3rd Annual Global Well-Being Conference - Global Poverty: Human Needs, Economic Justice, and Social Change

Millersville University School of Social Work's Learning Institute invites presentations that investigate challenges faced by individuals here and abroad.  Poverty is among the greatest social issues we face today; its effects are pervasive and profound.  Poverty crosses boundaries of race, culture, and status and its consequences are of serious concern to the student, practitioner, and seeker of social change.  Poverty disproportionately affects people of color and the effects of living in poverty can be devastating for both adults and children. Grand Challenges for Social Work Management and Leadership
Deadline: February 1, 2016

We are in an era of sweeping changes in the social and political landscape that affect health and human services that is coupled with competing claims by many disciplines to manage in the human services arena. Our goal is to elevate the significance of Social Work Management through the advancement of new knowledge and innovative practice in health and human services. This year's theme challenges us to think about how key concerns within human services relate to the most compelling and critical social issues of our day. Specifically, we ask that all proposals address one of this year's conference sub-themes and how it relates to one or more of the following "grand challenges": (1) Ending homelessness; (2) Creating health equity and eliminating behavioral health disparities; (3) Providing a healthy start to all youth; (4) Reducing incarceration. 2016 Rural Sociological Society (RSS) Annual Meeting - Understanding Rural Social Class in an Era of Global Challenge
Deadline: February 5, 2016

Growing and arguably unacceptable levels of inequality have given rise to conflict and tension that revolve around class. There are worries about the disappearing middle and emergence of a social "precariat" class, about the unsettling reality of blocked opportunities for those struggling to survive, and about shifting definitions of "success" in the midst of leveled aspirations, resource scarcity, and climate change. We invite you to explore rural social class and a wide variety of other topics at our 2016 meeting. Click here for more information.

Conducted by James Bell Associates and ICF International, this cross-site evaluation advances what is known about the delivery of T/TA to child welfare agencies and courts. A series of evaluation briefs, tip sheets and a topical paper are also available that summarize the implications and lessons learned about measuring, delivering, and participating in T/TA. New York Times - An Aging Society Changes the Story on Poverty for Retirees
A typical American worker in the middle rung of the earnings ladder - whose career pay averaged out at about $46,000 a year in today's money - could retire this year at age 65 with a Social Security benefit worth 39 percent of the career average. But unless something is done to replenish Social Security's shrinking trust funds, by 2035 the first pension check for such a worker might amount to as little as 27.5 percent of her career wage, according to calculations published last year by the chief actuary of the Social Security Administration. When it comes to historic changes in the U.S. health care system, few years could compete with 2014, but 2015 gave it a run for its money. With 2016 knocking at the door, it's time to take a look back and round up the biggest health care events of the year. Click here for more information.
