Fauquier Community Theatre is thrilled to announce the opening of its upcoming musical, The 25th Annual Putnam County Spelling Bee. For years, this hilariously edgy, fast-paced, award-winning musical has been delighting audiences and critics alike nationally (including Off-Broadway and Broadway) and internationally. Finally, Fauquier County residents get to be a part of the action! And that is meant quite literally. Each show will include three volunteer spellers from the community, adding to the feeling of freshness and liveliness. Happy Days Star, Cathy Silvers, aka Jenny Piccolo will be an audience speller on Sunday, January 31!

The story begins as an eclectic group of six quirky mid-pubescents arrive for the spelling championship of a lifetime. While candidly disclosing hysterical and touching stories from their home life, the tweens spell their way through a series of [potentially made-up] words hoping to never hear the soul-crushing, pout-inducing, life un-affirming "ding" of the bell that signals a spelling mistake. Add to this, some equally quirky adults, and this is sure to please.

The show is comprised of a group of actors with no shortage of talent or wit. Actor credits include Ivy Elizabeth as Rona Lisa Peretti and Olive's mom, Ricardo Padilla as Vice Principal Panch and Dan Schwartz, Stephen Kutzleb as Chip Totentino, Madalyn Farmer as Logainne SchwartzandGrubenierre, Ken Wayne as Leaf Coneybear, Ahmad Maaty as William Barfee, Holly Tupper as Marcy Park, Hannah Butler as Olive Ostrovsky, Joel Saunders as Mitch Mahoney and Olive's dad, and Gregory Leggott as Carl Grubenierre and Jesus Christ.

The show is being directed by Leland Shook ("I am having a great time with this show, and this cast. A lot of us are of a like age and have had a good time with the more nostalgic aspects of the show, especially the more uncomfortable ones. Since this show is about those uncomfortable and awkward teenage moments,  I think this is the embodiment of what happens when we say, "y'know, we are going to look back on this one day and laugh".  I'm very proud of this cast and crew.") music directed by Gina Renfro-Smith, choreographed by Sandy Steinmeyer ("I have seen performances of this show all over the country and I am thrilled to see this nominee of 6 Tony Award, Broadway show performed by OUR community! This hilariously funny and edgy show is a cross between Chorus Line and You're A Good Man, Charlie Brown, all with an 80's flare of dance and costume."), and produced by Krista Poole ("I have never seen and didn't know anything about this show prior to my involvement with it over the last few months at FCT. During the process of rehearsals I have truly fall'n in love with it and catch myself singing and humming the songs everyday around the house. This engaging and funny show takes us back to how we felt during that awkward stage of life when WE were young, quirky, and in competition - all the way to the heartwarming end!").

Performances are located at The Fauquier Community Theatre at 4225 Aiken Drive, Warrenton, VA 20187 (in Vint Hill) on January 22, 23, 24, 29, 30, 31 and February 5, 6, 7. Fridays and Saturdays at 8:00 pm; Sundays at 2:00 pm. Tickets are $18.00 for Adults and $16.00 for Seniors/Students and are available online at http://www.FCTstage.org

Be Prepared
Bring this completed Audition Form to the audition.
Please come prepared with 1-2 minutes of a Broadway that shows range, musicality, and emotional depth, with an accompaniment track (we will be using tracks for the show and would like auditioners to do the same). We will be able to play CD's or any music player with a headphone jack.
Songs should be chosen from shows in a similar style (Suggestions: Phantom of the Opera, Secret Garden, Les Miserables, The Scarlet Pimpernel). This is a musically demanding show in a more classical style and we want to see what you can do! There will be a minimal dance/movement component. Come in clothing you can move in. Monologs are not required, but you may be asked to do cold readings. Please arrive and be ready BEFORE the start of the audition session. Please do your research: be as familiar as possible with the story and the show before coming to auditions.
