City Manager's Message

September is a busy month in Rancho Santa Margarita. This month we remember the events of September 11, 2001, with the fourth annual Patriot Day Commemoration. Our adopted 2nd Battalion, 5th Marines return this year with a display of military vehicles. Following the commemoration ceremony, join your neighbors for the final concert of the season. Be sure to wear your red, white, and blue.

September is also National Emergency Preparedness month. It's an annual reminder to prepare for the unexpected. As part of its effort to prepare, the City will be participating in the annual regional AlertOC test call on September 24, at 10:00 a.m. Register your cell phones and other contact information at AlertOC.com to be part of the test and to ensure you'll be notified in the event of an emergency.

And of course, kids are back in school this month. To mark this occasion, Police Services will be offering a free cyber safety class for parents in early October. Meet Child Safety Deputy Clay Cranford and get tips to keep your children safe from cyber-bullying. Don't forget to pre-register for this enlightening class.

Find information on all these events and more in this issue.

Sincerely,

Jennifer M. Cervantez

Free Cyber Safety Class for Parents

Monday, October 7, 2013,

6:00 p.m. to 8:30 p.m.

A new school year is an exciting time for our children. The start of a new school year also provides a great opportunity to focus on important issues and strategies to provide a safer environment for our children. To that end, RSM Police Services Child Safety Deputy Clay Cranford will be conducting a cyber-safety class for parents to discuss cyber bullying. Topics covered will include:

  • New anti-bullying laws
  • Current trends with examples from RSM schools
  • Tools and strategies to effectively supervise online activities
  • What to do if your child is a victim of online harassment

Graphic examples of bullying and the emotional impact on young children will be discussed. This class is not appropriate for young people under the age of 18 years old. Pre-registration is required.

To register, visit www.cityofrsm.org/classregistration or call Community Services at 949.216.9700. For questions regarding course content, contact Deputy Cranford at 949.635.1830.

National Emergency Preparedness Month

Drowning Prevention Awareness
The Orange County Fire Authority reminds residents that drowning is the leading cause of accidental death in Orange County for children under the age of five and is a county-wide crisis requiring the attention of us all. Fatal and non-fatal drowning is a silent event occurring in as little as two inches of water, and can occur in bathtubs, swimming pools, spas, lakes, the ocean and any body of water.

Although the highest percentage of drownings occurs during the summer, tragedies happen year round. The Orange County Fire Authority, in collaboration with all other fire agencies in Orange County, is urging all residents to increase their knowledge of proper water safety measures in the prevention of unnecessary drownings.
