Cooking Classes & Local Cuisine
22nd February 2016
Dear Travel Partners,

Once known as the land of the spices, Southeast Asian food is now commonly known as some of the tastiest food in the world. Much of the identity of South East Asia lies in the different food that come from unique, yet common backgrounds following the influences of Indian, Chinese, and the European colonizers along with the local flavour.

Southeast Asian cuisine includes a strong emphasis on lightly prepared dishes with a strong aromatic component that features such flavours as citrus and herbs such as mint, coriander/cilantro and basil. Ingredients in the region contrast with the ones in the Eastern Asian cuisines, substituting fish sauces for soy sauce and the inclusion of ingredients such as galangal, tamarind and lemon grass. Cooking methods include a balance of stir-frying, boiling and steaming. To an outsider's taste buds, this food is described as spicy, tangy and sweet, all mixing together to present a unique taste. Curry, which is an Indian food, has evolved to be a staple dish in South East Asia.

When visiting any country in Southeast Asia, we highly recommend trying your hand at a cooking class. These tours generally begin with a visit to a local market or farming garden, where you will be shown they key vegetables and herbs used in the country's key dishes. From there you will return to the restaurant to learn how to prepare the vegetables and what ingredients are needed to make a delicious, traditional meal. The cooking class will end with you sampling the meals you have created, giving you a real insight into the country's food culture.
