Dr. Dan's Healthy Breakfast Suggestions
Breakfast is the most important meal of the day. A good breakfast will give you energy for many hours and prevent snacking on unhealthy foods.
A breakfast that is high in carbohydrates and sugar is not a good breakfast. Avoid boxed cereals, donuts, pastries and other empty foods. Juice is not a good idea either, as it is very high in sugar and provides no nourishment, only empty calories.
Be sure your breakfast provides you with plenty of good protein and fat to nourish your body and brain throughout the day.
OUR MOST HELPFUL TIP:
Be prepared! We get ourselves into a tricky spot when we leave the house without healthy food to eat. If you let yourself get very hungry, and don't have snacks with you, you are likely to make a choice in food that you will later regret or isn't a healthy option - you're likely to grab whatever is convenient and takes no prep. Be prepared with snacks/mini meals to eat when you are not home. Bringing a small cooler for your food or a thermos full of soup can be very helpful.
Gluten and Grain Free Breakfast Suggestions
- Farm-fresh eggs, nitrate/hormone-free bacon or sausage, sautéed veggies from the night before cooked in a healthy oil, serving of beans or lentils
- Whole milk yogurt with possible toppings: berries, nuts, coconut flakes, cacao powder, and cacao nibs. If it's not quite sweet enough, say for a kid who is used to sweet yogurt, try adding a little raw honey or grade B maple syrup
- Smoothie - possible ingredients: plain whole milk yogurt, frozen berries, coconut water, egg yolk, chia seeds, avocado, ½ banana, lime or lemon juice, coconut oil, coconut butter, honey, maple syrup, small amount of almonds, coconut milk, fresh/dried coconut meat, raw cacao powder
- Smoothies (dairy free) - (see our website for recipe)
- Egg muffins - (see our website for recipe)
- Breakfast parfait - ricotta, cottage cheese, yogurt or coconut yogurt with berries, nuts and coconut
- Paleo (coconut flour) pancakes - (see our website for recipe)
- "Paleo n'oatmeal" - (see our website for recipe)
- Muffins made with coconut or almond flour (see our website for recipe)
- Frittata - eggs, a variety of veggies, good quality sausage or bacon, cheese (or hold the cheese) and spices
- Hard boiled eggs - easy to grab and go
- Leftovers (ex. soup, dinner or anything yummy!)
- Squash (acorn, butternut or spaghetti) with protein (sausage, ground beef, leftover chicken) and raw cut veggies or left over sautéed veggies- get creative!
- Make your egg muffins, frittata, or soup on Sunday and eat it a few mornings that week.
Breakfast Suggestions (grain included)
- Steel cut oats (soaked overnight) served with butter, crispy nuts, and a few berries
- Sourdough or sprouted toast (Einkorn or Kamut) with plenty of butter

2015 Environmental Working Group Summer Sunscreen Guide
The non-profit Environmental Working Group (EWG) has come out with this year's Sunscreen Hall of Shame. Follow the link below for the full story:
EWG Sunscreen "Hall of Shame"
There are a lot of sunscreens on the market: some good, some bad and some shameful.
Those in the last category are not only a waste of money and time but also potentially harmful. Here are the picks for products to banish from your beach bag.
- Spray sunscreens can be inhaled, and they don't cover skin completely.
- SPF values above 50+ try to trick you into believing they'll prevent sun damage. Don't trust them, as they do not provide both UVA and UVB coverage. SPF protection tops out at 30 to 50.
- Oxybenzone can disrupt the hormone system.
- Retinyl palmitate may trigger damage, possibly cancer.
