ABOUT LUANG PRABANG

Ringed by mountains, and idyllically set 700 metres
above sea level at the confluence of the Nam Khan and Mekong rivers, the historic royal capital of Luang Prabang is more than just the country's picture-perfect showpiece.

With its glistening temples, historic French provincial architecture and gracious residents, even the most jaded of travellers is soon lulled into a dream by its timeless tranquility - which is perhaps why the town was once referred to as "the Refuge of the Last Dreamers". It is a dream that comes vividly to life in the green of the ancient trees with their scarlet flowers, the saffron robes of the monks, and the pearly-white perfumed frangipanis whose fragrance mingles with that of fresh-brewed coffee and exotic spices.

Drifting like the timeless rivers along the tropical tree-shaded streets of the Old Town Centre in the shadow of the misty mountains, past the vintage colonial structures - many reimagined as cozy cafes, handicraft shops and patisseries - the languid pace of 19th century Luang Prabang remains undisturbed by big buses and trucks, thanks to its privileged status as a UNESCO World Heritage Site.

FOCUS ASIA INSIDER TOP TIPS

1.  Enjoy a local-style dinner at the night street food market

Immerse yourself in the local culture and sample a variety of different local speciality dishes - fill your plate for as little as 1  USD!

2. Wake up before dawn and pay homage to the monks

As the sun rises in Luang Prabang around 200 Buddhist monks depart from their various temples to gather their daily meal. The tradition of alms gathering dates back to the 14th century, yet still today locals wake early to prepare the food for the monks and wait quietly by the roadside to give their gifts. Although the main purpose is for locals to give alms to the monks, you will also notice small children kneeling with baskets in the hope that the monks will share some of their alms with them so that they can take food back to their family.

This daily ceremony is both peaceful and spiritual and gives you a wonderful opportunity to experience an ancient Lao tradition.
