The 2016 Sexual Medicine Society of North America (SMSNA) Scholars in Sexuality Research Grants

Deadline: October 1, 2015

It is the purpose of the SMSNA to increase public awareness of healthy sexuality and sexual problems, to foster the finest care for individuals suffering from sexual debility, and to encourage scholarship and research in human sexuality. It is our hope that this program will encourage young people to become interested in sexuality research and make it a focal point of their careers.

Funding is available for graduate or medical students, residents in graduate medical education training programs, and post-doctoral/post-residency fellows. Because sexual medicine is a multi-disciplinary field and sex impacts almost every aspect of human endeavor in some way, we encourage applications from aspiring researchers representing diverse backgrounds including but not limited to urology, psychology, psychiatry, gynecology, internal medicine, geriatrics, public health, physiology, genetics, molecular biology, social work, and law. 32nd Annual National Organization of Forensic Social Work (NOFSW) Conference - Forensic Practice: Promoting Social Justice for All through Policy and Practice Reform
August 21-23, 2015 - Arlington, VA
The National Organization of Forensic Social Work joins in solidarity with other professional practice organizations in standing together with widespread communities working to address and dismantle racism.  And we grieve the recent events in Ferguson, Cleveland, New York, Phoenix, Saratoga Springs, Sanford, and elsewhere.  Because of our unique work with legal systems, we wrestle with their (and thus, our) perpetuation of structural oppression, dis-empowerment, and violence.  We also recognize that legal systems can help protect the vulnerable, care for the maltreated, and advocate for the voiceless.  So, it is in this vein that we stand with those working towards promoting just, anti-racist, and empowering change. NIJ Report - Research Designs in the Real World: Testing the Effectiveness of an IPV Intervention
Many factors can influence study design, particularly when evaluating an intervention in the field. Although randomized controlled trials are considered the gold standard of evaluations, there are practical and ethical considerations that may exclude their use. This case study looks at those factors and their impact on an evaluation of an intimate partner violence intervention. Click here for more information.

NPR- 50 Years Ago, Medicare Helped To Desegregate Hospitals

The law creating a national health insurance program for older Americans was signed in 1965 after a long political battle. One big opponent was the American Medical Association. When he signed it into law, President Lyndon Johnson made a point of not inviting the AMA to the ceremony. He did invite the National Medical Association. That was the organization for black doctors. They'd long supported the bill. They saw the potential for Medicare to help desegregate health care for patients and professionals. Click here for more information.
