New Play "Brothers from the Bottom" Starring Wendell Pierce !!
 
With our theatre home at Restoration Plaza undergoing a renovation, The Billie Holiday Theatre kicks off a two-year residency at The Brooklyn Music School Playhouse with Brothers from the Bottom, starring acclaimed actor and Tony Award winner Wendell Pierce, on stage March 6-29!
Brothers From the Bottom examines the complex relationship between two brothers and the hot button topic of gentrification. Four years after Hurricane Katrina, Trey Simms arrives in his childhood home of New Orleans; a place he vowed never to return. His arrival is met with enthusiasm by all except his brother, Chris, who is suspicious of Trey's claim that he has returned to work at revitalizing the city. A chess game ensues between the two brothers as they battle over a proposed real estate project. In the end, gentrification threatens the fabric of their New Orleans neighborhood, and the bond between brothers.
The cast of Brothers From the Bottom also features two-time Emmy Award winner Kevin Mambo, who played the title role in Fela! on Broadway, and original music by Edward Anderson and Darrell Lavigne of Bleu Orleans.

The Chapter was invited to participate in the Black History Month Event for the Administration of Children Services in the Bronx. We are so grateful to Sista Abena for inviting us to participate with Reflexology & Chair Yoga Services. Practitioners were: Sista Shai, Brother Sekou, Sista Deanna & Mut Shat Shemsut. For those who have not met the Chapter's Sensational Seniors of the Bronx & Harlem, see their fabulous photo below. Their monthly Reflexology Parties are hosted in the Bronx by Mother Marlene Perrineau and in Harlem by Mother Marva Nelson. They receive reflexology & shoulder massage treatments from Sista Shai who is very, very proud of their progress. They are already quite active but now that their legs and health are stronger, there is no catching up to this bunch !! Due to popular demand, the SaladMaster organization will present a healthy 5-course meal free of oils, salt & water. These presentations are to show that food can be tasty and filling without salt & grease and excess boiling. Below are the upcoming dates and each seating is limited to 10 persons, from 3p - 6:30p on Sundays. We get many calls requesting healthy food preparation from those who are not quite ready to become vegetarian, vegans or raw foodist but want some healthier alternatives. For those who still ingest Chicken, fish or may be vegan, let us know so the menu can be prepared accordingly by the Chefs. You will also learn the importance of proper cookware. Below are the upcoming dates that will transpire in Queens. These sessions must begin promptly as the Chefs have other demonstrations following after our presentation. UPDATE: On March 20 @ 8a - 11a, Heru Kweisi will be conducting Holistic Grocery Store & Farmers' Market Shopping Tour. Many have requested guidance on what to buy, how to read labels, where to buy, understanding the bar codes on fruits and identifying MSG & Aspartame in food labeling. The first stop on our Tour will be the Whole Foods Store on Houston Street as a Farmers Market. I am walking for my best friend, Monica Renee Jones. Since she has been diagnosed with MS, she has been fighting it with confidence, faith and courage for herself, her family and friends. She is my inspiration. I am going to walk with her until victory is won - help her and others end MS. Each step we take brings us closer to ending MS forever. That's why I registered for Walk MS.

About MS
Multiple sclerosis, an unpredictable, often disabling disease of the central nervous system, interrupts the flow of information within the brain, and between the brain and body. Symptoms range from numbness and tingling to blindness and paralysis. The progress, severity and specific symptoms of MS in any one person cannot yet be predicted, but advances in research and treatment are moving us closer to a world free of MS. Most people with MS are diagnosed between the ages of 20 and 50, with at least two to three times more women than men being diagnosed with the disease. MS affects more than 2.3 million worldwide.

 Happy February! We've got a recipe for a good ol' warming, vegan-cheesy broccoli soup to help soothe any frozen digits from all that pesky shoveling. No snow storm can stand a chance against this scrumptious perfect-for-winter dish. Now change into your favorite comfy clothes, grab a blender, and let's get started!
Ingredients:
1 Tbsp. coconut oil
2 garlic cloves, minced
1 medium onion, chopped
2 stalks celery, thinly sliced
2 medium carrots, thinly sliced
3 small potatoes, cut into small cubes
2 heads of broccoli florets, stems removed
3 cups vegetable broth
2 Tbsp. nutritional yeast (optional)
1/4 tsp cayenne pepper
1/4 tsp. each salt & pepper
1 cup vegan cheese
2 Tbsp. fresh parsley, chopped
Directions:
In a large pot, heat oil over medium heat. In a skillet, sauté the garlic, onions, celery, and carrots until they begin to soften. Add potatoes and broccoli florets to the skillet mixture, and sauté for 2-5 minutes, stirring occasionally. Add the vegetable broth, nutritional yeast, cayenne pepper, salt, and pepper to the skillet, and cook over medium heat for about 20 minutes, or until potatoes are fork tender. Remove from heat, add the cheese, and then blend together until creamy. Place all contents in one large mixing bowl, stir in the parsley, and serve.
