Happy New Year!

We hope the holidays treated you all very well. It is hard to believe that 2013 is here. As the New Year begins, we reflect over the past year. Unfortunately, we had to say good-bye to a number of friends and pets. Our hearts go out to those of you who also lost loved ones. It is a reminder to treasure each and every day.

Pet Pals received a number of donations, THANK YOU, Thank You, thank you! I'm trying to find time to send out personal thank you notes. A volunteer is coming to stay for a few days to help me catch up. PLEASE don't think we don't appreciate your support. It is our supporters who are making saving lives possible.

Again, my apologies for not sending you thank-you notes yet.  As many of you know, I have a FULL plate here. Along with the shelter, I have another full household to deal with. This includes mopping up an overflowing toilet, fixing meals, washing dishes, returning messages on an answering machine, doling out medications, writing out bills and playing taxi cab to my Mother!

As if this wasn't enough, I have come to the conclusion that my Mother is a jinx! If anything is going to go wrong, it will. It is surprising the doctors who call in wrong prescriptions or forget to call them in all together, pharmacy stores who just forget to mail the prescriptions, doctor's offices who just forget we're in the waiting room and a hospital that lost a blood test..... The list goes on and on. The incompetence is beyond frightening. I have been overwhelmed trying to keep up.

Once again, your donations ARE saving lives and helping those already in our care. A BIG thank you.

May you all have a very blessed and prosperous New Year,

Linda York, Founder & President

The Needle
Needle
Most of you are thinking this article is about killing pets, but you are wrong! From our very first newsletter dated March 2001 we have stressed the importance of having ID tags on your pets. Here is your chance to get a free ID tag and have fun at the same time!

Hidden somewhere in this newsletter is a picture of a needle like the one pictured with this article. Find the needle, be the first one to e-mail us with the location and we will send you an ID tag so your pet can get home and avoid a needle!

The last contest winner was Sarah!

Hello Linda,

The needle is in the picture of Bongo and his family above the gentleman in the gray shirt.

Thanks for everything you do!!

Sarah

Sarah adopted a little dog from Pet Pals in May of 2009!

There is another hidden needle. Good luck everyone!

The Reason for ID tags AND Microchips:

Many of you who are involved with the care of animals know that the holidays are the worst time of year for pets being dumped. Over the years we have heard so many excuses it is impossible to list them all. Some of the most numerous excuses are that guests are coming and they are allergic to animals, the pet is leaving fur on my furniture (like pets never have before) or the pet no longer matches my furniture!

Any person, breeder or rescuer, who places a pet, is never sure how a family truly feels about their furry family member. The only way to try to insure the well-being of that pet is to have it microchipped and registered to them.

Right before Christmas a family discarded one of our loving kitties at a high kill facility after having her for over six years. Thanks to the microchip being registered to Pet Pals, Elizabeth Taylor was returned to us the same day. It wouldn't have been that hard for this family to pick up the phone and make arrangements for her return instead of signing for her to be euthanized. We now have a contract in place that if one of our pets isn't returned, it is a $1,500 fine plus court costs.

Our pets are LOVED by Pet Pals their entire lives!

From our Mailbag....

Hello Linda!!

Matt Schoneberg here. Tambra and I adopted Cat tail and re-named him Fenway. He is doing great. We will be looking for a brother or sister for him in early spring, but that's not why I'm writing. My mom passed on Tuesday night. In her obit and at the celebration we're having for her on Monday we are suggesting donations to Pet Pals in lieu of flowers. I hope you will see some donations in her name. Her name is Mardell Hanney and she loved animals. We always had dogs. She baked cornbread for the squirrels at her house. We will be in touch. Have a great Christmas Linda.

Dear Auntie L.,

Mom took a couple of pictures of me with my new sister, Jazzy.

Mom thought she was so lucky to be able to get these shots but really it was us who knew we were cute and just had to let her get the picture.

We were getting ready for a nap and Jazzy just happened to be leaning on me....mom thought she was hugging me, and maybe she was. I don't know, you know how cats are.......

Anyway, we thought that you would like to see them too.

Love always, Kobe

(We LOVE updates, thanks!)

Linda,

Just read the latest newsletter. We hope you have had a very successful year and have a Merry Christmas and a more prosperous 2013. I have enclosed a couple of Sasha's (Cupcake's) business cards. She continues to delight us every day and has made hundreds of patients happy at the hospital, hospice, infusion and various nursing homes. She now has two certifications and can work worldwide. Our next adventure is to be certified to work drug and alcohol rehab.

We look forward to seeing you again one of these days, soon.

MERRY CHRISTMAS AND HAPPY NEW YEAR,

Jim and Karen

(Jim and Karen we are SO proud of Sasha. We were saddened to read that she was attacked by a pit bull and glad that she wasn't hurt physically.  Please let us know how she is doing mentally. Again, thank you for your donation.)

Cats, Cats and More Cats!
BarnCat

Eighty million cats is a lot of cats. However, you would be surprised how quickly two cats can become that 80 million. If you let two cats breed at will - and then allow their offspring to breed at will, these two cats will have 80 million progeny within a decade! This assumes two litters per year and 2.8 surviving kittens per litter.

Here are the numbers:

First year: 12

Second year: 66

Third year: 382

Fourth year: 2,201

Fifth year: 12,680

Sixth year: 73,041

Seventh year: 420,715

Eighth year: 2,423,316

Ninth year: 13,968,290

Tenth Year: 80,399,780

Wow! If only my bank account would multiply like that!
