HIV/AIDS Testing and Follow-up Among the Underserved in the United States (NIH) Deadline: January 7, 2014

The purpose of this initiative is to encourage research which will increase rates of HIV screening/testing and increase the number of persons who follow-up on a positive HIV screening test and receive treatment, particularly in underserved and at-risk populations within the United States. With this initiative, the ultimate goal is to decrease the rate of HIV transmission and increase the quality of life for people living with HIV/AIDS (PLWHA) by initiating diagnosis and treatment earlier. Advancing Patient Safety Implementation through Safe Medication Use Research (AHRQ)

Deadline: September 25, 2016

AHRQ's Patient Safety (PS) Portfolio is addressing patient safety and medication research by focusing on the safe usage of medications. This perspective centers on how medications move through the health care system and how this systemic process can be improved so that patients are not harmed, while health care delivery is improved. The PS Portfolio encourages the involvement of all members of the health care team across all settings of care (including in the home). Click here for more information.

 

Bourchard Foundation Center on Law & Aging Academic Research Grant

Deadline: December 15, 2013

The Center expects grantees to meet the objectives of the grant program through individual or collaborative research projects that: analyze and recommend changes in one or more important existing public policies, laws, and/or programs relating to the elderly; or anticipate the need for and recommend new public policies, laws, and/or programs for the elderly necessitated by changes in the number and demographics of the country's and the world's elderly populations, by advances in science and technology, by changes in the health care system, or by other developments. The Historically Black College and University Campus Sexual Assault Study was undertaken to document the prevalence, personal and behavioral factors, context, consequences, and reporting of distinct forms of sexual assault. This study examined campus police and service provider perspectives on sexual victimization and student attitudes toward law enforcement and ideas about prevention and policy. Sociopolitical Determinants of Perceived Risk, 1998
The Sociopolitical Determinants of Perceived Risk project is an extensive national survey designed to assess the influence of sociopolitical constructs on perceived risk. The survey was administered to 1,204 randomly selected adults by telephone between September, 1997 and February, 1998. Minority groups (African-American, Hispanic-American, and Asian-American persons) were oversampled. Click here for more information.

Cornell Study of Occupational Retirement, 1952
The Cornell Study of Occupational Retirement is a national, longitudinal study of retirement that began in 1952 and was likely the first large-scale study of retirement behavior. The study aimed to understand and follow the transition from work to retirement -- a "well-defined" life transition in the 1950s. The study followed a cohort of 64-year-old workers into their retirement years. Over the course of the 6-year study, over 50 percent of the respondents retired. The survey includes a wide range of questions regarding: sociodemographic characteristics, family, daily activities, work (type of work and work satisfaction), economic status (income, homeownership, and household size), pensions, age identity, age stereotypes, retirement plans, health, life satisfaction and adjustment to the retirement transition. Final Mental Health Parity Rules Released
The Paul Wellstone and Pete Domenici Mental Health Parity and Addiction Equity Act of 2008 requires parity between mental health or substance use disorder benefits and medical/surgical benefits with respect to financial requirements and treatment limitations under group health plans and group and individual health insurance coverage. Article in the Journal of Health Care for the Poor and Underserved Shows Race a Bigger Health Care Barrier Than Insurance Status 
Race appears to be a larger factor in disparities in health care use than whether or not a person has health insurance. Click here for more information.
