D'var Torah
Parashat Naso, our weekly Torah portion, covers many different topics from a second census of the Levites, to what to do when a woman is suspected of adultery to the dedication gifts for the Tabernacle.
In the midst of these various issues, there is a set of verses in which God tells Moses to remove any Israelites from the camp with "an eruption or a discharge and anyone defiled by a corpse." Before the Israelites moved on, the text tells us that these instructions were followed.
To our modern sensibilities, these verses seem a bit harsh and unfair. Why should someone with a disability or a disease be excluded? We certainly would not do this today. Our Chumash brings an unusual midrash (rabbinic interpretation) to explain this problem--which they must have found to be a bit troublesome or the rabbis would not have commented on it. The midrash explains that this was not a hygienic matter; the Israelites were all blemished as a result of their time spent as slaves in Egypt. After the Exodus from slavery and upon their arrival at Mt. Sinai, the midrash says that everyone's deformities and physical ailments were miraculously cured. In time, however, as the experience at Sinai faded into memory, the Israelites began to grumble, rebel and stray from the path set by the Torah. As they did so, the midrash suggests that the deformities and ailments began to re-appear. In this way, the physical symptoms were really an indication of a deeper spiritual problem.
The rabbis were always careful not to mix these two issues: physical disability with spiritual impurity. Their approach is instructive to us today. As we work to build an inclusive community, we must make certain that we do not put up barriers to those with physical disabilities; at the same time we must never tire of purifying ourselves spiritually so that we can better serve God and each other.

Jewish Joke of the Week
The first Jewish man is elected President of the United States. On the day of his inauguration, his mother is sitting in the front row watching intently. The man next to her leans over and says, "you must be so very proud." "Oh yes," she replies. "You see that man up there being inaugurated? His brother's a doctor."

Social Action
Donate To The Food Pantry
Tifereth Israel delivers the non-perishable food items donated by our members on an ongoing basis to the Lutheran Social Services Food Pantry. Canned tuna, chunky soups, helper meals and baby foods are always needed, as are personal care products that cannot be purchased with Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program (SNAP), formerly food stamp, assistance. Please place these items in the designated box in the atrium. Please remember those in our community, both families and older adults.
Want to be more involved with bringing positive change to our community?
The Crime and Violence committee advises that through the efforts of Judge Gill a diversion coordinator has been hired to work with low risk juvenile offenders. Juveniles will be given the opportunity to participate in a Restorative Justice Circle that will not only divert them from the traditional criminal justice system, but will hold them be accountable in a life-changing way .
Volunteers are crucially needed for three initial Circles on the South side, the North Linden area, and the West side. If interested in learning more, please contact 614-525-3130 or email RJ_Circles@fccourts.org. or Amy Byler at the BREAD office at 220-9363.
