Local leaders in McKenzie and Bowman counties met this week to complete their Vision West ND strategic planning sessions.
In their steering committee meetings on May 20-21, McKenzie County residents gathered and identified the economic development strategies and quality of life initiatives they would like to see addressed on a long-term basis. After the steering committee completed its planning session, eight strategies were selected for action: Business recruitment, business retention/expansion, downtown development, education development, environmental restoration, health care, infrastructure development, and local and regional tourism.
Several quality of life initiatives were also selected by the McKenzie County steering committee as well. These include traffic, day care, trash clean-up, mental health, school funding, services to children and families, parks and green spaces, recreation facilities, and affordable housing.
Each strategy and initiative has a lead person who is in charge of organizing the effort to address their issue.

Bowman County's steering committee also met for its planning session this week. Leaders from across the county met in Bowman May 22-23 and selected their own slate of economic strategies and quality of life initiatives. Strategies selected include attracting government funding, the "bedroom community" strategy, business retention/expansion, downtown development, energy development, entrepreneurial development, health care, infrastructure development, local and regional tourism, pass through visitor services, and value-added agriculture.
Quality of life initiatives selected by the steering committee include a volunteering initiative, housing, community foundation, leadership sustainability, and the expansion of the area's recreation center.
