Fairmont Girl Scouts

The Girl Scout program is based on the Girl Scout Leadership Experience, through which girls discover themselves, connect with others, and take action to make the world a better place. Girls benefit from progressive hands-on leadership experiences that encourage them to take nullthe lead, learn by doing, and learn cooperatively. We are a multilevel Daisy/Brownie Girl Scout Troop 3008 and are currently accepting girls in the 1st and 2nd grades. We meet every other Wednesday at the school from 5:40 to 6:40. Our next meeting is on September 18th. If you'd like to come to our next meeting and see what we are all about, please contact Troop Leader Kelly Young at Kellygurl1@att.net for more information.

Mr. Mateus graduated from USC in 2006 with a BA in English with a creative writing emphasis. He lived in Portland, OR, after college for nearly two years where he fancied himself as a writer, but in reality he was working several part-time jobs. Still, he found some time to indulge his love of science by taking an anatomy class at Portland State University. Mr. Mateus left Portland in early 2008 to teach English to students in Cuenca, Ecuador. He was there for six months, and found time to visit the Galapagos where his love of science was again revitalized. He returned to the US in time to spend a few months working for President Obama's first campaign in Colorado, before returning to LA where he went back to school studying biotechnology at Pasadena City College. As a result of those studies, he was able to secure a one year paid internship doing molecular biology research at the USC Health Sciences Campus. After all that, it was time to decide what to do with his life and he realized that some of his happiest times were in Ecuador as a teacher, and also studying science in school. Mr. Mateus decided to pursue teaching and towards that end he spent the last two years substitute teaching and tutoring in all kinds of subjects including math, science, writing, and Spanish, before getting his current job at Fairmont.
