Dimensional Approaches to Research Classification in Psychiatric Disorders (NIH)
Deadline: October 9, 2015
This Funding Opportunity Announcement (FOA) seeks research grant applications designed to develop innovative ways of understanding mental disorders in clinical studies on the basis of experimental research criteria rather than traditional diagnostic categories. This FOA stems from the NIMH Research Domain Criteria (RDoC) project that is intended to further a long-range goal of contributing to diagnostic systems as informed by research on genetics, neuroscience, and behavior. The purpose of this FOA is to encourage applications to study mechanisms that may cut across multiple traditional diagnostic categories. National Organization of Forensic Social Work (NOFSW) 32nd Annual Conference - Forensic Practice: Promoting Social Justice for AllThrough Policy and Practice Reform

August 21-23, 2015 - Arlington, VA

The National Organization of Forensic Social Work joins in solidarity with other professional practice organizations in standing together with widespread communities working to address and dismantle racism.  And we grieve the recent events in Ferguson, Cleveland, New York, Phoenix, Saratoga Springs, Sanford, and elsewhere.  Because of our unique work with legal systems, we wrestle with their (and thus, our) perpetuation of structural oppression, dis-empowerment, and violence.  We also recognize that legal systems can help protect the vulnerable, care for the maltreated, and advocate for the voiceless.  So, it is in this vein that we stand with those working towards promoting just, anti-racist, and empowering change. This year's conference will advance a new century of social justice, dignity, respect, and acceptance for all persons.  Conferences attendees will increase their knowledge, values, and skills for working with forensic populations in healthcare, social service, and legal settings, including the courts and corrections. Click here for more information.

143rd American Public Health Association (APHA) Annual Meeting & Exposition - Health in All Policies

October 31-November 4, 2015 - Chicago, IL

The environments in which people live, work, learn and play have a tremendous impact on their health. Responsibility for the social determinants of health falls to many nontraditional health partners, such as housing, transportation, education, air quality, parks, criminal justice, energy, and employment agencies. Public health agencies and organizations will need to work with those who are best positioned to create policies (legal and regulatory) and practices that promote healthy communities and environments and secure the many co-benefits that can be attained through healthy public policy. Institute for Research on Poverty Podcast - The Biosocial Links between Discrimination and African American Health
In this podcast, University of Nebraska-Lincoln sociologist Bridget Goosby discusses her work on how the health of African American people may be linked to stress associated with discrimination. Click here to listen to the podcast. Click here to read a transcript.

National Institute of Justice Report - Police and Public Discourse on "Black on Black" Violence
The authors examine the term "black-on-black" violence, which while statistically correct, is a simplistic and emotionally charged definition of urban violence that can be problematic when used by political commentators, politicians and police executives. Inappropriate framing of urban criminal violence problems, and the policies and practices that result, constitute substantial obstacles for police departments and for minority communities struggling to solve these critical issues.  The Nation's Health - Q&A with ONDCP's Botticelli: No other disease requires patients to 'hit bottom' before getting care: US drug czar calls for comprehensive care for substance use

Michael Botticelli, MEd, might be uniquely prepared to serve as director of the U.S. Office of National Drug Control Policy: When he was sworn into the job in February this year, he had 25 years of sobriety. Botticelli has been open about his own history of alcohol abuse, and how the option for a treatment program, rather than jail, helped set his life's course for work in public health. Botticelli has worked in prevention, treatment and education about substance use, including with the Massachusetts Department of Public Health before taking over as America's drug czar.  Click here for more information.
