 Sofia 2012 Sofia 2 2012

Congratulations Sofia, 5th Grader

Sofia qualified to compete in the Junior Olympic National Championship meet on December 8th in Albuquerque, New Mexico. In order to qualify, she had to get past the Sectional Junior Olympic meet and the Regional Junior Olympic meet. Her age group is called Bantam girls (age 9 and 10). She runs for the Equalizers Track Club and her team was comprised of 7 girls. Their age group runs a 3K cross country course made up of grass, dirt, sand, etc, with both flat and hilly terrain. Her team won the sectional meet and came in 2nd at the regional meet. They came in 2nd at the National meet to the same team that beat them in the regional meet, the Corona Panthers. There were 230 girls in the race and 23 teams from all over the nation, so this was quite an accomplishment to be at the meet let alone to take a medal. The team had to battle the cold and altitude in Albuquerque so we are very proud of Sofia and her whole team.

We're Listening!

Dear parents,

We're listening. We have heard from a few of you that you have concerns about the movies we show in our after school program. We have compiled a list of our movies so that you can make us aware of any titles that you do not want your child to watch. Please click on the following link to see the list:

 California Science Center: Big Lab

Wednesday, December 5, 2012

Visiting the Exploration Grove, our first grade classes had the opportunity to explore the pond and bamboo garden in search of ladybugs and pond life. Located in the BIG LAB section of the Science Center, this amazing setting allowed the students the opportunity to investigate ladybugs through the guidance of two docents. The docents led a discussion of insect anatomy and life cycles while asking and taking questions. Afterwards, all of the students did hands-on "field work", discovering the flying and swimming powers of the ladybug.

Before heading back to the bus, we had the wonderful opportunity to walk through the Endeavor Space Shuttle exhibit. Looking above at the shuttle, so near yet traveled so far, we were in awe at such power and strength. All of the students want to return with their families to see not only the Endeavor, but the Science Center again!
