Save the Date - Tifereth Israel Picnic!
Games, entertainment, rides and food! Our annual picnic will take place on Wednesday, August 7 from 6 - 8:30 pm at the Pavilion behind the JCC. We will also have our 3rd Annual Softball Game. Anyone interested in playing, please contact Doug Segerman at djsegerman@earthlink.net. It is always a wonderful time to get together with our fellow congregants. More details to follow. The picnic is sponsored in full by the Willa Sniderman Fund of the Tifereth Israel Foundation. See you all there!
High Holiday Information Packet
High Holiday Information packets, including Tifereth's High Holiday Information brochure, the Yizkor Book Form and the High Holiday Guest Ticket and Special Request Form were mailed out this week. Please fill out your forms and submit them to the synagogue office by Monday, August 19.
Kids! What's the Matter with Kids Today?
Absolutely nothing! We love kids and welcome them in our congregation and sanctuary. Jewish tradition teaches us that the sounds of infants testify to God's glory and power. If your child is "testifying," not to worry. If, however, your child really wants a break please feel free to bring them to the Atrium or the nursery until he or she is ready to return to the Sanctuary. All children are invited to the Bimah for Adon Olam for a special treat from the Rabbis. When services are over, don't miss the "Kiddie Table" in the Social Hall at Kiddush (PB&J on Challah!); we look forward to greeting you there.

ACH Debit Has Arrived! In order to assist our congregants in paying their synagogue obligations, we now have the ability to automatically withdraw money from your checking account each month or less frequently if desired. This is in addition to accepting credit cards, which, as you may know, cost the synagogue approximately 2.3%. We can withdraw any amount you decide on a monthly basis, which will be around the 15th of the month. If you are interested in more information on this brand new service we offer, please contact Cheryl Laver, our Finance Manager, at the synagogue or by email at claver@tiferethisrael.org. |

D'var Torah
Parashat Re'eh begins with a dramatic speech by Moses to the Israelites in which he places before them a choice: blessing or curse. The blessings will come from following God's laws and the curse from ignoring them.
This passage echoes a theme which is found throughout the Hebrew Bible and in Jewish philosophy. Ever since the time of the Tree of Knowledge of Good and Evil in the Garden of Eden, we have been instructed that life is about making choices. Some of those choices do not have important consequences (choosing to see one movie instead of another, or deciding to have cole slaw instead of potato chips), but others have a deep impact (who to choose as a life partner, how to treat those less fortunate around us). Judaism teaches us that while God may command us, ultimately it is up to us to decide how to act.
Jewish philosophers have noted that even though we do have free will-and this is the way God always intended it-we are often quite limited in our choices. None of us chose where we were born; ask any Jew born in the early 20th Century what impact that had! We cannot choose our families. We can watch what we eat and exercise, but certain medical conditions are beyond our control. We live in a world in which not everything is our choice; there are limits. What our tradition teaches us, however, is that even when our options are few, we always have the freedom to choose our outlook and attitude. During the dark days of the Holocaust when Jews were stripped of all freedom, there was still a choice about how to face the situation; most chose to live in a dignified way despite the degradation.
It is no different today; we are not at total liberty to choose our destiny. What we are free to do, however, is to choose how we want to face the hand we have been dealt.

Jewish Joke of the Week
It was mealtime during a flight on ElAl. "Would you like dinner?" the flight attendant asked Moshe. "What are my choices?" Moshe asked. "Yes or No, " she replied.

Social Action
Donate To The Food Pantry
Tifereth Israel delivers the non-perishable food items donated by our members on an ongoing basis to the Lutheran Social Services Food Pantry. Canned tuna, chunky soups, helper meals and baby foods are always needed, as are personal care products that cannot be purchased with Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program (SNAP), formerly food stamp, assistance. Please place these items in the designated box in the atrium. Please remember those in our community, both families and older adults.
Want to be more involved with bringing positive change to our community?
The Crime and Violence committee advises that through the efforts of Judge Gill a diversion coordinator has been hired to work with low risk juvenile offenders. Juveniles will be given the opportunity to participate in a Restorative Justice Circle that will not only divert them from the traditional criminal justice system, but will hold them be accountable in a life-changing way .
Volunteers are crucially needed for three initial Circles on the South side, the North Linden area, and the West side. If interested in learning more, please contact 614-525-3130 or email RJ_Circles@fccourts.org. or Amy Byler at the BREAD office at 220-9363.
