Outreach

Chronic Illness Recovery will be exhibiting at the American College of Physicians (ACP) Internal Medicine Meeting May 5 to May 7 in Washington, DC. 6,500 internal medicine specialists and subspecialists are expected to attend and many will visit the exhibit hall to learn, explore and network.
You can read about our other outreach efforts on this website page.

Therapy Tip

Are you confused about low vitamin D as measured by the pro-hormone 25(OH)D? Measure the active vitamin D metabolite 1,25(OH)2D also. If it's in the normal range the patient is not vitamin D deficient. In fact, numbers well within the normal range may actually be an elevation because calcitriol ranges have been skewed high by the presence of patients with undiagnosed dysregulated vitamin D metabolism.

April 2016

Greetings!

A look at the history of how technology has changed medicine reveals some interesting stories:
Dr. Denton Cooley performed the first full artificial heart implant in a human 45 years ago this month. Did you know that surgery sparked a feud that lasted more than 40 years before the parties reconciled their differences?
This month, a paper in Nature reported on a project where a paralyzed man with a brain chip was able to pick up a glass and even play the video game in the lab.
And medical research is beginning to explore the potential benefits of collecting public health data through crowd sourcing.
The University of Michigan is actually asking the public for ideas as to what medical researchers should study next.
Technology and medicine seem destined to continue changing our world!

Warm Regards,

About Inflammation Therapy

Effect of Pollution, Tall Buildings, Shade and Clouds on Vitamin D Photosynthesis

Vitamin D proponents reiterate many reasons why they believe the general population is unable to obtain enough vitamin D without the aid of supplementation. These beliefs are often based on outdated or limited studies and can be challenged with more recent research.
Although pollution can block some ultraviolet radiation, even in urban areas of high pollution 50% of UV rays reach the ground. [1] One study concluded that reductions in atmospheric ozone, due to pollution, are expected to result in higher amounts of UV-B radiation reaching the earth's surface. [1] A significant amount of UV radiation exposure can be obtained in dense metropolitan areas; tall buildings provide shade but shade gives up to 50% of UV rays. Indoor workers receive 10% to 20% of outdoor workers' yearly UV exposure; [2] and for many this may be adequate, especially if sunlight exposure is higher when they are not working.
UV radiation is reflected or scattered to varying extents by different surfaces. For example, fresh snow can reflect as much as 80% of UV radiation, sand about 25% and UV radiation is still 40% as intense at half a meter under water. [2] The scattering and absorption of light (visible and invisible rays) by clouds does not provide enough protection from the effects of natural light exposure. It is believed that all wave lengths of natural light (infra-red to ultraviolet) can provide enough solar electromagnetic energy to cause the creation of vitamin D within the skin cells and light to be transmitted to the brain (amygdala) via the eyes.
Overcast skies should not be regarded with less caution than a sunny day. UV radiation levels are highest under cloudless skies but even with cloud cover, UV levels can be high. The scattering and absorption of light by clouds may not significantly reduce natural light exposure because over 90% of UV rays may penetrate clouds. Scattering can have the same effect as the reflectance by different surfaces and thus increase total UV radiation levels. [2]
Environmental factors are rarely an impediment to photosynthesis of adequate vitamin D.

About the CIR patient counseling program

To enroll in the Chronic Illness Recovery counseling program, a patient sends us an email and asks for an Enrollment Form. We then send their physician a letter of explanation about the CIR counseling program and the two professional forms to sign - Authorization to Counsel and Standing Orders for Inflammation Therapy Medications. When we've received all the necessary documents, any applicable fee and reviewed the enrollment form, the patient is notified of acceptance and registered at the Website/Forum where they post progress reports and ask questions.

Recovery Reports

We are contacted daily by people with chronic illnesses who are looking for an effective treatment. Many ask us to provide evidence of efficacy in the form of statistics or stories. If you have recovered your health or had significant symptom improvement with Inflammation Therapy, please help us 'pay it forward' by telling your story. We will post it in the public section of our website to encourage others. Any report, short or long, with or without objective data (e.g., lab results, imaging reports) would be helpful. Please email your story here. Thank you!
Please see Recovery Reports here

Diet Support

Sign up to receive emails with information related to diets, exercise and weight management. The regular contact provides motivation to get started and incentive to persist if/when the going gets rough. If you would like to join, please send us an email.

Quotes

"I know that most men - not only those considered clever, but even those who are very clever and capable of understanding most difficult scientific, mathematical, or philosophic, problems - can seldom discern even the simplest and most obvious truth if it be such as obliges them to admit the falsity of conclusions they have formed, perhaps with much difficulty - conclusions of which they are proud, which they have taught to others, and on which they have built their lives." Tolstoy

"Never doubt that a small group of thoughtful committed citizens can change the world; indeed, it's the only thing that ever has." M. Mead
