2014 Campus Suicide Prevention Grant (SAMHSA)

Deadline: May 27, 2014  The purpose of this program is to facilitate a comprehensive approach to preventing suicide in institutions of higher education. This program is designed to assist colleges and universities build a foundation for their efforts to prevent suicide attempts and completions and to enhance services for students with mental and substance use disorders that put them at risk for suicide and suicide attempts. Behavioral Health Workforce Education and Training for Professional (HRSA)

Deadline: June 3, 2014

In support of the White House's Now is the Time initiative, the grant program aims to expand the mental health and substance abuse (jointly referred to as behavioral health throughout the funding opportunity announcement) workforce serving children, adolescents, and transitional-age youth at risk for developing or who have developed a recognized behavioral health disorder. Grantees will be expected to expand the behavioral health workforce by supporting pre-degree clinical internships and field placements for students at accredited master's-level schools and programs of social work, psychology, marriage and family therapy, psychiatric-mental health nurse practitioner, and professional counseling that require a pre-degree clinical field placement in behavioral health; as well as, supporting doctoral-level health service psychology internship programs (including health services psychology, clinical psychology and counseling psychology) and/or doctoral-level health service psychology schools and programs.  All internships and field placements need to focus on working with at-risk children, adolescents, and transitional-age youth, and involve experiential training that offers participation in established interprofessional and integrated teams. Research and Evaluation on Firearms and Violence (DOJ)

The U.S. Department of Justice (DOJ), Office of Justice Programs (OJP), National Institute of Justice (NIJ) is seeking applications funding for research and evaluation on firearms and violence. This program furthers the Department's mission by sponsoring research to provide objective, independent knowledge and tools to meet the challenges of crime and justice, particularly at the state and local levels. Fellowships for University-Based Doctoral Candidates and Faculty for Research in Child Maltreatment (ACF)  Deadline: June 9, 2014

This 24-month fellowship program is designed to identify, develop, and empower a new generation of scholars who will use their research to generate new knowledge in child maltreatment and will pursue careers in child abuse and neglect research and evaluation. This funding opportunity announcement (FOA) will provide funds for fellowships in blocks to eligible institutions to support doctoral candidates who demonstrate a strong commitment to the study of child maltreatment, and faculty who will conduct research on critical issues in child abuse prevention and treatment and provide mentorship to the emerging scholars. Each block must consist of one faculty member and up to two students. These fellowships serve to help cultivate the academic infrastructure and support the growth of university-based research capacities. The Children's Bureau will fund proposals that utilize multi-method research designs for: economic evaluations of interventions to improve outcomes of children and families in or at risk of entering the child welfare system; studies that examine the relationship between neglect and poverty; studies that examine resiliency and protective factors for children experiencing or at-risk of child maltreatment; and secondary research on existing datasets. Doctoral candidates concentrating on child maltreatment issues in the fields of social work, social science, public health, medicine, and economics are the target of this support. Methodological Research to Support NIJ's Program of Research Examining Violence and Victimization of American Indian (AI) and Alaska Native (AN) Youth (NIJ)

Deadline: June 17, 2014  

In partnership with the Office of Juvenile Justice and Delinquency Prevention (OJJDP) and the Office for Victims of Crime (OVC), NIJ seeks proposals for research that will provide prevalence data and research detailing the occurrence and forms of victimization experienced by American Indian (AI) and Alaska Native (AN) youth living in or near tribal communities. In particular, NIJ seeks proposals to develop and test optimum data collection procedures for self-report data on violence and victimization experienced by AI and AN youth living in tribal communities or settings. The focus of the work under this solicitation is to develop, implement, and pilot test a survey and methods for providing estimates of victimization, and to determine the feasibility of using these procedures in tribal communities and settings. mHealth Tools for Underserved Populations with Chronic Conditions to Promote Effective Patient-Provider Communication, Adherence to Treatment and Self-Management (NIH)

Deadline: May 7, 2017 

The purpose of this initiative is to stimulate research utilizing Mobile Health (mHealth) tools aimed at the improvement of effective patientprovider communication, adherence to treatment and self-management of chronic diseases in underserved populations. With the rapid expansion of cellular networks and substantial advancements in Smartphone technologies, it is now possible - and affordable - to transmit patient data digitally from remote areas to specialists in urban areas, receive real-time feedback, and capture that consultation in a database. These mHealth tools, therefore, may facilitate more timely and effective patient-provider communication through education communication around goal setting, treatment reminders, feedback on patient progress and may improve health outcomes. This announcement encourages the development, testing and comparative effective analysis of interventions utilizing mHealth technologies. Healthy Habits: Timing for Developing Sustainable Healthy Behaviors in Children and Adolescents (NIH)
Deadline: May 7, 2017

