Authorities have reported there have been
no injuries or major structural damages, although nine pagodas suffered some minor damage in Mandalay. There are still
no death reports.
The quake was centered in the jungle and hills 220 kilometers (137 miles) northwest of Mandalay, Myanmar's second-biggest city. While the area is prone to earthquakes, it is generally sparsely populated, and most houses are low-rise structures.

Cruising Halong BaySeveral newspapers published information indicating that "soon" overnight cruising on Halong Bay will be not possible anymore. After talking to several boat companies and authorities we want to make clear that so far there is NO official statement from any authority in Vietnam that overnight cruises will no longer be permitted. Cruising continues as normal.
The boat companies are aware of the regulations that wooden boats have limited cruising permissions, valid for just 15 years after their registration. Originally this was 25 years, therefore we expect the newspaper articles have stemmed from this permission validity reduction.
Moreover, we are confident that if ever this topic would be seriously discussed, there will be a compromise found - we do not believe that hundreds of boats will be instantly taken out of business. We will closely monitor this topic and will inform you immediately if we receive any reliable updates about this topic.
Sincerely,
Your Focus Asia Team
