot when her owner moved. Pet Pals was told by several people including Rescues to "just" euthanize her because of her issues. Her sisters went into a gas chamber. Well, Pet Pals didn't give up on her. Peggy was saved like many many others. Any excuse will do if you are a murderer. Please don't turn a blind eye.) |

The Needle
Most of you are thinking this article is about killing pets, but you are wrong! From our very first newsletter dated March 2001 we have stressed the importance of having ID tags on your pets. Here is your chance to get a free ID tag and have fun at the same time!
Hidden somewhere in this newsletter is a picture of a needle like the one pictured with this article. Find the needle, be the first one to e-mail us with the location and we will send you an ID tag so your pet can get home and avoid a needle!
Last month's needle was not included due to limited time, but this month one is hidden! Good luck everyone!
Another story about why ID tags AND Microchips are IMPORTANT
The story of Stubbs coming home is a great one.
He was stolen from us just over 6 years ago, and we were devastated. Neighbors saw him taken so we logged a police report. Haven't heard anything in 6 years until animal control emailed me a week ago that he was found as a stray and scanned for his microchip that we put in as a puppy - we were ecstatic!
We got him back this past week and he is exactly the same, just gray hair, almost blind, and a few rotten teeth. He even remembers his hand commands for sit, shake, roll over, and high five!
He has settled in great this week and is getting along well with our kids, just moving a little slow. I knew we'd find him through that chip someday...it's a miracle!

The following is from Lou:
You can practice this with a long line (or even a long piece of rope) to work on the "Come" portion.
If you want a jump start on class, check out this video on teaching "Leave It". It is the method I use.
The puppy in the video is wearing a head halter, but all you need to start is a collar, leash, and some good treats!
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=_MCQRIYAV5g
Use "Leave It" to ask your dog to "leave" anything: items on the kitchen counter, pills dropped on the floor, the mailman, the dog/cat/bunny it wants to chase, etc.
It works because the dog directs its attention back to you. The dog learns that you are *always* a better reward than what it thinks it is going to go after.
With my dogs, I work up to "Leave It! Come!" so that when they are off-lead I can get them back to me and hold them until the distraction has passed.
You can practice this with a long line (or even a long piece of rope) to work on the "Come" portion.
Remember -
- The rewards are always GOOD
- You always PRAISE the dog (you may not always have treats, but you can always hug your pup!)
- Don't scream or yell or sound "mean" while training as it will encourage the dog to ignore you! In fact, using no words at all when teaching this at first is helpful.
Thanks everyone!

Linda,
I asked myself what would Linda like to see on Easter and this is what I came up with.
Here are pics of some pretty content dogs. Here Nikki Licky has a steak bone I gave her to clean her teeth and she loves it.
You can see it in the pics. She got so tired I covered her up so she would be warm as she sleeps.

And then there is happy go lucky Ellie Mae with her baby. She takes her babies to her kennel and she treasures all of her babies and does not chew them up. She just packs them around all of the time.
Have a blessed Easter. We are doing nothing. Missy is dog sitting for the local gun smith today for she is feeling much better. He won't have anyone else sit for she is the best. She spoils the dogs rotten.
God Bless you both and Dani too!
With love always,
Jan
