Join the Celebration and Support Jewish Learning!
Janet Yaillen wears many hats! She has been a hospice volunteer at Wexner Heritage House; participates in the "Friendly Visitor" program of Jewish Family Services; and has held leadership positions with the Friends of Shalom House. Janet has sung with the Tifereth Israel Choir; serves on the synagogue's B.R.E.A.D. committee; and is one of the founders of the synagogue's Sunday afternoon minyan. She also bakes gallons of love into the many plates of goodies that many in our congregation has received at simchas or times of travail. Janet's most passionate cause has been the Torah Fund Campaign of the Jewish Theological Seminary. [No, the Fund doesn't repair or purchase Torahs! It supports students, educational programs, and projects of the Jewish Theological Seminary.] Serving as our Sisterhood Torah Fund chair for 22 years, Janet has brought honor and substantial local fundraising success to this important activity. Join us on Sunday, November 4, from 2-4 pm in the Tifereth Israel Social Hall, as we celebrate Janet's contributions to our community. There'll be refreshments, music, expressions of gratitude and fun! The event, sponsored by the Tifereth Israel Sisterhood, is priced at $30 - including an $18 tax-deductible gift to the Torah Fund. Contact Joan Marks, (235-9652), for further information. Tickets will be available at the door!

ACH Debit Has Arrived! In order to assist our congregants in paying their synagogue obligations, we now have the ability to automatically withdraw money from your checking account each month or less frequently if desired. This is in addition to accepting credit cards, which, as you may know, cost the synagogue approximately 2.3%. We can withdraw any amount you decide on a monthly basis, which will be around the 15th of the month. If you are interested in more information on this brand new service we offer, please contact Cheryl Laver, our Finance Manager, at the synagogue or by email at claver@tiferethisrael.org.

D'var Torah
Our Torah portion, Vayera, begins with the story of Abraham meeting three visitors at his tent. The verses go out of their way to give some details that we would not normally expect in the narrative. We are told that Abraham was standing in the opening of his tent in the heat of the day. The sages asked what the significance of this detail could be. One answer is that it showed Abraham's eagerness to extend hospitality. It was not enough for him to sit inside and wait for someone to knock; he actively waited for passers-by who might benefit from his generosity.
Abraham's behavior issues us a challenge. Many times in our lives we find ourselves "hiding in our tents," hoping to avoid having to extend ourselves to others. We hope that someone else will take care of a problem or assist others in their time of need. It is less likely that we will put ourselves out--advertise--that we are available to help. That is, however, exactly what Abraham did, and it is a trait that we are taught to emulate. As Jews, we are not to hide in the background; on the contrary, it is our duty to step forward and do what needs to be done--whether for loved ones, or for "strangers" who may be coming down the road. These verses ask us to consider: are we in the tent, or are we at the door looking for our opportunities to step forward?

Jewish Joke of the Week
Moshe was eating in Solly's restaurant one day when he saw an elderly couple at another table. They had ordered one plate of salt beef and chips, one drink, and one extra glass. As he watched, the old man carefully divided the salt beef into two portions, then counted the chips and divided them equally as well. Then he poured half the drink into the extra glass and put it in front of his wife. The old man then began to eat and his wife just sat there watching, her hands folded in her lap. Moshe had to ask them whether they would accept him buying them an extra meal so that they didn't have to split there. The old man said, "Oh, no, that's very kind. We've been married fifty years now, and everything has always been and will always be shared fifty-fifty." Moshe then asks the old lady why she wasn't eating. She replied, "it's his turn with the teeth."

General
Take the Food Stamp Challenge
Hunger in America has reached historic levels with no relief in sight and is felt increasingly in the Jewish community-including our very own. The Food Stamp Challenge is a personal opportunity for you to experience the challenges of a food-stamp recipient for one week, living on the food budget of the average food stamp recipient - just $31.50 for the week, a scant $1.50 per meal. Join us on Monday, November 12 for a dinner at the synagogue produced within this cost structure. Minyan at 5:30 pm followed by dinner at 6 pm. Obviously, a meal for $1.50 per person is a very simple meal - and won't take long to consume. You may wish to contribute more than the $1.50 toward local hunger relief efforts. Please RSVP to Kristen (kgillman@tiferethisrael.org ; 253-8523, ext. 105) by November 7.