This Funding Opportunity Announcement (FOA) seeks to encourage applications that employ innovative research to identify mechanisms of influence and/or promote positive sustainable health behavior(s) in children and youth (birth to age 21). Applications to promote positive health behavior(s) should target social and cultural factors, including, but not limited to: schools, families, communities, population, food industry, age-appropriate learning tools and games, social media, social networking, technology and mass media. Topics to be addressed in this announcement include: effective, sustainable processes for influencing young people to make healthy behavior choices; identification of the appropriate stage of influence for learning sustainable lifelong health behaviors; the role of technology and new media in promoting healthy behavior; identification of factors that support healthy behavior development in vulnerable populations, identification of barriers to healthy behaviors; and, identification of mechanisms and mediators that are common to the development of a range of habitual health behaviors. Given the many factors involved in developing sustainable health behaviors, applications from multidisciplinary teams are strongly encouraged. Click here for more information.

Early Care and Education Research Scholars: Head Start Graduate Student Research Grants (ACF)

The Office of Planning, Research and Evaluation (OPRE) of the Administration for Children and Families (ACF) plans to provide funds for Head Start Graduate Student Research Grants to support dissertation research by advanced graduate students who are working in partnership with Head Start programs and with faculty mentors. Competitive applicants will 1) demonstrate a collaborative partnership with their program partners, and 2) pursue research questions that directly inform local, State, or Federal policy relevant to multiple early care and education practice. Foundation for Child Development Young Scholars Program

The FCD Young Scholars Program (YSP) supports policy- and practice-relevant research on the development and learning needs of the nation's young children growing up under conditions of poverty and low-income.  FCD believes that early learning is a solid first step towards lifelong development and that promoting research in this area, conducted in a holistic and culturally sensitive manner, will help address the disparities in children's outcomes. Yale LGBT Studies Research Fellowship

Lesbian, Gay, Bisexual, and Transgender Studies at Yale University is proud to announce the inaugural Yale LGBT Studies Research Fellowship.  The Fellowship, which will be offered annually, is designed to provide access to Yale resources in LGBT Studies for scholars who live outside the greater New Haven area. Scholars from across the country and around the world are invited to apply for the Yale LGBT Studies Research Fellowship. This fellowship supports scholars from any field pursuing research in lesbian, gay, bisexual, transgender, and/or queer studies at Yale University, utilizing the vast faculty resources, manuscript archives, and library collections available at Yale. Graduate students conducting dissertation research, independent scholars, and all faculty are invited to apply.  Scholars residing within 100 miles of New Haven are ineligible. University of Florida Postdoctoral Disability Research Training Program
In partnership with a Veterans Health Administration (VHA) policy research
center, the University of Florida (UF) developed a post-doctoral fellowship program that will train six postdoctoral fellows to conduct high-quality multidisciplinary disability policy research in the area of community living and participation for Veterans with disabilities. Mental health disparities affect Latinos in the areas of assessment, diagnosis, access to services, quality of care, training, and research. There are few Latino researchers and limited research focused on the mental health of this group.

The Patient Protection and Affordable Care Act (Affordable Care Act) is creating new opportunities to reduce health disparities among minorities. We are delighted to provide a venue in which to spotlight and encourage up-and-coming researchers in Latino mental health and to engage stakeholders in a discussion about programmatic, policy, and research priorities to address mental health disparities affecting Latinos. New Dataset Available - National Crime Victimization Survey: Workplace Risk Supplement, 2002

The primary purpose of the Workplace Risk Supplement (WRS) is to obtain accurate information regarding the incidence of violence in the workplace so that legislators and policymakers, as well as academic researchers, practitioners at the Federal, state and local levels, and special interest groups who are concerned with workplace violence, can obtain a better understanding of the risk factors associated with workplace violence. New Dataset Available - Uniform Crime Reporting Program Data: Arrests by Age, Sex, and Race, 2012 

These data provide information on the number of arrests reported to the Federal Bureau of Investigation's (FBI) Uniform Crime Reporting (UCR) Program each month by police agencies in the United States. The arrest reports by age, sex, and race provide valuable data on 43 offenses including violent, drug, gambling, and larceny crimes.
