Work at BioDtech, Inc. has indicated that the species and preparation of endotoxin stocks are crucial. A recent PLoS-ONE report from scientists at Stanford University has reaffirmed this observation using a novel single-cell reporter system. Using NF-kB as an indicator of endotoxin induction of TLR4, they found differences up to 9 orders-of-magnitude using different commercial preparations from Sigma-Aldrich and Invivogen:
