April E-Notes

Greetings!
April is alive with Earth Day events. In New Mexico we are also very conscious of the drought and the relationship of water to climate change. We continue to pray/meditate and act to care for Earth, our communities, brothers and sisters and the future.
Thank you for all you do...including some very powerful stories and pictures about how climate change is affecting everyone around the state. Edwina Beard, President of NMIPL and I will take your stories to DC as we meet with our legislators during our annual IPL meeting this week. Send us your stories we will continue to collect stories through April, so please send us yours and we hope to share some on our new website, which will be unveiled April 12!
A reminder that NMIPL has a NO-Interest Loan Fund for energy and renewable energy improvements. Loans are up to $10,000. See article in this issue.
Finally, a special thank you to so many faith leaders who offered sermons, prayers and events during the past month. Here is a sample of the prayerful and inspiring work of our leaders. Bright Idea from Church of Good Shepherd, ABQ
The Church of the Good Shepherd, UCC in Albuquerque is promoting an event for the UCC's Mission 4/1 Earth program to protect the environment. The 64 dimmable light bulbs in the sanctuary are in continual need of replacement and we can now do this with Light Emitting Diode bulbs that also use only 1/5 the power. Although the new bulbs cost more, they last much longer and save energy. Members are contributing $15 for a bulb. They should pay themselves back in about 8 years AND will still be shining brightly!

Around the nation and World
Pope Francis calls for caring for creation
The new Pope Francis has spoken numerous times already about caring for creation and also making the link of ecology and economy. Here are a few early quotes:
'Today amid so much darkness we need to see the light of hope and to be men and women who bring hope to others,' he said. 'To protect creation, to protect every man and every woman, to look upon them with tenderness and love, is to open up a horizon of hope, it is to let a shaft of light break through the heavy clouds.'
'I would like to ask all those who have positions of responsibility in economic, political and social life, and all men and women of goodwill: let us be protectors of creation, protectors of God's plan inscribed in nature, protectors of one another and of the environment. The vocation of being a "protector", however, is not just something involving us Christians alone; it also has a prior dimension which is simply human, involving everyone. It means protecting all creation, the beauty of the created world, as the Book of Genesis tells us and as Saint Francis of Assisi showed us. It means respecting each of God's creatures and respecting the environment in which we live. It means protecting people, showing loving concern for each and every person, especially children, the elderly, those in need, who are often the last we think about."
