Sickness symptoms in response to endotoxin are thought to be related to the inflammatory response, which is more pronounced in females. Until recently there was no direct comparison of the sexes in regard to sickness symptoms. Scientists from Germany recently addressed this issue and confirmed both cytokine and neuroendocrine increases in females but without an accompanying increase in sickness symptoms. These results suggest that females have compensatory mechanisms to prevent elevated sickness in response to endotoxin.
