Greetings!
Registration is open for the NNA State Convention. If you haven't registered yet, go to our website www.nvnurses.org and follow the link.
We are soliciting scholarships for nursing students to attend the convention. A student can attend the Meet & Greet/Mix and Mingle and the all day conference for $55 ($50 for student members of NNA). That will include a light meal on Friday evening, food at breaks and lunch on Saturday. With the room discounts, we hope it will be affordable for students to attend. I am sponsoring a scholarship from my alma mater, UNR Orvis and challenge other Orvis alumni to do the same. Any other Nevada alums out there?
NNA District 3 is planning a cruise to Scandinavia and Russia on August 12, 2013. The cruise cost will include 20 CEUs on Holistic Health Strategies for Healthcare Professionals and proceeds will benefit nursing scholarships in Nevada. Contact Travels for a Cause, 480-747-3456, 702-726-7118, yesimmensen@travelsforacause.com for more information. |

Legislative Update | |
The work of the Legislative Committee is picking up steam as we move forward to the 2013 Legislative Session. The NNA Legislative agenda at this point is:
- Support Oncology Nurses in their effort to bring parity to the coverage of all chemotherapeutic agents, both oral and intravenous
- Support APRNs in their scope of practice issues.
- Support school nurses in their effort to have Epipens in all Nevada schools.
- The Committee is evaluating an effort related to CPR education in schools, but no firm decision has yet been made.
Of course, issues always of importance to the Legislative Committee are safe staffing, safe patient handling, and whistle blower protections.
Do you have a problem or an issue that you believe belongs on this list? The agenda of the NNA Legislative Committee is determined by input from our members. Please email us if you want to bring forward an issue for consideration.
October 17 will be the ANA Campaign Activity Night. You are encouraged to volunteer for the campaign of the candidate of your choice and make sure they know you are a registered nurse. If we all come out in force on this one day, it is a way to demonstrate the political might of nurses. Join a phone bank, do a precinct walk, or just help stuff envelopes...It will help your candidate and nursing, as well.
We will be holding a Legislative Meet & Greet on October 5 at the Grand Sierra Resort in Reno, prior to the start of the NNA State Convention. We hope you will plan to attend and take advantage of this opportunity to talk with Nevada Legislative candidates about issues of concern to nursing.
