The L'Chaim Dinner Series Presents a Tu B'Shevat Seder
Last Day to RSVP- January 7 - The next L'Chaim Dinner Series will be a Tu B'Shevat Seder, sponsored by both Midreshet Israel (adult education) and Hazak. Mark your calendars for Thursday, January 16 starting at 6:15 pm (after minyan) in the Upper Social Hall. The cost is $20. A Tu B'Shevat seder is a lot like a Passover seder: there are 4 questions, there are 4 cups of wine, we follow along in the haggadah, and we eat dinner. Instead of celebrating the exodus from Egypt, however, Tu B'Shevat celebrates the new year of trees.
The food will be delicious, we'll learn a lot about Tu B'Shevat, and we'll have fun. The cost is $20; please send your check (payable to Congregation Tifereth Israel) to Millie Cave, Congregation Tifereth Israel, 1354 E. Broad Street, Columbus, OH 43205. Several of you have already registered for this L'Chaim Dinner Series event. Please see below for more information.

D'var Torah
Moses, the great prophet of our tradition, is introduced to us in this week's Torah portion, Shemot--the first Parashah in the Book of Exodus. We actually learn quite a bit about him even before God called him to be a prophet. We read about his birth, placement in the Nile, upbringing in Pharaoh's palace, his concern for the Israelite slaves, his killing of an Egyptian taskmaster and his flight to Midian where he marries, becomes a shepherd and settles down.
One day, God spoke to him from burning bush and his reaction is an interesting one. If we recall his palatial upbringing, we could imagine that he might respond with enthusiasm at the opportunity to return to Egypt with a powerful backer like God. Here was an opportunity to get back into the inner circle of the greatest empire on earth. On the contrary, though, he is quite reticent to take on the role. He feared that not only would Pharaoh not listen to him, but would neither would the Israelites. Our tradition sees this as a sign of his modesty.
It is significant that despite his modesty, Moses still went ahead with the request made by God. We realize as the story goes on just how risky this was. Like Abraham, he was setting off on a mission that would change his life entirely and possibly put himself in danger. Why did he do it? Because like Abraham, and like many others throughout our history, he understood the importance of stepping forward to be a leader. He knew that if he did not take on this role no one would.
This is just one of many examples of Moses' unique form of leadership. Despite his modesty, he showed tremendous strength and tenacity. We have been blessed with leaders like this over the centuries that have allowed us to survive and thrive into the 21st Century and beyond.

Jewish Joke of the Week
Joseph is thrilled to be taking Bracha, his 95year old mother to see the hit show, "Fiddler on the Roof." He's excited not only because Bracha hasn't seen it before, but also because she came to America in the late 1930s from one of the many Anatevka-like Russian shtetls. Not only does Joseph book the most expensive seats in the theatre, but he also buys Bracha some smart new clothes to wear. And on the night of the show, he even orders a stretch limo to take them there and back. He wants it to be a memorable evening and doesn't want to leave anything to chance. On the night of the show, they arrive in style, take their seats and watch the performance. And as soon as the final curtain comes down, Joseph asks Bracha, "Well Mom, what did you think of the show? Be honest. Did it bring back any memories for you?" Bracha sits there for a while, then turns to Joseph and gives both a nod and a shrug. "Yes bubbeleh, it did," she replies, "but I really don't remember that much singing.

Registration Underway for Summer Programs at Camp Ramah
Surrounded by the beauty of Wisconsin's Northwoods, Ramah campers and staff create a very special and vibrant Jewish community. The Ramah experience begins with each cabin - where campers learn what it means to share and live with peers 24 hours a day, seven days a week. With the guidance of caring and specially-trained counselors, each cabin develops its own personality and special bond. Every cabin is a part of an aidah or age division.
Each aidah participates in fun and educational activities, enjoys meals in the dining hall, goes on campouts, plays sports and more. With each passing summer, campers become closer, linked together by shared experiences and happy times. The song and dance festivals and sporting events are just a few of the many exciting camp-wide activities that campers look forward to throughout the summer.
Campers look forward to Erev Shabbat when the entire camp gathers by the lake. As the sun begins to set and the melodies of Shabbat are heard, campers and staff alike feel a sense of peace and a deep connection to their friends, to their community and to their Jewish heritage.
Partial summer programs are available for 4th, 5th, and 6th graders.

Social Action
In Central Ohio, more than 8,000 men, women and children will fill every homeless shelter bed again this year. The need only increases during the coldest months of the year. People experiencing homelessness live in the shadows of the worst economy in a generation. Once proud workers, newly homeless moms and dads, aunts and uncles have lost their struggle to provide food and homes for their families. They need our help. Become a Housing Hero and help families and individuals every day of the year. Give just $1 a day - $30 a month. Your gift will help people get off the streets and into housing. $1 is about the same as a daily cup of coffee; that's all it takes to shelter people and provide secure futures and stable homes.
Support Tifereth Israel's participation in the "Day to End Homelessness" through the Community Shelter Board. Bring a check made out to CSB to the office, visit http://daytoendhomelessness.org/, or contribute through the Telethon on 10TV on January 22, 2014. We can end homelessness in Central Ohio!
